| one more thing to help you get your bearings: the downloaded file set here is in flac and weighs 3.27gig (compressed) the resultant 24 bit wave files unpacked are over 6 gig. thanks to scott brown we have a program that works with flac files to write the iso that is written to dvd--so you'd never have to decode these files, but this is just to give you an idea of the difference of amount of data. more data, better representation, better sound. |

The real advantage is in editing and modifying the files. You don't have to record at as high a level, which means less chance of distortion. You can also use various filters and change the sound in the files with less error.
96 kHz is a bit of an overkill in my opinion, since most of the PA systems aren't sending out much information above about 18 kHz. Sometimes the unamplified cymbals, etc. can hit higher, and some of the whistles in the crowd. With 96kHz, you're capturing sounds up to 48 kHz - a lot of things that dogs can hear but humans can't.
But for the average person who is not going to alter the files after they download them, there's not really an advantage in 24-bit, 96kHz over 16-bit, 41 kHz. Try some blind sound tests, and it's a virtual guarantee that nobody you know can tell the difference.

agreed on 96 v 44/48. i do it out of force of habit. probably should just save the space and record at a lower sample rate. but...16 v 24? depends on playback system. on mine, it's night and day. subtle, but important. don't forget: it's shitty digital reproduction. it needs all the help it can get.

Hey David -
16-bit already has a lower noise level than most audio equipment, so I don't think you could tell the difference in a blind test, unless you have some sort of super setup. I agree with you that it's helpful for recording, though. And I like it because I usually work on the files after I download them to get rid of boominess, etc., so it's great for me too. Thanks very much.

dan: the difference i've heard is more about the 3 dimensional quality/"appearance" of the notes. also, a better re-creation of attack.. among other subtler diffs. i play these files through a crappy dvd player vs. a decent cal audio labs (for 16 bit files) > an adcom d>a and hear it... or better, *see* it -- that's where the difference lies for me; in presentation. |
