Fix of shnid 2533

I've deleted the overlap in space between CDs 2 and 3, making the transition seamless. I also retracked the entire show, since many of the trackings were off, which led me to the gaps between tracks in most of set I (which I eliminated in Cool Edit 2000). Although it looks unclipped when viewed in CE2K, when you zoom in on the loudest parts you can see the truncated peaks and valleys indicative of clipping - if the source info is correct then it probably happened during taping, in the DAT deck's A/D conversion process, not in the transfer (though I don't know from DATs - I use a laptop myself). Overall, it's still pretty decent sounding. There are also three very good AUD sources on archive.org, so make sure to check those out as well.

Jim Mahoney's FOB recording (shnid 21648) supplies the first few seconds of Around & Around.

All files were converted to FLAC

Fix of shnid 35251

35251 was inadvertently FLAC encoded with replaygain. This source reflac's the above fix with no replaygain. The wav files are the same as in 35251, only the flac files have changed.

Known flaws:
-frequent clipping until last verse of I Know You Rider
-sudden dropoff in volume (~2 db) at end of "March wind gonna blow all my troubles away" (d2t03) - presumably the taper suddenly noticed the clipping and corrected the recording volume.

Important news from bt.etree.org!

Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.

Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.

This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.

For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.

Thanks, and happy downloading.

This is "fix" night at the Hornsby project.

=====

1991-06-22, Soldier's Field, Chicago IL

If all we had was the first set of the Chicago show on 91-06-22, we'd be talking about it still. The Shakedown Street, The Friend of the Devil, the Let It Grow -- the set started great, and it got better. But then the first set was followed by an absolutely stunning second set, long and really really well played. This is a show you want to own.

Unfortunately, we only have one source for it, the SBD 485. At some point someone cleaned up the tracking on 485 and seeded it -- it became 29057. A month or two ago, bheath seeded a cleanup of 29057, converting it to flac and fixing the wav problems. That seed is available here:

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=513508

I've got some bandwidth behind it: if you didn't already grab it, you really really should fix that right now ;)

1991-06-24 Sandstone Ampitheater, Bonner Springs KS
(this torrent)

I am a huge fan of Help > Slipknot > Franklin's. This show opens with a very strong one, filled with lots of interesting jamming, the band announcing that the groove they've been on for the past week is not done yet. The west of the first set lives up to this level -- each song is well played, and most have noteworthy jams. The second set has some great jamming, the chinacat > rider segue and estimated both being worthy of note. The second half of the second set looks short, but it's sweet.

There's a nice aud of this show available up on the LMA:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd91-06-24.fob-akg-mahoney-oneill.miller.28394.sbeok.shnf

We also have a sbd. Bill Tetzeli fixed up the tracking and the second set tape-flip. His original fix was mistakenly flac'ed with replaygain set. In this source he fixed that problem: it has the same wav files (and so the same ffp) but different flac metadata (and therefor a different md5).
the_hawaiian_barber 2008-03-16 23:15:31
The return of the Tetzeli's. The pollution never stops.
jerrygar1 2008-03-16 23:29:45
I'm not sure what the problem is 'cause i'm still gettin' the hang of all this in terms of specificity - well - w/ the md5 tech stuff anyway. I have that show that bheath put up in w/ the fixes & i have no problems w/ it that i know of. Am I missin' somethin'? - Is that why it was skipped here? - Anyway, thanx Steve for all this great stuff. It all will never cease to amaze me how far this community goes, w/ people like ureself for example, to keep the great energy of this music alive. People keep tellin' me so much 'bout Hendrix lately & after listenin' to these Hornsby shows coupled w/ that 71 new years posted the other day, The Grateful Dead just always stand alone (ok - Dylan too). Good evenin' & thanx 'gain.
mdarby 2008-03-16 23:52:39
the SBD DAT that I had years ago seemed as though the master had been overmodulated during recording

this was a great show during an awesome week that summer tour
but don't let the comments about the sound scare you off
it is still worth the download and the next night is even better
SteveSw 2008-03-16 23:59:31
JerryGar1, there's no problem with the BHeath torrent. I didn't skip it. It's running right now. I gave the link to it in my comment:

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=513508

I look to be one of seven or eight people seeding it right now. There's no reason to create a new torrent when there's already one running, is all.

Hawaiian_Barber, my experiments show that when I skip the BTet sources, fewer people grab the music. The purpose of this here project is to get the music to as many people as possible. Hence the Tetzeli's.
jerrygar1 2008-03-17 00:04:10
sorry Steve - i realized that after i already had sent the comment - thanx for the always great feedback & commentary on the shows
lyall70 2008-03-17 00:33:54
Steve,

Based on your original comments, would that mean that this is: http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=90843? And not 35251, right?

Thanks for the great seeding idea!!

Mike
NH_Winters 2008-03-17 00:58:53
Steve:

Thanks so much for this project and for your thoughtful running commentary. I really enjoy reading your show reviews and the context you provide. It's folks like you that make the Dead experience that much richer for me.

Well done.
fwagner.etree 2008-03-17 02:02:27
This and the next night are both incredible shows! It's a small venue like Deer Creek and the band just kicked ass! I was fortunate enough to be at both shows.
SteveSw 2008-03-17 02:12:10
You're right, lyall70: when I first submitted this I didn't know whether or not it would get a new SHNID.
the_hawaiian_barber 2008-03-17 09:51:16
One of the challenges that uploaders face is what to upload. I'm certain that more people do download these than the original source. I think that in the bittorrent age that a lot of people suffer from "hysterical download-itis". That is they see something that they don't have and the just grab it. It doesn't matter what it is. A lot of people do not make value judgements. Someone should.

Looking at the number of downloads isn't the solution, IMO. The question that needs to be asked is is it significant to create 2 new sources that are essentially the same as the original ust to trim a minute or so off of drums > space.
mdarby 2008-03-17 10:32:35
it seems that MORE than just the overlap between D>S was done to this show
actually in today's day and age we don't need such overlap
since alot of people don't burn to CD anymore
also the songs were tracked wrong... I'm glad that was fixed
many of us do not have this in FLAC since LMA does not allow D/Ling of SBDs
so I am grateful to have this source
SteveSw 2008-03-17 10:34:57
I was thinking about this overnight, Hawaiian Barber. There are two questions: the SHNID strategy question, and the question of what I should seed as part of my project.

The SHIND strategy question is the business of the people who monitor the Grateful Dead collection at eTree. Speaking practically, I think it's their business to make a call about these things, and it's my/our business to understand what they want to do, and to try to cooperate with them. There are a lot of more or less equally good ways they might proceed, and having us all argue about their relative merits just adds unnecessary heat to the community. For a while, the policy was to add new fingerprints to existing SHNIDs to illustrate that a "fix" was not really a new source. This is confusing in its own right: now the theory is that new fingerprints mean a new SHNID. Myself, I can understand either position: I look to the moderators to tell me what they want to do, and I try to do it.

The "what should I seed at eTree" question is a matter of ongoing thought and learning for me. That's because, ultimately, I think the right answer there is that I have to seed what I take to be the best available source. The issue of whether Bill should or should not have done his fixes is moot at this point: he did, the moderators accepted them, and now that's water under the bridge. When thinking about seeding, I ask myself whether the Bill fix is "better" than the other source. In this case the fix is a matter of retracking (in the first case) and then removing bad metadata from the flac files (in this second case). Neither of those has an impact on the music, and they are improvements (however mild), so I think this source is "the best" and that's why I seeded it. The question of what the SHNID of this should be does not enter into my consideration -- it would be wrong IMHO to not share an even slightly better source because of issues surrounding SHNIDs. The question of what the SHNID should be comes into consideration after I decide to seed, and it involves how to interact with the moderators.

There are other sorts of improvements that are less obvious and more a matter of taste, when it comes to thinking about what to seed. Patches can be done well or poorly. Repitching a 16-bit source and distributing it as 16-bit involves loss of data that even I can hear. If I had to choose between AUDs and SBDs here, and could only seed one source, that would be problematic sometimes (it's fortunate we have the LMA). When faced with the choice between SBDs and MTXs, I have so far chosen to share both (doesn't come up much, as there are not many post-1990 MTXs).

So anyway, that's how I think of this. I may change my mind in the future: I'm still learning. But it's useful to try to get clear on the matter, and I appreciate the chance you've given me to do so, Mr Barber.

One question: are you actually Tiki Barber? Seems fitting.
foody 2008-03-17 15:22:49
steve,
this projuct is great! I was wondering where to get 91-6-20, the second pine knob show from summer of '91
thanks
bheath 2008-03-17 15:32:15
SteveSW your efforts are most appreciated.
this night was absolutely killer. munching caps and stems walking to get in line....then finding my comfy seat just as things started to swirl all around. The choice for PA music this night before the show was Axis Bold as Love...they knew I was buzzin it would seem...what a great long and jammed out H>S>F

as for gd91-06-22..I did that fix because it is such an overlooked show, and a great show as well. I have no clue as for the protocol for getting a new SHNID...I asked for help with that when I upped gd910-06-21 and got none, so that is why it is floating out there with no SHNID.
That Terrapin from Soldier may be one of the best EVER, certainly top 5 ever, and maybe the best of the 90's surpassing Deer Creek 93...then drumz and space into a sweet Dark Star Jam.....
Soldier Field and the two Sandstone shows are desert island stuff for me.

If anyone can help me ge a new SHNID for the Soldier Field fix.....please let me know and we can exchange emails thanks.
and Thanks again Steve!!

foody, 91-06-20 is available for sale from dead.net. You can buy a copy right here:

http://tinyurl.com/2wctcw

BHeath, your fix was rolled up as part of 29057. Look here:

http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=29057

You can find your new fingerprint as a "sbefix" fingerprint on that SHNID.
1zeppelin2 2008-03-17 20:41:46
Is it worth to have 2 copies when you have essentially the same source? I say yes. It's not about downloaditis but it's a matter of what is important to folks. The great power of the internet is we can choose to download the show or NOT. Not a bad deal these days.

SW,

Thanks for your hard work.

For others,

Try collecting LED ZEPPELIN :( Remember your prozzak pills first!!

Let's enjoy the excellent music and generosity of these great uploaders :)
