A jam sandwich, as I explained in the text file, is one of those lovely Dead jams where they start with one song, jam their way into a second song, and then return to finish off the first song. There are double-decker jam sandwiches, as in the Playin > Uncle John's > Morning Dew > Uncle John's > Playin' included here.
Why named jams (as in DttC031) and jam sandwiches (as in this collection)? Eric's notion is that the jamming is best when something happens to disrupt the "normal" flow of a song. That might be the appearance of one of the named jams that were surveyed in DttC031, or it might be the appearance of some other song. Both provide interesting opportunities for transition, and interesting structures to contain and encourage exploration. Kind of like sonata form in 19th century classical music I suppose, or sonata form in poetry for that matter. Structure as a basis for the unstructured.
With only a few exceptions, three songs provide the "bread" for these jam sandwiches: Dark Star, The Other One, and Playin' In The Band. In 1976 smaller sandwiches were made with St Stephen and Slipknot a few times, and of course Uncle John's could provide the inner bread for a Playin' double-decker. But it's probably not surprising that the songs that were best for disappearing in the middle and reappearing at the other end were the best for sandwiches -- it's just that, out there in space, some times you come across other songs.
Jam sandwiches were rather common back in the early part of the band's history. Even up to 1977, it seems like a 2nd-set opening Playin' was an announcement of an hour and a half of music that would return to Playin' before it was done. Jam sandwiches are not so common in the second half of the band's career, but they show up at times of interesting jamming (like in 1985, and then again in 1989-1991).
There's no overlap between this torrent and DttC031. The jam sandwiches gathered in DttC032 even fall into different time periods than the jams from DttC031. Taken together, the two torrents contain nearly fifteen hours of extended Grateful Dead jamming, and provide a really thorough survey of the type of high points that the band was capable of.
Enjoy.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

| Nice compilation Steve, I'm trying to think of the 3-day run where the second set of the first day they went into either He's Gone or Morning Dew and finished the song in the second set of the third day! This was a great surprise for those who went to all three days |

| Thanks very much for this and the Noteworthy Jams as well. I'm glad to see the inclusion of the persistent Other One from 11-14-73. I 1st heard that show several years ago. When I got to this part of the show, I was reading HST's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Every time the O1 would go away, it would come back.Like the Langoliers. Chowing everything in sight. Like those whales that are born in captivity and when you turn them loose at adulthood, they just swim back to SeaWorld or wherever they were born. I thought it was the book at 1st, but it turns out it was'nt. |

Wow Steve, you're working like a demon getting these things out, I can't wait to hear them. My hard drive maxed out and then my wife and I had a baby so I'm a few DTTCs behind the curve, I'm just hoping that a few kind souls will keep these torrents alive until I get a new drive and can grab them. And I can't wait to get my little girl down here in my workshop to listen to some good old Grateful Dead. Her middle name is Blue so I'm thinking she'll be tickled with Stella Blue. But of course she's only seven days old so I may be jumping the gun. But she's damn sure going to have a Jerry doll.
I wonder what the wife will say if her first words are "Daaaark Staaaar!!"
Thanks again Steve.

I'm glad you guys are liking this. You're all welcome of course. Thanks go to Eric for the selections, of course, I'm just the guy who's assembling his playlists.
I am glad that this run of four "Noteworthy" collections in five torrents is over. They're a whole lot more work to put together than the torrents filled with shows. But these collections are great to listen to. I've got DttC031 and DttC032 loaded up for random play -- it's an awesome bunch of music for sure. But looking forward to moving on through '74 and '75.
So far, the community has been really great at keeping all these torrents flowing relatively smoothly, it doesn't look like anyone is hanging too long wanting some of this great music. So dourwolves, you can make sure the baby is in clothes before you buy another hard disc ;) I think we'll make these all available for HD B&P when we're done, too. So no worries. |

Pansk, if you download Burrrn, then you can burn shn and flac files directly to a disc without having to first run a conversion. To me, that is much easier than converting in one program and burning with another.
Also, if you use Winamp with the Shnamp plug in, you can listen to flacs and shns directly. Why bother converting at all? |

Did you install trader's little helper, pansk? I've had experiences where, after I installed trader's little helper, the shntool utilities and/or the flac utilities wouldn't work on my machine. I think that TLH installs its own version of those things on the machine, and messes with the registry a little bit. Anyway, in my experience the symptoms you're talking about are caused by that general thing -- conflicts between the different programs you've installed.
I use lame to convert to mp3. I'm old, so I do all my work at the command line ;) |
