Dark Star 06:49 - 07:43 = unknown audience master > ? > C > C > D
Dark Star 07:43 - 10:46 = unknown SBD source > ? > C > C > D
Lovelight 30:13 - 30:46 = another unknown audience master > analog gen > C > C > D
The unknown audience master used to patch the Dark Star is excellent. The other audience master, used to patch the Lovelight, is B+ quality. The second SBD source, supplying the other 3 minutes of the Dark Star missing on the MSR> DAT, is only very mildly inferior to the MSR> DAT source.
The third guitarist audible starting about 2:30 into Dark Star and for several minutes thereafter is Peter Green. Duane Allman on slide guitar enters around the middle of Dark Star. Gregg Allman adds organ & vocals during Lovelight, and Barry Oakley plays a second bass on Lovelight.
This is an optimal copy of a classic hour of Grateful Dead.

The transition from the baroque psychadelic music of 1969 to the more roots-oriented music of 1970 happened gradually during the last half of 1969. Moving this direction, the Grateful Dead were both exploring their own bluegrass, folk, and jug-band roots and riding a wave shared by a broad range of bands and singer-songwriters across the country. You could think of this transition as starting for the Grateful Dead in the late summer of 1969; certainly by these early 1970 shows, the band had definately arrived in the new place and was playing quite differently than (say) the Fillmore West shows from Feb/March of 1969.
Eric calls out three of the Fillmore East shows from February of 1970. With all due respect to Branford Marsalis, Eric calls the Feb 11 show "the mother of all guest spots" on account of the participation of Duane and Gregg Allman and Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac. I've seeded two sources of that show here: one contains all of the music from that night that we have available, the other contains the most listenable version of the Dark Star > Spanish Jam > Lovelight set we have. While the pre-Dark Star music is not up to the jamming to follow, I always like to listen to these things in context, and I like both the NFA and the Cumberland Blues from earlier in the night.
Since the Feb 13 and Feb 14 shows were used to create both Bear's Choice and Dick's Picks #4, they'd be well known to us even if they weren't strong candiates for "best show ever". I can't seed the whole show on eTree, but I though you might appreciate the songs from these nights that aren't on those albums. Given these sources and those commercial CDs, you should be able to put together full-show versions of what came down those nights. It's funny, Feb 13 is usually thought of as the better of these shows based on the monster 90-minute Dark Star > Other One > Lovelight jam from the second set, but if you take both the early music on the 14th and the acoustic stuff into account, I think Feb 14 certainly has its strengths.
This should go without saying, but it didn't earlier, so let me say it directly: if you know of a place where you can get a copy of the entirety of these shows (or any other shows that aren't sharable at etree.org), please don't post a link to that place here. I know it's well-intentioned, but it's also kind of harsh on the people you link to. Kind of like posting a sign in front of the police station saying "I know there's no pot available around here, but you can get all you want from my buddy up on 329 Main St Appt D". Since this is a really public place, it's just good to be careful.

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Six shows in three incredible nights. There was a seventh show on 2/12 at Ungano's Nightclub of which two sources circulate.
The late show on 2/13 is considered the best of the bunch but all were excellent shows and were among the very first high quality SBDs to enter trading circles.
A bit of history -- the shows were taped on 15-inch reels by John Chester, who was the sound engineer for the Fillmore East. He was able to sneak a direct feed from the soundboard. The tapes, known as the "Chester Reels" were dubbed by Alan Maude, one of Chester's assistants, and passed on to none other than Bob Menke.
The "Chester reels" were used Dick Latvala to patch Bear's original 7-inch tapes that in turn became "Dick's Picks Volume 4.
The "Spanish Jam" on 2/11 is the first in nearly two years. With both Duane and Gregg sitting in as well as the great bluesman Peter Green, many consider the jam to be among the best guest appearances in GD history.
The 2/13 late show began after 1AM and concluded after sunrise. Nearly 15 minutes of applause followed the Lovelight before the band brought proceedings to a close with "AWBYGN".
The "Mason's Children" on 2/14 was the last of nine times that the full GD played the song. "Dark Hollow" and "Wake Up Little Susie" were both played for the first time.

You and your Ungano's Nightclub, OutOfIraq! You can seed that, I have a reputation to maintain around here. Next thing you'll be telling me is that there weren't really two shows each of these nights :)
I tell you what I'd love to hear, I'd love to hear those audience recordings of 70-02-11 that are used to patch the soundboard in these sources. "The unknown audience master used to patch the Dark Star is excellent." Whew, that would be fun to hear. But heartfelt thanks to John Chester, Alan Maude, Bob Menke, and whoever else was responsible for letting us hear this great music. |

It occurs to me that many of you might not recognize the joke behind Ungano's nightclub.
Bear has always insisted that there was only one show on 2/13. Deadbase believed him. Jay Serafin believed him too, and circulated the early show from 2/13 as "2/12 at Ungano's nightclub". That generated a lot of conversation. Check out, for instance, the comments on this source:
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=5932
Here is the deadlist info for 2/12, that tells us that there were actually two sources circulated erroneously labeled as this date, a bit of Peter Green, and then the aforementioned Ungano's nightclub set:
http://www.deadlists.com/default.asp
The thing that made me laugh was imagining the trouble it would stir up to have circulated the fake 2/12 show as part of this torrent. The thing is, since I circulated the early show from 2/13, you actually got that music for free, and properly labeled to boot ;) Though to be fair, a clear copy of 2/12 circulated late last year, so at least some of us have a sense of humor. |

The songs say OMIT because they're on official releases.
Isn't it that the 2/14 Alligator on the old bootlegs was preceeded by Weir singing (to the tune of Here We Go 'Round The Mulberry Bush)
"The faster we go the rounder we get
The faster we go the rounder we get
The faster we go the rounder we get
In the fourth demension"
?
That bit isn't on Dick's Picks and I can't find my old tape. That's a bit of stage banter that I've been looking for forever. |
