Lineage: SBD > PCM > ? > D > Serafin Station
Apparently at some point in this show's lineage, it was encoded on cassette with Dolby B NR, but subsequent dubs did not decode the Dolby B...the editing software took care of putting the proper EQ curve back into the show
Any/all editing, fades, NR, hiss elimination, phase shifting/"time smear" correction, jitter elimination, and +/-2 dB max. EQ were performed using 100% digital-only processing (24-bit/96 kHz data stream) at Serafin Station Studio B
Seeded to Etree by Patrick Murphy (patrick_e_murphy@yahoo.com) February 2002
Thanks to Jay Serafin for the disks and the priviledge of seeding them!

Jay's Personal Comments:
This is a good show. Not the best I've ever worked with, but decent quality, good mix, etc.
There are a few SBD technical flaws that originated at the venue, mainly heard at the ending of "Space" and into the beginning of "Morning Dew". It sounds almost like diginoise trying to "start", but it's actually a PCM master recording fault when the show was initially put onto PCM at the venue. It's not overload distortion, as it's mainly on the right channel (90% of it), and since the master I received had equal volume on both channels during this time period mentioned, it was most likely due to a flaw in the video tape that was used to record the PCM audio on, or in the output of the mixer going to the PCM deck. Otherwise, it's a pretty good show.
This tape's lineage possibly included an analog cassette generation, as some of the songs were "cut" at the end of them, thus not leaving the between song lulls in the dub made. This irritates me, as it takes away from the show's overall enjoyment, and it's just audibly annoying. Luckily, with the professional editing and processing software I use, I can cross-fade the two songs so that's it's not a "jump" from one song to the next, but a gentler and more gradual transition. The only
exception to this was at the end of Morning Dew, where there was a tape flip, and the very last few seconds were cut off, and the first 10 seconds of One More Saturday Night were also missing. Again, a 5 second crossfade between the two songs is much easier on the ears and such than a "jump" from the one song to the other.
The show is slightly lacking on the Phil side, as he seems to be slightly more absent from the mix than usual. I could have brought him up more, but I limit the amount of EQ to a maximum of 2 dB, so the "Phil Zone" from about 625 Hz downward WAS brought up by 2 dB, thus leaving the music quality as natural as can be from this copy I received.
The Dead always did good shows in the Chicagoland area, and this one was no exception. The energy level is upbeat, the shows opening 3 songs are from their "not the usual opening songs" group (the show begins with "The Music Never Stopped -> Sugagee -> Music Reprise". Quite a nice diversion, and enjoyable as well.
Overall, not the best quality show as far as being "very natural sounding", but I attribute that to it's unknown lineage. But it's as good as it's going to get, and the sound is good. Not spetacular, but good. This is why it was given an AR-3 audio rating rather than an AR-2. Almost every trace of analog hiss has been digitally removed without affecting the music quality, both in the loud and soft passages. I personally enjoyed this show more for the out of the ordinary opening songs than the overall quality of the show audio itself. But, it's a clean copy (or it is NOW once I was finished working on it), and it may
be a choice for you to consider.
Patrick's Personal Comments:
This was the very first Dead bootleg I ever got - from a close friend at my bachelor party. Check out this show if only for the great beginning (the transition from Music to Sugaree is sooo smooooth), the best Althea ever, and the terrific Space->Wheel->Playing->Morning Dew climax.

Important news from bt.etree.org!
Begining on March 17 2006, all torrents seeded at bt.etree must
include 1) checksum files (.md5, .ffp) that include a checksum for
every lossless audio file in the fileset, and 2) a copy of those
checksums pasted into the torrent description, so everyone can see
them without downloading the fileset.
If you seed a torrent without this information, it will be deleted.
We're telling you this now, so you'll know.
Of course, if there is a problem, we'll try to contact you and help
to fix it. If you don't have a valid e-mail address on your
db.etree.org account, please take a moment to add one. If we can't
contact you, we can't help you, and it be very frustrating for
everyone. Seeders who don't have valid e-mail addresses may find
their logins disabled.
This message will appear on all torrents seeded to bt.etree until
everyone has gotten the message. If your torrent has checksum files
and lists them in the description, thank you! If not, please take a
moment to edit the torrent description to include them. If you have
to add the checksum files from scratch, you'll have to pull this
torrent and start over. Sorry about that.
For help generating checksums, please visit
http://wiki.etree.org or
http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=7025. If you have specific
questions, please post them at http://forums.etree.org and someone
will help you ASAP. Please do NOT e-mail us directly.
Thanks, and happy downloading. |

this show was in dire need of an upgrade
great versions of a lot of songs
plus that 3 punch opener! |

| Upgrade? This show was released as a Dicks Picks years ago. While not a great sounding release by any means, it's *way* better than this version.Buy it. |

| did they have pcm in eighty two? the dp release cited a master cass, or reel, I believe. i thought pcm was "invented" in 84. |

qhist, Sony introduced the first "professional" pulse code modulation adaptor in '84 but the technology goes back several years before that. The earliest audio recording use I know of for sure was in '78. I have heard, but am not sure that it is correct, that the first use in the Dead scene was by the Oades, and PCM was picked up by Healy shortly after.
That doesn't mean this PCM lineage is correct, but I think it could be.
Also note that multiple masters were often made. There could easily be both a cassette and a PCM master of this show.
That being said, I thought even the Pick of this show sounded flat and I didn't even keep it...and I think Jeff Norman is a certifiable genius...hm. Interesting to see this final line being crossed so thoroughly.

| Thanks for the upload. As others have stated earlier, this is a Dicks Picks. I thought that official releases were not to be duplicated. |
