A second version of 11/19/1966 circulates. It's an FM broadcast; it has a different song order and it includes the Dancin' In The Streets. It is currently available at this link:

==========

Here are four shows (or rather, snippits from four shows) from 1967 that were mentioned favorably in Dead to the Core.

The May 5th show is noteworthy because of the version of The Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion. This is probably the best version in existance. It's played with great energy, wild and dancable, flowing nicely into the New Potato Caboose. Eric argues that it's quite clear from listening to the tape that the band was in an "enhanced" mode: certainly the banter before Golden Road is as amusing as it comes, and is well worth a listen.

There was a lot of great jamming on September 3. There are excellent versions here of Dancin', Schoolgirl, and Alligator. You could easily argue that the Viola Lee Blues and the Midnight Hour from this date are definitional, best-ever sorts of performances. Eric points out the Pigpen rap at the end of the Midnight hour where he fails to convince a girl to come up and dance with Bobby; I don't know how he noticed after all the jamming that had just come down.

The September 4th show is just a fragment with a bit of early Caution....

What's cool about listening to the March 11th show I torrented yesterday and then these three shows in succession is the very strong and fast progression from the jangly electro-mod sound from 1966 to the full-on psychdelic sound that characterizes 1968 and especially 1969. By the November 11th show, the band is really starting to sound like "themselves" in a lot of ways (the jamming, the relationship between the instruments, etc). This is also the earliest source I'll torrent that has Mickey on it; you can especially hear his impact by comparing this Caboose to the one from May. Eric reviews a tape in the book that has since been determined to be this Caboose and the Aligator > Caution from 11/10.

==========

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Thank You!! I love this "Dead To The Core" project...... some of the best music ever made. I absolutely love the early sound.

1. Thanks for the music.
2. That looks like a neat book.
3. Thanks for the link to the book. ::adds to b-day wishlist::

the rio nido show has been described to me several times as a seminal moment for the band in which the potential of psychedelic jamming was fully realized. for the viola lee, i don't believe in "best evers" when it comes to A-list songs like that, but this one is right up there, with a weird trembly acid energy that's more felt than heard. note that there is a version without the second, ending cut on the...ummm...never mind ;o)

look forward to hearing these other snippets....

>note that there is a version without the second, ending cut on the...ummm...never mind ;o)

It's a bonus cut on the remastered, reissued version of the Dead's first album. And what a version!

There is a great review of the Rio Nido show here: http://deadlistening.blogspot.com/search/label/1967 (a great site all-round).

I could sure use a seeder for this set, I just got around to getting the book as well and my '67 collection is sparse! Also thanks for putting these shows in handy clustered torrents like this, it makes it super easy to dump a couple gigs of related shows right on a flash drive and start making the rounds to my friends' hard drives...
rcw66 2009-08-31 21:29:53
Any kind seeders for a couple of hopeful hangers-on?? I too am so short on '67 and am loving this year.

Amazing how it's not that you get tired of listening to the GD, it's just that you need to move to another decade and it's all fresh again.

Thanks to all uppers and seeders, yes, these clusters are awesome.
