Important news from bt.etree.org!

Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.

Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.

This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.

For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.

Thanks, and happy downloading.

While there are few anthemic jam-songs on this setlist, this is still a show worthy of the Boston run; the individual songs are played well, the transitions and flows between songs are well-considered, and there's a lot of nice jamming with and between. What's best about this show is the vibe: it's not a show where IT happened, more one where you'd come home with a "Wow that was a great show" feeling.

In the first set, it's a nice energetic Shakedown opener, and the MAMU > Maggie's is lots of fun. The second-set opening Samson and then Iko is very bouncy and rockin'. The best jamming of the night comes during the interesting He's Gone > Nobody's > Spoonful before the Drums; and then Bobby serves up an excellent Sugar Mag to close the set.

To get a feeling for Bruce's situation during these fall shows, you might be interested in this material....

Of course you get all sorts of perspectives from reading the various things said about the band in all the books and interviews that have come out over the years. Welcome to the study of history. I tend to just take it all in as data, and have it be part of my listening context. It's all interesting....

And if you're the sort of person who is offended by four letter words, there are a few of them in here, quoted from the original.

=====

Garcia's playing on the first part of the Dead's September Northeast tour was much more erratic than it had been during the summer; an indication to those close to him that the methadone regimen didn't stick. Bruce Hornsby notes, "Truthfully, I didn't really notice Jerry having problems until the fall of '91. Or maybe I noticed it, but it didn't start pissing me off until the fall."

He continues, "I remember we played nine nights at Madison Square Garden and I thought except for a couple of really great nights, to me it was really a dogshit run. Garcia was in this place I couldn't understand. He was starting to get to that place a lot in the last two or three years when I'd watch them -- he'd put his head straight down and look at the floor the whole time; hunch over and not communicate with anyone. And that wasn't like him, at least as far as I was concerned. We'd always had a lot of eye contact and interpaly, really a lot of good feelings onstage. But it wasn't just that. He sort of wasn't listening and starting to run roughshod over people's solos -- certainly mine -- and I thought at times the music just seemed strangely lifeless. I asked Bobby about it and he explained it to me. I'd heard about it, but had never experienced it firsthand. There were nights when I wanted to push the eject button. What I would have done in my band is try to play in a different way that maybe would have jacked everybody up, tried to take a little more charge of the thing. But in this band I didn't feel it was my place. So I was caught. I felt, 'Damn, this music is not happening; the music is not going anywhere.'

"Then we got ot Boston Garden and I was pretty bummed. We played this first set and it wasn't happening again, so I just said, 'Oh fuck it!' and I started playing this stuff that was very unmusical. I was playing hard and pounding and basically driving it up their ass. And sure enough, the gig got jacked up. There was a lot of energy in the set and it was a pretty good ste. But I thought I was playing like crap. I was playing in a way I didn't want to play.

"At the end of the set I went into Garcia's tent and he says, 'Man, I love the way you're playing tonight!' And I said, 'Garcia, I'm playing bullshit tonight. I'm playing crap, but it's all I can do because there's nothin' happening here and I really resent your coming to this gig and not putting anything into it,' or words to that effect. And he said 'Well, man, you don't understand twenty-five years of burnout!'"

Thanks again to SteveSW for your continuing work on the Hornsby project. The music & commentary is excellent.

I find Hornsby's comments interesting. While Bruce may feel that his playing during this stretch is not his "finest", I find it to be more "jamming." Bruce says he was "driving it up their asses", but Jerry needed a kick in the ass every now & then after 25 years of burnout. I think that Bruce really inspired Jerry, and you can hear it in this show especially, IMO. I really like this show, a fun one.

I mean, think about the difference in perspectives for Bruce & Jerry. For Bruce, this was still a new gig with a legendary band playing to huge audiences that turned on every single note they played. For Jerry, it was just another _____ night. I think this Boston run is their last great one, with great shows and pretty good runs scattered here & there until the end.
