Anomolies & Fixes:
There were several major problems on the first side of the first cassette and a few sporadic problems with the rest of the recording. Many (10+) dropouts were fixed by patching the left channel onto the right, and vice versa. Who knows what's going on during Carolina, but things seem to smooth out by the time Sloth starts. A major chunk of Bathtub Gin was missing, and when it came back in the levels were severly oversaturated, I completely removed about 25 seconds for the sake of "listenability". Then end result is listenable, although you can hear multiple instances of Page during a confusing crossfade. YEM was also a pretty big mess, there were sections which were much much quieter than others, the "boy man god shit" & "tramps" sections are missing entirely. There's about 40 seconds of YEM that is pretty akward as the levels and stereo image jump around. The middle section of Caravan had super-hot levels which clipped, I brought down the overall level to make it level with the previous levels. Sections of Trey's banter after Caravan were cut, I patched those back together with crossfades. The levels on set II are much hotter than set I, so you may need to turn it down after Antelope. Bouncin' had a dropout and level change, again, I did my best to smooth it out, but it's still obvious. There were 2 more dropout/level bumps in Reba, fixed again with a L/R channel patch and crossfade. Before Tela the levels were dipped again, I bumped it up and rolled it off again when things got back to normal. There was another dropout in Weekapaug Groove, patched with a crossfade.

Mastering Info:
Once all fixes were made in the 24/48 realm, the following mastering proccesses were rendered: Waves REQ (top secret settings), Blue Tubes FA770, BBE Sonic Maximizer, Waves L2 & Waves X-Noise. The 192KHz Stereo Resampler was used for 48 > 44.1 and UV22HR was used for 24 > 16 bit dithering.

I'll be going away until Saturday, so if my seed drops off just stay on and I'll make sure everybody is happy!

Allow me to clear up a few things for the sake of accurate source details. John took a line-out from me this night. I recorded the show using Tascam PE-120 mics into a Sony WM-D6C with Maxell XL-IIs tapes. The left channel mic bettery began to fail right from the get go so I replaced it on-the-fly during Bathtub Gin. The rest of the show sounds great (considering the venue) and there is no level saturation on my masters. If someone wants to coach me in uploading shows, I have several master SBD and AUDs between 1989 and 1991 I'd love to share. I have excellent transfer equipment/software and I know how to use it, I'm just a little shakey on the whole getting a SHNID thing & all that stuff & what have you.
footbear 2008-07-09 22:16:37
SIDE NOTE: Both John & I had eaten some Pepperidge Farm Sausalito cookies that had been generously dropped with some fantastic liquid, which may explain away a few things ;-)
obaaron 2008-07-10 01:47:02
wow....I'm sure someone here would be more than happy to do 24/96 transfers of your early phish "classics"!

Someone take this guy up!!!!

Thanks for the up!
obaaron 2008-07-10 01:48:03
nevermind.....check out

wiki.etree.org on seeding instructions!
footbear 2008-07-10 07:47:05
Thanks obaaron I'll check that out :-)

"the whole getting a SHNID thing"

You don't have to worry about that basically. If you want to get a shn-id before you seed, you can email your textfile and checksums of each of your transfers to Jason Sobel who will enter them into the database and give them a shn-id, or you can just seed away and they'll get a shn-id later when Jason enters them. The entrance gives them the id, and only etree-admins like Jason can do that.
footbear 2008-07-10 15:28:09
That's great news. The easier the better. Judging from all the editting that had to be done to John's tapes, I'm quite confident mine would be a MAJOR upgrade. I'll get on it.
jasonsobel 2008-07-10 17:40:18
just to be clear, it is also possible for anyone to submit a source to etree for approval. Anyone can do that here:
http://db.etree.org/addshn1.php
Once it's submitted, one of the 4 or 5 admins for the Phish section (including myself) will approve the source and it'll be entered. Or, as noted above, if you email me the info, I can enter it directly. Or, alternatively, I look at bt.etree just about every day, and if a seed isn't yet in the db, I'll enter.

I'm looking forward to hearing your tapes, both for this and others that you recorded :) and if you have any other questions regarding seeding or etree or whatever, feel free to email me (jasonsobel@gmail.com).
footbear 2008-07-10 23:45:37
Awesome :-) Thanks Dudes! This will make a fun weekend project.
taperwayne 2008-07-13 02:31:33
Footbear - PLEASE...share your sources!
When I see folk who were taping back in 1990, I'm all over it. LOVE the early years. I've seeded quite a few shows here that have never been in circ before, so if I can assist in any way, feel free to shoot me a line.
treydaman 2008-11-17 17:44:22
