Descriptionfor those who might have missed this on dime :

as promised the other day, here's more fresh transfers of a couple of well known shows.this time we have two concerts by old and in the way.the first is the famous sonoma state show from november of 1973.this is a very well known and documented recording but now from a fresh transfer from the sb master reels.the other is from a live broadcast from ksan-fm studios from march of 1973 as taken from an off the air reel master.

taped by ed perlstein.my brother jeff was also involved in the making of the sonoma show.here's a little bit about it :

jeff t :
It was made on my deck. I lived in Cotati at the time and Ed did not bring a deck to the show. A while before the show he asked for permission to tape and they said OK, so I rushed back to my place and got my deck and some tape. It would never have happened otherwise. We asked Ramblin' Jack Elliott if we could tape his set and he very adamantly said no. I don't remember why the OAITW set is missing the first few seconds of the first song.

ed p :
Yes, that's all true. The rest of the story is that the O&ITW sound guy was the teacher from one of my recording engineering classes. That's how this started. We walked into the auditorium and he was doing the sound so we had an "in". He said we could plug in if we got permission from the band. I remember going into the band room and asking Grisman. He said yes.
The first part of the tape starts late because we didn't have much time after we got the deck, set it up and got plugged in. It's possible, but I'm not sure, that the sound guy didn't turn up my feed until after the first song had started...I'm sure he was busy.

all info is in the file.
enjoy,
dave

always more to come...

Woohoo! Thank you

The Jerry Site says Richard Greene was playing fiddle that day (2 March) on KSAN, but I hear no fiddle on this recording. Anybody know for sure if he was there or is this just Garcia, Grisman, Rowan, and Kahn? Thanks for the help and the recording. Had the Sonoma State on tape way back when and always loved it. Great to have a good quality recording of it again
Rabork 2009-01-25 18:56:16
After more research, it does appear that the KSAN show was just a quartet with no fiddle player.

Also in 2010: Thanks a lot!
