Brussels was a great show, though a bit hot, especially in front row :-P
But the performance was top class, although it was odd to see mark giving directions to his team about where possible videotapers were located. i guess the average user will not have noticed that too much, but whatching him do that from so close was a bit funny (not as in humorous)
Guy's Diary:
We always look forward to the Forest National. On the Emmylou tour it was our first show and it's always a real treat and tonight was no exception.
Danny and I had a little wander around the town, and a quick bite to eat in a particularly average bistro where the maitre-d stands out front and coerces tourists to dine.
In a street where competition is fierce, he got us.Then it was back to the Amigo and off through the Brussels traffic to the gig for sound check and a meet and greet.
Below, TC (Tom Calcaterra) busily tunes Richard's guitars, a relentless stream of machine head-turning.
This evening's show could be classified as a roaster. The temperature in the hall must have been above a hundred degrees, an utterly incredible crowd, possibly the noisiest of the tour so far. The band was magnificent if a little sweaty. I shot this from the stage during LH at the end. Mike was taking some pics of the band so I grabbed the camera and snapped him, rather badly, but it does convey the atmosphere to some extent.
A runner back to the hotel bar and we're sitting down to our Leffe blondes and draught Stellas by 10:30.
Did you know that Until Joseph Bramah patented the 'beer engine' in 1785, beer was served directly from the cask and carried to the customer.
Richard's Diary:
A quick correction to the Cologne notes. The venue we played was the Koln Arena which is located on Willy Brandt Platz.
After yesterday's marathon sleep in, I decided to leave a 10 a.m. wake up call and make a proper day of it.
Coffee and toast courtesy of room service then down to the hotel gym, one of the better of the tour, for a 90 minute measure of humiliation.
A quick shower and out the door for a wander round the old town. Our hotel is just behind the beautiful town square and it's many cobblestone side streets.
Hundreds of small cafes, bars, tourist trinkets, lace shoppes and nods to Herge's Tin Tin and Snowy, not to mention the famous piss-boy fountain surrounded by holiday makers having their photos taken.
I vaguely recalled a used record shop, almost certain it was here in Brussels but not quite sure.
I'll be darned if I didn't stumble across it just near the urinating boy. A brilliant array of jazz, old film soundtracks, rock and roll, lounge and exotica vinyl, all of it right up my street.
I couldn't resist buying a couple of early albums by The Shadows, Chris Barber with Lonnie Donegan playing banjo, George Barnes, Red Norvo Trio with Charlie Mingus and Tal Farlow and two Ben Webster albums.
All this and it was only 14:30 (2:30) in the afternoon. It pays to get up.
Our gig tonight was the Forest (Vorst) National Arena, our usual venue in Brussels.
I've played here on every tour with MK since 1996 and have a wonderful picture of my son in the loading docks from that year.
Over the years the docks have been decorated with spray painted graffiti from a thousand different bands that have played here.
Nick was with me for a week or two on that trip and was young teenager then. As I recall we found the Aerosmith tagging and had a pic made with loads of road cases all around.
Hard to say how many were in there tonight, it was a standing floor with tiered seating round the perimeter. Many thousands I would say...8, 10??
Whatever it was, you couldn't have squeezed another person in the place....jam packed to the rafters, every seat taken and every bit of floor space occupied.
Hot as hell, certainly the hottest gig of the tour so far. By the third song in the set I was saturated, had to peel the guitars off me after that.
What a great gig and what an amazing audience....maybe the best of the tour this far.
I've been doing these tours with Mark since '96 and we've always had great audience turnout and reception, but crowds and response on this tour is something else all together and we're playing better than ever and enjoying every minute of it.
Back to the hotel bar for drinks and sandwiches then a quick stop in Guy's luxurious lounge for tea and sympathy. What a day.
So long,
Richard
Thanks to the band, and to Guy and Richard for their awesome online tour diaries
Sound quality is excellent.

Apparently, Mark needs trained attack dogs that can sniff out video equipment. Hey, the *actual* original title of the song "Brothers In Arms" used to be "Brothers In Arms (Not Carrying Video Gear To Tape My Show Without My Permission!)". I cna see why he shortened it, the original title *is* a bit long, but if he'd have kept it, he might not have to spend his time onstage searching for video bootleggers. Mark enjoy the show? Hey, catching video bootleggers while performing popular songs to massess of adoring fans who paid good money to see me perform *is* fun! What, did you think living the life meant all the sex, substances, massages, saunas, room service, lackeys to do all the things I refuse to do because "I'm the star!", AND MONEY anyone could ever want? NO, no, no! It's catching the video bootleggers that motivates me. Really gets me in the zone. Dude, who cares? Someone shot handheld, shakey, out of focus video of you from 100 meters away... they might even post it on YouTube and this affects my bank account, personal happiness, and social standing in what way exactly.
Mark Knopfler may have a life, but apparently he's wasting a good portion of it being a cop trying to bust fans rather than being a musician enjoying the privilige of playing his music to thousands of adoring fans (who make his bank accounts bloated with cash)! Sheesh. Knofpler should be embarassed... publicly... like what I'm doing here (but times a thousand)! I'm going to attend one of his shows with fake video equipment and hopefully get roughed up by his goon squad and sue him for millions of pounds of cash! Hey, Mark Knopfler, if you don't want people to video tape you, stop playing live... Nobody likes seeing a person more caught up in his ego than in his music!!! |
