Grateful Dead
06/18/67
Monterey Pop Festival, Fairgrounds
Monterey, CA

SBD> MR> ? > DAT x 2> Sonic Solutions> cd
note: There seems to be no cassette generation between the MR and DAT, which is present on the previously circulated version of this show.
Remastered by “Mandrake”

1. Viola Lee Blues 14:07
2. "The Beatles aren't here"* 2:16
3. Cold Rain and Snow 3:27
4. Alligator> 8:08
5. Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks) 11:42

This was originally aired several years ago by Mandrake, on the “Morning Dew” radio show in New York City on WBAI, 99.5fm and contains the complete, uncut recording of the Grateful Dead’s set at the “Monterey Pop Festival” in 1967. My friend Barry Smith heard this source on the radio and absolutely had to have the stage banter between the first two songs but could not find a pre-fm copy of it anywhere. It simply did not circulate. The commonly circulating material, I was told was broadcast on WNEW in New York City for the festival’s 25th anniversary and contains two brief interview clips (one with Bob Weir). At Barry’s request Mandrake converted his DAT to cd and vined it out to the “Morning Dew” fans at their website... http://www.drnet.net/morningdew (You can listen to this radio show on the web via "real audio." It currently airs every Saturday from 9:30pm- 12:00am). I received a copy of this cd directly from Mandrake, EACed it to my hard drive with correct offsets and split the “Alligator> Caution” into two tracks with CD Wave.

Thank you Barry and of course thank you Mandrake for your unbelievable commitment to spreading the music over the years!
Evan Bellaff (theelevan@yahoo.com)- 9/03

As for the mystery surrounding when and where the “Alligator> Caution” is from, this is stll open to debate, as it is not believed to be from this show. Following is speculation on the issue contained in David Hollister's text file from his etree seed from April of 2000. It looks as these are the words of Jeff Tiedrich...

"Comments: (from Dead List Reader)
Alligator > Caution may not be from Monterey. What makes me suspicious is that at the conclusion of
Caution, Bill Graham is heard to say something like "let's hear it for the Grateful Dead." Bill Graham
was not the emcee at the Monetery Pop Festival, so it's doubtful he would introduce the BAND from the
stage. However, some folks have speculated that since Graham was in attendance and a friend of the Dead,
he might have done the intro and or the outro as a "guest emcee." The Alligator is a curiosity; it's a
very primordial version without vocals. Some parts are missing. Pigpen plays harmonica over the "verse"
parts of the song. If indeed this date is accurate and Alligator was not yet fully fleshed-out as of
mid-June '67, the certainly the true date of "5/5/67" falls somewhere later in the year."

* Following is a transcript of what was said on stage by a nervous Tommy Smothers immediately following “Viola Lee Blues,” as rumors of the Beatles showing up at the festival had spread and unruly fans were trying to force their way into the show. The speech is followed by “Cold Rain and Snow,” and is the correct order in which these two songs were played (as opposed to HOllister's version of this show which lists "Cold Rain and Snow," first).

TS: People, this is me again. I hate to cut things down like this, but, uh…, there’s a crowd of kids to whom I’m talking; mostly to whom- Are you ready for that(warning them)? Um, there’s kids, like crowding around the walls, and like trying to break down doors and everything, thinking the Beatles are here.
Phil: It’s the last concert. Why don’t you let them in?
TS: And uh… (chuckles at Phil’s suggestion) last con...; all right… (sarcastically).
TS: (to audience) Except that they’re trying to break things down, crawling over ceilings and walls and like…(sigh), thinking the Beatles are here and they’re not… You (accusingly to crowd)!; Those of you!
Several crowd members: Let ‘em in!
TS: They can come in if they want to come in.
Phil: The Beatles aren’t here (over Tom’s voice).
TS: The Beatles aren’t here.
Phil: …but come in anyway.
TS: Yeah (worried)… There’s great things happening anyway… (laughs nervously)
Phil: If the Beatles were here, they’d probably want you to come in.
TS: Yeah… (cautiously agreeing with Phil). Except… Except that (pauses and laughs nervously) … Just don’t, um… you know… don’t like bring down the ceilings and walls, and everything and uh… carry on.
Phil: (To crowd) Be Nice!!!

Important news from bt.etree.org!

Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.

Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.

This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.

For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.

Thanks, and happy downloading.

Cool show, the video of the Viola Lee from this show on Youtube is cool!
One thing, Pigpen does sing on the Alligator, he wasn't recorded properly (maybe his mic wasn't plugged into the tape deck?), if you listen very closely you can hear him growl away in the background during the quiet bits.
Thanks very much!

That's Peter Tork, not Tom Smothers, BTW.
