"Strip Search"?

Wow...why so intrusive for these?
sweetmags 2008-05-02 20:46:41
thanks so much Joe

this was a truly great & legendary run,
apparently not properly saved for posterity thanks to the buffoon Steve Parish

so every release like this is oh so vital

thanks very much again

garcialives 2008-05-02 20:50:38
Parish is no Buffoon.

Hey Joe - Do you know Dan Cole? He was also at this run taping and ran into Graham on one of the nights. Think it was the night he patched into the monitors downstairs. I'd bet you are familiar with this event, if not there.

Thank you for the show and your tireless efforts recording that night. I know it was a very tough one.

Peace,

no taping policy due to the venue being on Broadway, NYC.
Thus a VERY large union fee to allow any audio or video recording.
And the venue was very tiny... so Bill Graham Presents did not want to pay a hefty union fee, just to allow the tapers...

AND THEN they released a COMMERCIAL release of the show, so they in fact were paying the union fee and the band recorded every show!

They had goons looking for tapers... I was physically lifted off my feet and thrown out the door at the 10/17 show... with Bill Graham lecturing me as I was tossed onto the sidewalk.

Then the following show, Bill Graham greeted me in the outside line to get in...smiled at me and asked me if I was in the "no taping section". I shook his hand and told him I would like to see the entire show that night :)

Then came the infamous taper patch to the speaker wire in the downstairs smoking lounge. I thought Bill G. was going to have a heart attack! That's an entire story in itself!

What a run... I did 8 of these shows. Tickets were impossible.

Thanks for this one - I have read all the comments and now I cannot wait to hear it!

I did have one problem with the download - I noticed GARCIA was misspelled in the torrent as GARICA.
I changed my file name to GARCIA before saving and now I should have the whole thing in about 70 minutes.

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for your efforts ~ I love hearing the stories behind the shows!

Peace,

Ryan

I was at one of the Broadway shows. Nice show, but definitelty a different vibe. The no taper thing would have been part of that, although I was never a taper. But the fact that the shows were indoors during the afternoon was a bit weird, as was the presence of Bill Graham, normally not part of the East Coast scene at the time. My best memory was being able to thank Bill personally for his generousity in letting me into the SF Civic Auditorium (now named the Bill Graham Auditorium) on 12/31/84 for my one New Year's Eve show. I begged and he bought my sob story...made for a great memory.

Thanks for sharing Joe. I love the acoustic stuff.

I will never forget these shows. They were my 1st time seeing Garcia play acoustic. Being a native New Yorker, I thought nothing of the vibe. The guards in the isles were a big hassle. I got tossed out of the 10-12 show for sparkin' a fatty. Many thanks for the up.
