Blind Melon is back and are GREAT!! I was a little skeptical about the new singer, the name usage, all that stuff... BUT...Its all good.. The new singer Travis has a great sound, similar to Shannon, but not a copycat kinda way, Their new songs are real strong with that Melon flava to them with Cristopher and Rogers distinctive sound as well.. So they came into Chicago and had an EXCELLENT gig!! You knew it was gonna be good when Shannon Hoon's mom is out front hanging out celebrity style with everyone posing for pics. The then came on stage to praise the boys and espcially Travis.. Very cool...
Then the big suprise of the night, Nico (Shannons 12 yr old daughter) Hoon came out and sang for the 1st time on stage, she did "Change" and "No Rain". It was electric in that place, people were crying, it was a little surreal..The band was feeling it as well, you could tell. The evening was a complete celebration of Shannon and the music him and the band made..These guys sound great . Please support and check them out if you get theh chance. I see alot of live music and this show was a complete standout... Oh, and the recording sounds great too!!

Wow... there's nothing quite like hearing Shannon's only child sing Change... which was the first song he wrote. And she sang it with all the other original members of the band. Just... wow. I wasn't at this show (although I was at the NY show), which was probably a good thing. Hearing this brought a tear to my eye... wouldn't want my lovely date for the evening to see that. :-) She's got a good voice too for such a young girl, definitely following in her daddy's footsteps (hopefully she won't get into drugs like he did).
Quality is OK. Being that this is the only show from the tour that I can find, can't complain. Definitely listenable, and the same setlist as all of the other shows (although it looks like they may have played a few songs in different order... they definitely played Change later in this set than they did in NY).
Anyway, if you are a fan of Blind Melon, definitely check out this show.
Once again, thanks for the up. |

Thanks Mark!
This was a killer show all told. I've been to many gigs this year and this was the most passionate crowd among all. That says a ton for a Tuesday night at the Double Door.
Go see 'em folks! Shannon would want his songs and his band to live on, dontcha think?!

Awesome! Thanks so much, Mark.
Like most people, I had some serious doubts about this Blind Melon tour. Listening to this show cemented the fact that this entire tour is a tribute to Shannon and the great songs that he wrote, rather than a last-ditch cash grab for the surviving members. The new singer sounds pretty damn good, and the band is still dead-on.
I've yet to see them, but I'm now completely psyched to be catching the 12/5 show (in Ft. Lauderdale). They were simply one of the most underrated bands EVER.
RIP Shannon |
