Important news from bt.etree.org!

Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.

If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.

Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.

This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.

For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.

Thanks, and happy downloading.

Strange... The FFP for this file matches that of the erroneous D1T08 in the "other" fileset...

Anyone else have issues with the first D1T08 they DLed???

Thanks,

Terry

Hey now,
Does anyone have 4/27/936 @ The Concert Hall, Toronto - Set 1
Set II is the only set that seems to be in existence.
Cheers!

thanks for posting this.
it is is just another reason why converting from shn to flac "can" be bad for the community. I guarantee that not everyone who downloads the fileset from a few days ago will see or realize the issue.

I've given up on arguing over the who shn>flac issue. but I just ask of people who seed these to please make sure all the files match the wav md5s before posting.

thanks for doing more than your part Terry and thanks caravan for spreading the tunes.
stalactite 2008-04-16 12:26:54
twatts, may i ask of you a huge favor?

i checked my shn copy of this show and i also have an error on d1t08

in the original discussion of this show, you mentioned that you have an error free shn track

is there any way you can post just the shn file for d1t08? (as i would also like to keep this in shn)

thank you so much (to EVERYONE) for all your time and effort!!!
jasonsobel 2008-04-16 18:39:42
Terry - weird stuff going on here.
I decoded the d1t08 from the other file set, and came up with the same error when checking against the wav md5 in the db.

So I downloaded your version of d1t08. As you note, it's got the same FFP as the "bad" version of d1t08 from the other torrent. Well I also decoded your d1t08 to .wav, and I get the same failure with the wav md5 on your file.

Can you check the SHNtool len of all the SHN files. My guess is that the audio is fine for everything (the FFP's match for both files, so the audio is the same for both).
but my GUESS is that there is some extra headers on that .wav file. extra header info is retained by SHN. So if you go SHN > WAV and then test it, it'll match the .wav md5 that was in the db. However, if you then encode the .wav file to FLAC (which you did), the extra header info gets stripped out, because it is not neccesary. But then when we all decode the FLAC back to .wav, it doesn't match the db.etree wav md5, because it has a different header (i.e. it now has a "standard" header).

But, I don't have the original SHN file set, so I can't verify this myself. It'd be great if you could check this.
twatts 2008-04-16 18:45:50
Jason, I'll look into it some more this evening - these additional bits of info help... I suspect that you are right, that there is some extraneous info in the header that effects the MD5 but does not effect the FFP, etc...

What's weird is that once I went from SHN>WAV from my SHN set, the WAV file was error free.

I'll double check it all again tonight for everybody, and put up my results... I may remove this one file from seed...

Thanks everybody!

Terry

Bah! I give up! Looking in my notes, for that particular show I made a "new WAV MD5 for D1", but I didn't say why. I notice that my new D1 WAV MD5 has a different hash for D1T08.

This could mean one of a few thing:

1) I don't have a copy of the original SHN set.
2) I have a copy and fixed whatever issue was present, but didn't note what I did.
3) The WAV MD5 listed on DB is incorrect.

A few thoughts:

If I don't have the original fileset, how likely is it that both Caravan and I have the same fileset??? I suppose we could ahve DLed it from here at the same time, but wouldn't that mean that seed is not original???

Caravan and I could have the original fileset, and it could have an incorrect WAV MD5 for whatever reason. I can't believe it went this long (2001) for anyone to notice. Though it is plausible - no one noticed the SBE on D2T01... I could have fixed whatever issue there was, which in this case may have just been creating a new WAV MD5.

As for the DB, I'm not sure how an incorrect MD5 could be listed without someone else catching it earlier. But then again...

Overall, I'm not sure what is going on. I'm going to run a SHN>WAV MD5 against the FLAC>WAV MD5 just to double check, then I'm going to fix the SBE... At that point, I'm not sure if I should seed my new fixed version... It seems my fixes don't really fix anything at all!

"Way to piss in the pool, Terry!!!"

After running my WAV MD5 on both the SHN>WAV and FLAC>WAV filesets, I have determined that BOTH are exactly the same fileset.

Could this mean that the DB is incorrect???

Or does it instead mean that both Caravan and I DLed filesets with errors???

Someone else with the SHN fileset should chime in...

Thanks,

Terry

twatts 2008-04-16 22:55:37
I double checked my SHN MD5s and indeed, the D1T08 SHN MD5 is in doubt in my SHN set:

0e68f58e653d22f2463a97d45a639496 *ph1993-04-23d1t08.shn

The mystery deepens... But I think I have a bad seed...

Terry
twatts 2008-04-16 23:06:33
Well... My incorrect fileset has been in my archive since Dec2004... So God knows where I got it from...

Do to the ongoing issues with this, I'm stopping my Seed...

Terry

twatts 2008-04-16 23:11:19
And to alleviate any concern, since the SHN>WAV and the FLAC>WAV were the exact same, this "fix" isn't quite a fix.

If you DL this file to fix the previous FLAC version seeded a couple of days ago, it doesn't matter. The resulting WAV file for D1T08 in either case will be EXACTLY THE SAME.

Terry
twatts 2008-04-16 23:19:16
I used SHNTOOLs to "Fix" the SBE on D2T01. I did the Fix by set (D1 and D2T01 only). Here are the resulting WAV and SHN MD5s for the fixed D2T01:

cac6f13daa4e7806bb423ec15d079e2e *ph1993-04-23d2t01.wav

Terry
twatts 2008-04-16 23:29:50
One last note then off to beer...

My SHN files are dated 10/2/2001 and 10/3/2001. Except for D1T08, which is dated 10/6/2001.

Terry

Terry -

Thanks for checking into all this. My guess is this:

the transfer was originally done, and the md5's and wav md5s added to the db. then a couple of days later, some issue with d1t08 was found, and fixed (your d1t08 file is dated 3 days later than the rest of the files, so that supports this theory as well). But, for whatever reason, the updated wav md5's never made it to the db.

and regarding a completely new seed, with "corrected" wav md5's, and the SBE fix, I would suggest not doing a re-seed unless you were also planning on removing the pre-emphasis.

This show, as with all shows recorded with the Teac DA-P20 has pre-emphasis and it was never removed. That's sort of like the 500 lb gorilla in the corner than no one has mentioned yet.
