PREVIOUS NOTES by Mike Wren:
* Thanks to Lee Farber for the original seed!
* There was some re-mastering done to clean up the original
tape hiss from this classic show. The processes I took are
as follows:
1) Amplified both discs 175% across the board.
2) Sampled a section of silence to obtain a decent noise floor
sample (25,000 sample points used).
3) Applied this sample against both discs at 64 percent.
4) Applied a graphic equalizer to boost the high and low spectrums
(specifically between 600 - 800 Hz and 8k & 10 kHz).
***Note: I cut everything above 11 kHz 18dB because nothing
existed above that freq. range on the original recording.
NEW NOTES by Hunter Seamons (12/31/06):
I noticed the pitch was too high in both shows listed in this seed. I decreased the pitch in 12.01.84 by 7%, and I decreased the pitch in 10.17.85 by 9%.
REMASTERED (12/01/07):
As this was my first seed, I naturally made some mistakes the first time around. I made all changes by going back to the original file set by Mike Wren and redoing the process, so this is as fresh as it gets. The new changes from my previous seed are as follows:
1) SBE fix
2) Encoded at 44.1 kHz (The last source I did was accidently encoded at a "false" 48 kHz. Whether this makes any difference sonically has not been determined.)
3) Different speed reductions at 6% and 8%, respectively. (I believe I was a hair off the first time around, so I wanted to use this opportunity to make the changes.)
4) NO CUTS! (I made some unorthodox, millisecond cuts before between songs, due to my inexperience of pitch correcting at the time. These went largely unnoticed, as far as I can tell.)
These changes should make this source better for the long haul.

Important news from bt.etree.org!
Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

It always kind of annoyed me that this gig is always labeled as a Nectars gig - when it was really upstairs at Nectars - which I'm pretty sure is called Club Metronome (not sure if it was in 1984 tho.)
Just rambling - thanks for the remastered source!

| Thanks for putting this up on schedule. It was cool to see it on this date as expected. Finally brings me full circle! Waiting outside the Greek theater in Berkeley in the pre-dawn of 6-16-85, some other taper gives me this cassette. I had been listening to the previous night's SWEET Lost Sailor (ironic, huh?) He said "Here check this out, these guys are gonna be the next Dead". I looked at the song list, got as far as the third tune, and handed it back to the guy. Politely I said, "thanks a lot, but that's ok, I already work with the best Dead cover band on the planet: Living Earth". (hee hee) Threw a tape of theirs (recorded in '84 with my trademark 3-mic onstage mix) into my d-5, passed the headphones over, and watched his jaw drop. Got into explaining that recording, and never did get to hear that Nectar's gig! So once again, thanks. Think I'll record this one on a cassette and haul out the d-5 so I can do this thing right! |

| ^^Another detail of the original text that MIGHT be wrong. There was an explanation of this before, but I forgot. The basic answer may be: It is a later source, but circulated before the 11.03.84 show - or perhaps the first seeded in '99 when etree started doin' its thing. |

11/3/84 is legitimate, but 12/1/84 was the first circulated show, even back in '85, as an above comment tells. Other pre-85 shows got uncovered only in the last few years.
[The legendary ROTC show is 12/2/83, from which Scarlet>Fire was broadcast during the 8/13/04 Coventry Archives Show.]
This is a super nice upgrade, especially to someone who first got a 10th gen copy edited down to 45 minutes way back in the day.
This may have gotten a surge of leechers because of people like me spreading the word about the goodies at bt.etree :) |

| taperwayne--Club Metronome didn't open as such until the early 90s, I think. In the 80s, I believe the venue was called Nectar's Upstairs or something... accounts vary. |
