Patched using:
AUD1 (shnid = 90351)
AUD2 (shnid = 89681)
Audio Patches:
1) At the beginning of soundboard, 23.658 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source. This includes the cymbal leadin to Morning Dew.
2) Also between Morning Dew and Beat It On Down The Line, 1 minute and 26.758 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source. This includes almost the 1st minute of BIODTL.
3) At the beginning of set 2, 16.685 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD2 source.
4) 12 minutes into He's Gone, 48.325 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source.
5) At the beginning of set 3, 47.419 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source.
6) 1 minutes into Drums, 10.014 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source.
7) 4 minutes into Drums, 17.652 seconds were missing from the SBD source and was filled in with audio from the AUD1 source.
8) Concerning speed correction - I released my matrix of this show where I had used the soundboard as the reference mainly because it had 20 less times where the tape was stopped and then restarted. The actual difference was approximately .5% which is fairly small all things considered but still noticeable. A person who's opinion I respect greatly sent me a PM stating:
"I haven't listened to your matrix, but I think CM's soundboard of this runs 0.5-0.7% fast, so maybe the AUDs were actually correct."
After getting this, I re-listened to the sbd and had to agreed. So, I went back and reversed all the times so basically synced this sbd to the audience. Thanks to R.B. for his help in the matter. As most time corrections are very subjective, I really appreciate any and all help I get in these matters.

The Grateful Dead played four 3-set shows in May and June of 1973. I believe these are the two most "popular" or famous of those four shows.
73-05-26 was played on a sunny spring day at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The New Riders and Waylon Jennings played excellent opening sets. People were throwing babies in the air, beach balls were trundling across the grass: it's hard to imagine a more idyllic setting for a show. The first set is solid through Row Jimmy, where it starts picking up a richness and complexity that crystalized in a great jazzy Playin'. Focus on Billy during this set -- you can hear him build energy and interest that the rest of the band feeds on. The second set picks up where the first let off: Here Comes Sunshine and Loser are really well played, the China Cat > Rider rocks like crazy, and the Bertha towards the end is quite interesting. Eric saves all his commentary for the third set jam, which the Compendium calls "one of the great hours in the history of the Grateful Dead". The jam starts with a noteworthy He's Gone: Donna's singing is tasteful and emotional, Keith's playing is spectacular, and Jerry plays beautifully in the endgame. Eric notes that the Truckin' is great through its body and then truly spectacular in its end jam -- Jerry plays some mean blues licks and then Phil takes over, visiting some well-known jams and then leading the band to The Other One. The Other One is shorter than usual but very interesting, starting mellow and then taking off into outer space via a Tiger meltdown. The starship comes back to earth via an energetic Eyes where Phil and Jerry distinguish themselves yet again, and then (as Eric says) things plunge into the icy waters of China Doll and are spent. It's an incredible ride.
73-06-10 kicked off around 7pm and finished at 2am. It opens with a unexpected and very well-played Morning Dew, then descends into one of those BIODTL that make you wonder were Phil or Donna ever got the idea they could sing. From there the rest of the set moves through a really fine string of songs, well played throughout, and finishes with a fabulous Bird Song and Playin' that make you forget yo're listening to a first set. The compendium points out how Phil and Billy stretch out the Bird Song by nudging Jerry and Keith back together whenever they threaten to get back to the vocals -- it's a very apt description of what goes down. Set 2 is what interests Eric, of course. Eric nominates the opening Eyes as a potential "best ever": he points towards the extreme reaches of Phil and Jerry's jamming in the middle of the song, and then the great rhythmic jamming of all five of the bandmembers in the coda. Phil and Billy drive a gorgeous spaciness at the end of the song that falls into a lovely Stella Blue highlighted by Keith's playing. A nearly perfect Big River follows, and then a Here Comes Sunshine where both Keith and Phil sine. And then comes the jam.... a Dark Star that comes togeter slowly and steadily and features what Eric calls some "Martian Blues" from Jerry and Phil, a He's Gone that Eric says "nimbly wends its way past steaming puddles of dissolved bass notes" on its way to some beautiful work by Keith and Jerry, a Wharf Rat sung particularly interestingly by Jerry, and then what Eric calls an "hot, extravagantly explored Truckin'". The third set is played with Merl Saunders and some of the Allman Brothers: highlights are "That's Alright Mama" and "NFA > GDTRFB > NFA".

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Love the third set on the Kezar show. Listened to it so many times when I first obtained a tape that I still often sing the line "picked up a bottle... cracked him in the jaw" whenever I listen to a m&mu.
Steve, thanks for keeping the thunder rolling. |

I second that! Two of the finest from what some would say is the finest year.
Thanks Steve!

It's all what comes in the book -- I am a humble servant of the book.
Next comes "Noteworthy Truckins". Then a couple of shows from Nov and Dec of 1973. Then "Noteworthy Eyes", "Noteworthy Jams", and "Noteworthy Jam Sandwiches".
I am really enjoying 83535, I've gotten stuck on it the past few days. The separation on the instruments is fabulous, the playing is open and respectful, the interaction is audible and just so fine.... These really are some fine shows. |

| I'm pleased with the patching of "Dew>BIODTL" in the RFK show. I got this show on disc from a bootlegger in Burlington, Vt 10 years ago and just had to grit my teeth through the missing minute or so. I finally got frustrated enough to patch it with a BIODTL from another show later in '73, but the pitch was a bit off and that only served to infuriate me further. So, I propped the discs in a corner of the garage and stared dolefully AND balefully at them. Hateful discs with their flawed BIODTL!. They became The Raven to my Edgar Allan Poe.Sleep walking, I would find myself in the bedarkened garage in the early hours of the morning, fists clenched, trembling with fury, mumbling curses and epithets, confronting the accursed discs, not remembering how I got down there. I was living a nightmare from which there could be no escape. I gave the discs away to a novice Deadhead only to have him return them the next day, his biting rebuke in my ears: "Dude! Whats wrong with BIODTL? I couldnt sleep a wink last night after hearing that laughable patch job.! Its obviously not the same show. How weak, Dude!" So great was my fury and humiliation, not to mention being called "Dude"(horses cock),I covered myself in sackcloth and roamed the streets of wherever I happened to be, calling out before myself;" UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! Take yourselves away from before my detestable personage, lest the curse of the horribly patched BIODTL taint you and your generations!" Then you upped this torrent and now everything is better. |

| The Kezar show is one of my first shows I collected on tape when I really started trading seriously back in 1994/95. The memories of the show, particularly the eyes and the SSDD at the end are so amazing and special, sunny days on the grass in Golden gate. thank you so much for posting these shows. |
