Source was decent, but certainly showed some of it's age. I did some tweaks to the spectrum (Waves REQ 4-band), light compression (Waves R-Comp), slight warmth enhancement to the low-end (BBE2 lo-contour) and digitally maximized with the Waves L3 Multimaximizer.

On February 24 of 1974, I was taking calculus from Mr Knapp. Mr Knapp lived over in Kent, Ohio, about fifteen minutes from my little town. He was a short, quiet, bespectacled sort of guy. In addition to being the head of the math department, he was also the guy who ran the scoreboard at the basketball games, and the faculty adviser for the motocross club. Most of the guys on the basketball team were in calculus with me. Because of the ongoing pressure of the "big game" coming up in just a few days, they were able to convince him to put off tests from late in December clear through to April. Which was a good thing for them: most of those guys were not paying too much attention to calculus.
I had it good in 1974, being a high school student there in the suburbs between Akron and Cleveland in Northeastern Ohio. It was rough out in the rest of the world: the Vietnam war grinding on, the economy heading south, social confusion, and all the rest. But it was good that day in San Francisco, too, as Bill Graham introduced the band at Winterland with: "Whatever's going on in the rest of the world, whether it's wars, kidnappings, or crimes, this is a peaceful Sunday night with the Grateful Dead." And then the band opened with US Blues, with the red and the white, and also with the blue suede shoes.
The first set of 2/24/74 is great. Eric notices how well Donna Jean sings on BIODTL, and how fine Jerry plays the Candyman solo. The meat of that set is the sweet, grooving China Cat > Rider and the "long, questing" Playin' that still leans back towards the 1973 versions: energetic, exploratory, but still holding on to the melodic and rhythmic thread. I think the second set is quite well played through and through. They open with an all-time great Cumberland that features a truly excellent extended jam. The Bertha is really energetic, well-sung and well-played, propelled by great drum playing. The Weather Report Suite opening is iconic: it builds slower than you think it will, so there's an excitement and tension of thwarted forward motion, but then the playing is so interesting and precise that the waiting is more than worth it. Eric spends most all of his time focused on the 44 minutes of Dark Star > Dew. He notices how it leans more forward and into 1974, with the quick abandonment of the main theme, the jazzy drumming, the deep space (note Bobby's playing in those early moments), the deeper space, the deep-deep Spanish space (note that Jerry is the one who holds onto space when everyone else wants to settle into the Spanish Jam), and then the return of melody and the entrance into Morning Dew. Eric calls this a great Morning Dew, propelled by Bobby's careful and interesting playing throughout the first few verses. The rest of the show is well played -- those NFA > GDTRFB > NFA closers may have been cliched, but they sure sound good listening back in time.
While 2/24/74 had at least part of one foot back in the more rollicking 1973 sound, 5/19/74 is more of a quintessential 1974 show. Eric says that this show is to 1974 as 5/8/77 is to 1977 -- the show you might hold up to illustrate what the band was doing at this time. Eric spends an unusually long time going through te first set. He loves the opening Half-Step. He thinks Bobby does great with Black-Throated Wind. He thinks this is a show where Donna shines, on the wail in Scarlet, in the BIODTL, in the Loose Lucy, even in the Money Money (a song she really didn't like). And the set-closing China Cat > Rider is a great version, particularly given the "Feelin' Groovy" jam in the middle. In the second set, Eric thinks that this Weather Report Suite is even better than the one from 2/24. He calls out the Wharf Rat as an all-timer, and then argues that the Truckin' is even better than that. Jerry plays excellently in the Mind-Left-Body jam, and then into the NFA-GDTRFB-NFA. This is a show which had to exhaust everyone involved, the sort of show you only dream of in normal life. "Thanks a lot, Portland, we love ya" indeed.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

The 5/19 remaster is a pretty extreme remaster: very clear and present, kind of like the loud button on the stereo. I shared it because it looked like there was already a torrent around for the other 5/19 source:

| Thank you! I am more partial to the 02/22 of the Winterland run - guess it's just closer to the '73 sweetness - but they are, OF COURSE, all good. When is the AUD of the 5/19 ever going to surface? Keep the pure goodness flowing SteveSW! |

SteveSW! Yet again you've slammed us with two of a great year's greatest shows! I love this thread you're giving us, bro. It's your (and Eric's) cream of the crop -the best of the best of the best shows and damn good reasons why. If a couple of long-time, obviously bright, and dedicated Dead Heads are telling me that "X" show from "X" year is an all-timer and it's worth checking out, you bet your ass I'm going to check it out!
On a side note, keep the personal anecdotes coming! On 2/24/1974 I was eight days old, chillin' in a Brady Bunch themed studio apartment on the Canadian border in Upstate, New York. I like to think I was pulling on a fat one and listening to something from Winterland at the time, but I was probably wondering what the hell Snufalopougus was and hating the hell out of strained green beans. I'm not going to b.s. anybody -not my game. |

SteveSw, you have no idea how much joy the music you've been posting has been giving me. Thank you so much for a really great upload series. It must be a lot of work putting so many torrents together so quickly, but I want you to know how grateful I am, as I'm sure the rest of the community is.
On a side note, I've always loved calculus. I actually spent this evening trying to broaden my horizons and research the gamma function. |

I like thir13en's remasters a lot, but Steve has it right when he says that they're kind of "extreme." They make shows sound almost too perfect, and almost studio-sterile. I use them particularly to play to people who just want to hear the music and aren't concerned about fidelity to the experience or to the recording history.
I'm glad he turned his hand to a Dead show! especially this one.
(and thanks again, Steve). |
