Thurs I saw:

MMW w/ Logic - average MMW show, really loose. Seen MMW 40+ times and the MMW/Logic things many times before (8-10x). Seemed like the MMW guys were travel weary and the crowd in there was *blech*. Sorry, wasn't feelin' this set and even after a listen still think this was an average MMW show - which is a letdown considering it was NOLA jazzfest and I skipped seeing Porter/Vidacovich/Skerik to see this.

James Brown Tribute with Fred Wesley - Maple Leaf late night- good, but crowded. Tim Green was solid. They need to bust out the hard core tough composed JB tunes not the same ol' same ol' James (Sex MAchine, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, etc)...Fred needs to consider hanging it up - he just does not appear happy playing this shit.

Friday:

GAB at 1 I Jax - Tremendous explosion of sound. Creative improvisation with young musicians who trully innovate everytime they're on stage. They make a ton of sound come out of their instruments. They lock in and listen to each other. Very raw experience. Great to see Stanton do things other than the typical Galactic set. Best show of the fest for me.

Pape Grows Funk - Howlin Wolf - Late night. Excellent excellent surprise for me. Tied for 2nd as best show of the fest. Dance party at 3:30 in the a.m. and they kicked down the scorching Ain't No Use for 20+ minutes. NOLA mofos!

Saturday -

Idris Muhammad, Donald Harrison, Will Bernard, and Will Blades (with Big Sam sitting in) - cool show, great to finally see Idris legend play, but the show didn't do it for me.

GBA - Tips Up - SICKness. Great vibe inside, unreal dance party with GBA stretchin out some great tunes including Nautilus and Deck Shoes. Ivan Neville on dirty keys for Ain't It Funky Now...great. This show dipped to 2nd place tied with PGF b/c I think Eric Kalb can't hold the GBA pocket like Zak. It's different drumming that I just don't think fits right in with the GBA pocket. I'm a pretty critical listener and that night I thought Kalb was so off he was on a different stage. The rest of the band though peformed perfectly...left the venue at 6:20 am and was on my flight home at 7:20 a.m. BTW, the 2nd set of GBA was recorded by Steve from Minny, MN who arrived post Mule- don't know if he seeds here.

Any chance of reviving the 2006-07-01 GAT show? (http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=26926). I'm at 79%. Thanks.
