| This "To Lay Me Down" is LUSH. So lush for 1970. It needs to be heard to be believed. I wonder why they didn't do that arrangement more often. |

this remaster is the best i've ever heard of 9-20. i listened to my nasty old tdk cassette the morning of 9-20-90 hoping the magic would span the years and leak into the garden (something happened!).
point is, if all i had was that hissy old cassette, i'd still rate this show in the top 25 all stars for the full, 'american beauty' style "acoustic" set. it's not the spare 'workingman's' a la 2-13, 2-14 and 5-2-70, but a more plugged-in variation on the theme. (plus, jerry on piano for tlmd?)
it makes me wonder whether or not the boyz, the nrps gang and grisman were indeed recording 'beauty' that very week.
sure wish i could find this quality (or better) for 7-12 and 8-19-70. HINT, HINT . . . |

It seems like I remember reading something from a person who was at this show who said that Pigpen was playing piano.
This is my all time favorite acoustic set too. I wish we had more of these from later in the year. It's interesting to hear how the acoustic sets progressed from 12/69 to the later part of 1970. It's too bad that such a crucial and rich period form the band is missing so much material from the vault. I love this show!!! |
