Old Renaissance Fairground, Veneta OR
Lineage:
SBD->two-track MR->DAT->Sonic Solutions->CDR->EAC->
Sound Forge Edit (analog pop removal using pencil tool)->
Sound Forge Pitch Shift (antialias filter followed by pitch shift
of +19 cents)
David Gans seeded the show (SBD->MR->DAT->Sonic Solutions->CDR).
Adam Jerugim obtained a CDR copy, EAC'd and uploaded it to orf.cx.
Leigh Orf did all the post-processing (Sound Forge stuff).
Note: This is *not* the Betty Board source which has circulated before.
This source came from a different two-track master reel (made by the
folks filming the Sunshine Daydream movie) and is mixed differently.

General Comments:
In all the circulating copies of this show I've heard, including
this one, small analog pops were scattered throughout. I believe
they originated at the soundboard or from one of the band member's
instruments. I edited out about 100 of these (hopefully all of them)
with the Sound Forge pencil tool. Click removal software was not smart
enough to find and fix these particular pops.
I noticed as I was listening to this show that it sounded kind of
flat/sour/sluggish. When I finally sat down to give it a thorough
listen, I noticed that there was a definite speed change where Betty
source entered the new source 57 seconds into Playin'. I determined by
using a handheld tuner and the spectrum analyzer of Sound Forge that
the Betty reel was in tune and that the new source was slow (primarily
tuning the show to where the band is tuning after Sugaree; I made Phil's
A3 tune to exactly 220 Hz). Happily, by "tuning" (speeding up) the new
source, everything sounds "right" and the transition from the Betty
source into this source in Playin' no longer had that audible speed
slowdown. I did a pitch shift of +19 cents on all of the show (except
the first 57 seconds of Playin') which effectively "played the original
reel a little faster". Shntool was used to fix the track boundaries
which were now off due to the pitch shift (all the wav files were
shorter).
I was able to make the piano overmodulation distortion starting about
five minutes into Sugar Magnolia slightly more palatable by pulling out
the high frequency components of the distortion using the Sound Forge
Click Removal algorithm and some hand editing. It still sounds bad, but
distortion of this nature is nearly impossible to fix.
Finally, some comments about how this show sounds different from the
Betty source. This reel was originated from the folks who were filming
the Sunshine Daydream movie. The movie source sounds "clearer"; there
is a better defined high end which leads to a less "veiled" sound than
the Betty source. Vocals and high-hat sound clearer and higher in the
mix. Bass is mixed lower; the low bass is especially thin on the movie
source, while the mid-bass is fine. The Betty source, to my ears, sounds
more "veiled" than the new source, and more bassy. The movie source
has more tape hiss than the Betty source, but it's hiss only from the
original reel. My guess is the Betty reels used some form of noise
reduction (Dolby A?) while the movie source did not. In my opinion, this
is the best sounding version of this show currently circulating.
Enjoy, and feel free to send comments my way. Thanks again to David Gans
and Adam Jerugim for making this possible.

Notes:
- There are sound/mix adjustments during Bertha.
- The first 0:55 of Me & My Uncle was amplified by 3db due to low levels.
- There is a cut in Rider at 0:14 with part of the first chorus missing.
- There is a cut in Playin at 0:09 with the very first line of "Some folks trust in reason" missing.
- First few notes of Stella Blue are missing.
- A splice in Dark Star at 28:19 was smoothed with a cross-fade.
- In Dark Star from approximately 25:25 to 28:19 Phil's bass almost completely disappears. Cool Edit's FFT Filter was used to boost the frequency range between 25hz and 375hz. This was partially effective as the time interval from 25:35 to 26:47 apparently contains no bass frequencies.
- Mississippi Half Step was amplified by 2db due to low levels.
- A few minor pops & clicks were removed.

I'm sorry there's been such a long gap between the last DttC and this one. I've had several things come up in my real life; I guess I thought things would proceed a little bit more "as normal" than they did. But there hasn't been much listening time, which holds this back. So it goes.
This torrent contains recordings of three fine Grateful Dead shows from the second half of 1972. Eric is not a man to shy away from the obvious choices in his book, so of course the Field Trip from 8/27/72 is part of the project. Enthusiasts for this show will argue that each song played in Ventura is one of the best examples of that song in history; hyperbole, perhaps, but supportable hyperbole nonetheless. In the Taping Compendium, John Dwork goes further and argues that this show is the best example we have of music as a repeatable transformative psychic experience: if you've never seen it, his review is surely worth checking out. Eric calls out the Bird Song and the Dark Star as the high points here, but he also (realistically) notes that these are peaks from a "mountain range of a show". Everyone shines in Bird Song: Jerry's playing is sweet and melodic; Bobby pushes things along in an interesting, sympathetic way; and Billy is just incredibly in sync with Jerry in all his twists and turns and stops and restarts. Eric detects a note of later Playin' jams in the Dark Star, he really enjoys the interplay between Billy and Jerry throughout, and he particularly appreciates the deep space. Myself, I also enjoy the incredible jamming in the China > Rider, the rocking energy of Bertha, the wildly psychedelic Playin', and the incredibly emotional Sing Me Back Home. There are two soundboard sources for this show: one has a better low-end, the other a better high-end. I've seeded the 2-track source for this show rather than the 16-track for two reasons: first, you are slighly more likely to not have it ;), and second, given that we have to choose between the lack of low-end in this source adn the less present high-end in the 16-track source, I sometimes prefer this mix.
Eric picks 9/28/72 for a couple of reasons -- he likes the way it showcases the breadth of the band's reach (country, ragimme, rock, psychedelia), and because he loves this version of Other One. I'm surprised Eric doesn't say a thing about the first set here (maybe he didn't have a copy?). The set is incredibly well played from start to finish, the sort of set where your preferences rather than the playing are going to dictate which songs you like best. I'd point you towards BIODTL, Big River, Don't Easy, and Tennessee Jed as all being special, but you'd have to listen for yourself. The set-ending Playin' is rich and well-integrated throughout, everyone is deeply involved and interacting, and the buildup and release that structures the whole is qutie remarkably coherent. The second set flows from a Bertha that sounds better to my ears than to Eric's into what could easily be the greatest Greatest Story every played. Things calm down and flow into some fine cowboy songs. Phil wants to get into Other One, but Jerry holds that energy through a sweet He's Gone that focues things into an Other One that ends up being a many-layered explosion that touches all the bases the Dead knew to find. Remarkable. If you like it, you should also check out the Dick's Picks 9/27: they are a matched set in so many ways.
The torrent ends with 11/19/72, a show that's noteworthy for its very strange and spacey Dark Star but shines throughout. In the Taping Compendium, Robert Goetz argues that the show is a great example of the Dead as "cowboy rock 'n' roll" or "southern rock" band -- certainly the dedication to the very recently departed Berry Oakley invites the perspective. Again, Eric doesn't even mention the first set, which is a shame: the Bird Song, The Black-Throated Wind, the Big River, and the China > Rider are all exemplary, and then the Playin' trumps the set. The second set is certainly dominated by the monster Dark Star, a mind-warping version, topped by what Eric takes as a tearing of the fabric of space and time though which a Weather Report Suite Prelude comes back and visits the band, moving first forwards and then backwards. I like all the fun tunings and banter throughout the night, too. Another remarkable show.
==========
This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

This is such an enjoyable ride, I would wait for however long it took. Perhaps from up close, you don't see the magnitude of enjoyment you are providing. Thanks are not enough for this.
And to resume with my favorite show. There were days after I got a copy of the Orf that I would long to listen to it rather than the show I was at!
Thaks, Steve. |

I was starting to worry that you fell off the end of the world Steve.
I'm glad to see that wasn't the case. And a little waiting is good, it gave me some time to catch up on my listening. 12 hours a day, seven days a week is not enough time for some reason. I guess when I notice that I've heard Mexicali Blues three times in one day (which is more times than I ever wish to hear a silly song about catching VD from a child) I figure it's time for some non-Dead music to cleanse the palate!
And thanks again for this great DttC/Dead101 series.

It should also be noted (after many thanks to SteveSW), that the 8/27/72 show occured in Veneta, OR and NOT Ventura (which is in California, and to quote Marrisa Tomei in 'My Cousin Vinnie' by saying "There is no way you could confuse a Buick Skylark to a Corvette").
8/27/72 might not be the best show of all time, but I guarentee you the band was "feeling it" like everyone else that day and that makes it super fun if you decided to have a certain kind of party and play a good show... |

quote taken from Charlie Miller on etree:
07/10/2008 charlie miller I am working on an upgrade from a dat that came from dick. If someone can get me the aud dat for patching, we can get this taken care of.
btw, I think that all circulating "master reel" copies actually have a cassette or reel gen in them.

| I love '72 and believe it to be perhaps the Dead's finest year but IMHO I would have a hard time rating 8-27 in my top five shows for the year. I just think shows from 5-11, 5-26, 4-14, 4-08, 4-26 are clearly better shows and again IMO I think this Dark Star is slightly overated. But I'm eager to listen to this source and I dont have a decent copy 0f 9-28 so thank you! |

dourwolves, most of Bobby's cowboy songs have a "point-of-view" character that we wouldn't want to model our lives after. I think the songs are more enjoyable if you can maintain a steadfast desire to avoid child prostitutes even on repeated exposure to the lyrics ;)
Veneta it is, thanks for the head's up, and it's fixed in the title now so we don't leave a turd behind in the record. I have a poor track record getting those titles right.
I surely look forward to Charlie's version of 9/28/72. It looks like he's stuck on someone getting him a copy of that as-yet-uncirculated AUD -- I hope that shakes out for him soon!
I think there are a lot of shows whose raw popularity makes it difficult to assess them "objectively", TPelts. You hear 'em so often, and you here that they're "the best" so often, that it's hard (for me anyway) to come up with a reaction to the shows outside that context. Often, the most popular shows are smooth but not all that exploratory (73-06-10 and 77-05-08 both spring to mind). Maybe there's some of that to 72-08-27. But as DesDave says, there is a feel to 72-08-27 that reminds me of 70-05-02 -- the band and the crowd are as one, and I at least imagine you can hear that in the music. Be that as it may, listening to 72-08-27 is surely better than a stick in your eye. |

As a brief sidenote, I heard many a turgid Tenn Jed over the years but the 9-28-72 is not one. At the 5 min mark they begin the solo and a little before 6 minutes it cooks beyond/elevates above the other versions I know, charging into the refrain with youthful energy and exuberance. :)
8/27/72 video "Sunshine and Daydream" certainly makes a compelling case for this show to be considered in the top 5 for the year/career. Maybe one day GDM will release it as is or in its entirety. Well worth tracking down a copy of it by trade or d/l. This and 9/28 have a Greatest Story with a St. Stephen jam (cool to have heard The Dead perform it this way in 2003). Oh yeah, there's this Dark Star and a Playin' ...
Gotta give 11-19-72 another listen, thanks again for this series Steve |

I'll take Mexicali Blues over the pointed stick any day!
It may just be hearing what I want to hear, but I seem to hear Jerry lighting a fire (out of annoyance?) under Bobby during Mexicali and El Paso in some of those early '70s shows. I'm not expert enough to cite the particular shows, but as a guitar player myself, I know I've stepped on the Rat pedal and let out a blast when I got annoyed with the singer.
And I love the Veneta show, none of the tunes are stinky and the banter is absolutely priceless. The running dialog with the crowd that the porta-potty pumper truck is going to hose them down turns the whole show into a long and wonderful music hall joke for me. And being a child of the '70s myself, I remember the days when you could actually take your kids to a rock show or the fair, and let them wander wherever they wanted with no fear. Gone forever I'm afraid. I think of those parents, totally wasted: Oh, that's my kid they're talking about...uh, maybe just one more tune, he'll be fine, hey, don't bogart that joint man! And of course we all want to meet our idols, but listening to these guys rap, I just want to hang out with them all day.
Speaking of cool, I'm just thrilled that Phil Lesh is playing 14 shows in Times Square, how many of his peers could do that? Maybe McCartney. He's blowing the dust off guys that don't even know who he is! The man is right up there in the big leagues with Coltrane. Way to go.
