Not the most amazing recording (due mostly to the auto level set on the deck), but it is a MASTER! No eq has been used, though I think it could benefit from a little. A re-master may be in order after the raw version is out there...
I'm told by Fierce (the taper) that the only other rig at this show (the one that commonly circulates) was a Sony stereo mic (not mini) & probably a Marantz PMD 430 cassette. I think that source sounds a little better than this one, though it definitely has a couple generations on it. Maybe this master source could be used to fill the gaps in the other version?
This was my first Phish show & it cost $6 to get in. HUGE thanks to Fierce for taping & keeping the archives in good order so that these masters can be shared!

Important news from bt.etree.org!
Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.
If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.
Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.
This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.
For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.
Thanks, and happy downloading. |

| This master source is not as good as the other one (lack of dynamics, a little ugly in the upper mids), but it does contain the missing bits in the encore where the old source was missing some. This master is missing Buried & most of Coil however. So to make a complete show both sources are needed, which is the primary function of this seed. |

You're quite welcome. It was a fun show, & had me humming the Tweezer riff in my head for a week. I had never heard it before - in fact I had only heard Susie Greenberg & maybe Foam prior to walking into this show.
I have always wondered if SBD tapes exist from this show. I know Mabel's had a tape deck because I have a 2 board tapes of MY band playing there within a year before this Phish show. Anyone? |

| I forgot to mention that I believe the previously circulating version of this show runs about 70 cents to slow. |

The first SBD from October of that year that is in circ is 10-4-91 Madison....
I've been looking for these "purported" SBD's for almost 9 years now, and I think I am finally getting close to having everything that is "in the wild" digitized and seeded up......I'm sure there's a few more, but I've got to be getting close to have found nearly all of them.....
That being said....ya never know what will turn up from someone's closet..... |

Thanks A-train, you do good work!
It figures that there are SBDs from the next night. Oh well - enjoy this! |

Crazy shit!!
My 33 year old brother wrote for the Daily Illini and was sent to cover this show and interview Phish afterwords.
He interviewed them and hung out with them for a bit and then he never saw a Phish show again until first night of Columbus 2000 with our other brother and I. I never thought I would find a copy of this. Thanks, I am sure he would like to have it. |

I'm glad you guys are enjoying my tapes of this show. I had no idea that night was to be so historical at the time. I could have used much better equipment, but it was just another band in some bar. I had heard Suzie Greenberg once, and thought is was a gerat tune. Hell, I wasn't even 21 yet, so who knows how I even got into this show. I do remember for certain that there was no deck patched out of the board. There was only one other guy who taped it besides me. There were not many people at this show, and it only cost $6 to get in. The other tapers name was either Nathan or Ethan and he was a student at U of I just like me and Taperjoe.
Dave Parks, a photographer friend of ours, took sick b&w photos of this show. I have a couple 8X10 glossys. Dave, where the hell are you and where are the rest of those photos???
I'm pretty sure I left Mike Salzinski in charge of my deck and thats why there are some songs missing from the master tape. Thanks for remembering to flip the tape for me, Mike.
Doug Berkman, master of taping the Dead, just sat at a table tapping his foot, and noted that the Bass Player was pretty good.
Another friend of mine, who we called Mark Beard, worked at the local copy shop where Mabels printed the tickets for this show. When the Mabels order came in that day, Mark copied at least 100 extra tickets and walked out of work with them. He brought them to my dorm room the afternoon of the show, and we proceeded to call everyone we knew offering them free tickets to this great new band that was in town. Unbelievably, hardly anybody wanted to go with us. Everyone had to study, or go to a frat party, or stand out on the street waiting to get into a "hip dance bar" down the street. I think this show was on a Thursday. So many of my friends missed out on this show for absolutely free because they didn't trust Fierce.
Jack O'Brien, though you may never see this, I am talking to you!!!! I bet you don't even remember what you did that night...LOL
And finally to Giantdanks, forgive me if memory serves me incorrectly, but your brothers article about Phish in the Daily Illini ripped them, and he should not have been allowed to go to another Phish show at all. If I remember correctly the headline read something like "Grab a mug and go see Phish," then he went on to talk about how you would have to be a total drunk to actually like the band. Me and all of my cohorts were pissed about the review he gave that show. I'm glad he came around in the end...

Thanks for the new source and sharing your story Fierce. I started at U of I in Fall '92 so I just missed out on this. If the show was on a Thurs. night then that makes sense cuz that's the night that Cochrane's would be going off with cheesy dance music (and the long line you mentioned).
I have another show from Mabels in my collection a couple weeks after this one that had Widespread Panic opening for Blues Traveler. What a sick month that must've been! If you're interested in a copy, let me know. |

JoeFierce- I don't know if I ever read the article he wrote but we still have the Q and A sheet he used. I remember him asking them where the name came from and they said it was from the sound an airplane makes.
Also, he might have ripped them. I mean, I don't know if I would have liked Phish in 91 at a random show when I had never even heard them before. Also, he was listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and other underground punk shit at the time. He never really came around. He just went to that show with me and my bro in 2000 cause it was near where he was living. He never saw them again after that either. But he thought that 7/14/00 was an awesome show and said we should catch a Phish show or two every year. Then the Phish when on hiatus and he got his girlfriend pregnant in 2001. |
