Important news from bt.etree.org!

Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.

Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.

This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.

For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.

Thanks, and happy downloading.

Book Of Rules

Lyrics: H Johnson, B Llewellyn
Music: H Johnson, B Llewellyn

Played by Bob Weir with Bobby & The Midnites and in a few later appearances with Kingfish.

Isn't it strange how princesses and kings
Can clown their capers in sawdust rings, just like
Poor people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
Shapeless lives and a book of rules

Each must make his life as flowing ink
Tumbling back on a stepping stone, just like
Poor people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
Shapeless lives and a book of rules

Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow

And I say small people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
Shapeless lives and a book of rules (note 1)

Look where the rain is fallen from the sky
I know the sun will be only missing for awhile
And I say small people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
Shapeless lives and a book of rules

Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow

And I say small people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
Shapeless lives and a book of rules (note 1)

Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow
Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow
Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow
Pow wa pow pow, pow wa pa pa pow pow
Wa pa pa pow pow, wa pow pa pow pow pow

Notes
(1) Bob Weir sings "Shapeless lives ..." throughout. But the lyrics with the album include "Shapeless masks ..." here, with the rather strange footnote "informed sources differ on the original lyrics of this song." The original seems in fact to have been "mass" - see below.

30 Oct 2006 Smith Opera House, Geneva, NY

Origins
The original recording by the Jamaican band 'The Heptones' is readily available on CD.

Bob Weir gave the following account of how he came to record this song in a 1981 interview with David Gans, reprinted in "Conversations With The Dead":

"That has been one of my favorite reggae cuts for the last few years. It was sort of a hit in England. I finally found the record and copped the tune, and recorded it, and then a few weeks ago--after the record had been pressed up and everyhting was happening--a friend of Barlow's found a compilation of verse, a collection of poems from the turn of the century to about 1930. There was in it a poem called "A Bag Of Tools" by R. L. Sharpe. The words to that went

Isn't it strange how princesses and kings
And clowns that caper in sawdust rings
And common people like you and me
Will be builders for eternity
Each is given a bag of tools
A shapeless mass and a book of rules

"The second verse is

Each must make, ere life has flown
A stumbling block or a stepping stone

"So I'm going to sing it like that from now on. That's an example of what happens when you send a lyric through the Caribbean and back: you get some transfiguration, shall we say. It came back this way a little different. I had no idea there was the original poem. I knew there was something I liked about that song beyond the lyrics that were there, though the lyrics I got off the record were kinda neat in their own right. But someone was singing a song, and these guys heard it and got the lyrics as best they could, and then I got the lyrics as best I could off the record. They wrote a third verse, that one about "Look where the rain is falling from the sky."

Thanks also to Beth Loring, who independently spotted the conncetion and alerted me. She found the poem in "Best Loved Poems of the American People" (selected by Hazel Felleman, Doubleday & Co., 1936). She lays it out:

A BAG OF TOOLS

Isn't it strange that princes and kings,
And clowns that caper in sawdust rings,
And common people
Like you and me
Are builders for eternity?

Each is given a bag of tools,
A shapless mass,
A book of rules;
And each must make -
Ere life is flown -
A stumbling block
Or a stepping stone.

This show was nuts! I haven't seen Bobby in a while and heard he was tearing it up since the spring tour. Great seatlist and a very funky show. Well worth the 3 hour drive from the ADK.

My first time at The Stanley and I will never forget the balcony that bounced at least a foot up and down from heads dancing...almost scary at times. When Bobby kept builidng up at the end of One More Saturday Night I thought thought for sure the balcony was gonna collapse just as the peak of the song was happening. Great Show!!

this recording is very clean, and seems in the cswwet spot for this venue. Very nice seperation of bass and drums and the acoustic guitar comes out super clear; you can feel the strings on the set two start stuff. really well done. I am impressed.

I'm confused by how you can review this recording since I haven't finished uploading it yet. Only two people have actually heard it; myself (the recordist) and my girlfriend.

You are definitely neither. :>

Seriously though, this is a strong recording and I'm sure you'll be pleased once you get the opportunity to ACTUALLY hear it.

The mix leans toward the left but that's expected considering where I was set up. The output is almost 3 dB hotter in the left channel and i chose to leave it alone b/c it's an accurate representation of where I was that night. The RMS average (overall loudness of the show) of both channels was fairly close in output, so that was another reason to not mess with the levels in post.
