Thanks, Charlie. ALL the shows you put out are greatly appreciated.

Yeap, the shows are appreciated, as long as they are not Vince Shows, you can keep those because they all suck.
mhoram 2008-06-13 19:53:55
Ever wonder why Vince was never in any of the reunion tours? Because he sucked that's why. His terrible playing and voice became quite obvious to the rest of the band. Thus they never invited him to anything. Open your ears everybody and stop riding his jock just because he was at one point a member of the band. He sucked plain and simple.

That's pretty harsh.

Thanks, CM, another gem, this mix is fantastic, stunning bass, great great quality. A+

Hey now, I won't defend Vince's playing or his singing, but I did see some incredible post-Brent shows. Luckily I saw Alpine '88 and '89 and New Years 89-90 and some other Brent shows to give me some comparison. Yeah at the time we heads were pretty disappointed when it became clear that Hornsby was not going to replace Brent (now that would have been insanely perfect).
Vegas in '92 stands out as a purely awesome cosmic run. Despite Vince's lackluster presence it was still a pure joy to be at a show and hear the boys play their music.
Anyway the point being is yes the band did go downhill and Vince certainly did not help matters at all.
Nobody would argue that he was remotely as talented as Brent or Keith or Pigpen.
The big question is why did the band put up with Vince for almost 5 years? They were grown-ups and business men by default, and more than anything the most successful touring band of all-time, so why did they tolerate such a mediocre member in their band? Don't bash Vince, it's the other 5 members who accepted him and for whatever reason and despite his lameness, kept him onboard the ship.

I used to think that Vince was subpar, but as I continue to listen to all the new late-era shows released, I can't help but be impressed with Vince's contribution. I'm not much of a Samba fan (despite Hunter's lyrics), but It's All Too Much, Lucy in the Sky, Here Comes Sunshine, and especially, Unbroken Chain would have been shambles had it not been for Vince. Also, I always liked his vocal contributions to songs like Ship of Fools, or So Many Roads. >Dr. Matt

Stating that Vince isn't your favorite of the Dead's Keyboardists is one thing..

But slinging ad hominem insults around about a man who isn't even with us anymore is quite another entirely. He's not even here to defend himself.

Knock it off, and develop some humanity.

Maybe Vince's sound didn't jive or blend with the band all the time, perhaps in hindsight (The Band's?), not the best fit, and certainly not the glory and spark that Brent so often showed. But please don't judge Vince's quality as a musician in general. He had a damn tough act to follow, and a hell of a depression to battle after Jer kicked it. And Jer loved him, like a bro - so give Jer a little goodness by being cooler to Vince. If you've read any of the band's thoughts on Vince after his death, you might be able to develop a bit of the HUMANITY that Brett speaks of so well. Jesus! And that said - a bit of the invective those folk deserve - did any of you make it into the ranks of the Grateful Dead? Humanity indeed!
