Notes:
Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com on September 3, 2002.
The many fades were done previously, by others.
From the original text file:
MR 2 Track Reel > 7.5 IPS 1/4 tack dolby B reel > DAT > Sonic Solutions > CDR
Some cuts between tracks
Note that there were many technical failures during this show including loss of all tweeters on the first note of "Promised". "Casey Jones" has alot of distortion.

.md5 and .shn's by Mike Hall (myko@well.com)
Track 1 on CD1 are Jack Straw and Box of Rain from the Sound Check.
The following layout is based on 2x74min plus 1x80min.
I originally received these with the encore on cd2.
I like the sequential flow of a show and so bumped cd3 to 80min to put the encores
at the end while keeping the DS>Eyes> China Doll intact.
To make this 3x74, simply move d3t07 and t08 to d2t10 and 11.

Early in the Grateful Dead's history, it seems like they were able to change on a dime when faced with some new influence or band member: think of the move from psychedelic pop to baroque psychedelia in the late 60's when Tom Constantine arrived, and then the move on to song-oriented psychedelic folk when Tom left. Eric notes that the Dead adapted much more gradually to the jazz influences that Keith brought to the band when he arrived in late 1971. Eric points towards the ragtime/swing mode that crept into many of the "first-set" sorts of songs in 1972, and then both the new songs and jazzier jams that characterize 1973. Eric is not alone in thinking that the improvisations within and between songs in 1973 are the year's characteristic moments. It would have been a great time to be a Deadhead.
So far, there are two places where Eric's taste (as manifest in his choice of shows) seems to diverge from mine: he seems almost as fond of vivid banter as he is of vivid music, and he loves break-out shows. How else could you justify picking the first two shows of 1973 as two of the six most interesting shows of the year? You particularly need to understand Eric's taste to understand why he included 02/09/73 -- the show is mostly noteworthy for all the new songs and for the band's struggles with the sound system (some people think the Wall of Sound was mostly a 1974 thing, but this show was actually its premier). In the first set, Eric likes the opening Promised Land, perhaps because of the interplay between Jerry and Phil, but also perhaps because you get to hear half the speakers fry shortly into the song, and then you can track Jerry's guitar as it disappears from the left channel and then starts coming up in volume to the right. He also likes the Me and My Uncle, and then particularly the Playin' to close the set -- the band seems to welcome the opportunity to play a song they know well after all the bust outs throughout the set. In the second set, Eric calls out the China > Rider, the first They Love Each Other, and especially the Truckin' > Eyes > China Doll. After that the show plays out with solid renditions of familiar songs (Big River, Ramble On Rose, and Sugar Mag). Overall, from my point of view, the most interesting thing about this show is how different it sounds from late '72. Folk influences continue to fade; jazz influences are on the rise.
The 2/15/73 show from Madison is more interesting to me than 2/9, with the excellent jamming in Playin', in Here Comes Sunshine, and in Dark Star. Both Eric and the Compendium joke about the short-lived "You Ain't Woman Enough", a song that seems to be on nobody's favorites list. Eric calls out Phil's jamming in the Dark Star in particular, and then especially the place where Jerry enters at the end of Phil's solo (he thinks it's one of the most purely beautiful jams the Dead ever improvised). Eric likes the whole Dark Star > Eyes > China Doll jam, even though Jerry's guitar is somewhat out of tune by the end. He doesn't say anything about the first set: it starts with noteworthy versions of Loose Lucy and BIODTL, ends with a great psychedelic Playin', and has a lot of very good renditions of the standards in between. The Sugar Mag > Sunshine that ends the second set is also a standout. This show is well worth a listen.

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

That 2-15-73 DarkStar >> Phil Zone >> Eyes is, truly, one of the finer moments in the canon.
Thanks for all your ups SteveSW - reinvigorating my interest in some of the old, standard shows. |

| Thanks for these, Stevesw. I dig the 1st show more for the same reasons Eric mentioned. Lots of 1sts and going out on a limb w/ their new sound system. Also, I like them both for other reasons. Back when GDlive was around and you could dl all the vault sbds available, I didnt have access to a high speed internet hookup.( I could have gotten dialup, but fuck that, y'know?) However, my brother, who lives in Caspar(Casper?) Wyoming did. So, even though he wasnt into the Dead by ANY means( He likes Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie..etc.. One mans poison, I guess), he started downloading shows for me. Pretty cool, right? I guess that makes me kind of a dick because I dont think I would have dled Christopher Cross shows for him. But anyhoo, these two shows were the 1st on the spools of shows he began to send. So, they have a sentimental value now as well. It was quite a rush to start hearing '73 shows in vault quality for the 1st time instead of the dubious sounding aud tapes and multi- gen sbds I had begrudgingly become accustomed to. Who'da thunk it would get to what we have now back then, eh? And, I would get a spool per month from him. I just had to call and sit with a Compendium in my lap and give him dates. Good brother I got. Sorry to ramble. This site needs a forum. Thanks for the shows! Cheers. |

that's a great story, waterman. you do have a saintly brother, which is a blessing. and i agree -- we are in a very lucky moment of time relative to the availability of high-quality recordings.
if i were going to pick my favorite '73 shows, it wouldn't be these early shows (which have the attraction of being more raw than most '73 shows), and it wouldn't be the big stadium shows Eric picks from the spring and summer. a friend once turned me on to the fact that the "best" shows from this era are the shows played in small venues in out-of-the-way cities, places where the band could really experiment. those shows have more clunker moments, perhaps, but they also have the most sublime improvisations.
mike, i hope it ends sometime! i imagine it will take more than one more year but less than two to finish, and i imagine its tone will change dramatically once we get out past '77 and we move into the more problematic addition-riddled years.
and yeah, kymule, it's not bad to go back and listen to the classics is it? |

I try to be a 'good brother' too [Mom would be so happy ;-)]
I don't want to stir up any trouble related to anyone's favorite artistes, just suffice it to say my brother and I have wildly divergent musical interests. However, since he only has dialup, I keep an eye out for anything particularly interesting by his faves and d/l them and mail him an audio disk - with the only condition attached being that I don't have to listen to it as it's being burned ;-)
Thanks for all your work putting these DttC bundles together. |

| YES STEVESW, THANKS AGAIN TO YER KIND, GENEROUS ASS FOR ALL YOUR TIME & ENERGY!!! These shows were some of my first cassettes back in 85. They were some of my better sounding ones, and yet they pale in comparison to what is available today! It really is amazing to revisit old favorites long forgotten or just not heard in along time! |

| No, I was kidding. I'd dl anything he wanted with the same quid pro quo Caf mentioned. My brother actually listened to some of the GD he was dling. Still no dice. He would roar with laughter when I'd read some of the show reviews out of the Compendiums. "Some of that sounds kinda gay, doesnt it?" he would ask. I sort of had to agree that some of the reviews bordered on homoerotic. No offense to anyone reading this. None intended. But, a lot of the reviewers were a bit "zealous". At least, it would seem so from an outsiders POV. He actually got really into John Prine when I sent him a copy of "Bruised Orange". And Iris Dement as well. I got to see her at the Lebanon Opera House in Lebanon, NH a couple of years ago and met her after the show. I told her that my brother had a wicked crush on her, so she signed a concert poster for him and his wife. He loved it and hung it up in his office. Well, he wasnt crazy about having his wifes name on his poster, actually(.His wife thinks she's a" yowler.)" That was his only complaint. Maybe. But no one yowls like Iris. The poster was a picture of Iris hanging wash up on a clothes line. He felt that was "utterly appropriate". Heh. Long story short, there' common ground for us all. Sorry. I went off subject a bit. Cheers. |
