For whatever reason, once I started to see the Dead regularly in the 80s, my grail was Help > Slipknot! > Franklin. There were songs I would have preferred that I was unlikely to see (Dark Star, Viola Lee, The Eleven). There were songs I loved that happened often enough (Estimated > Eyes, Scarlet > Fire). But I went a long time without seeing a full Help > Slipknot! > Franklin, and ever after I cherished those shows when that jam was played.
I am actually more of a Help > Slipknot! fan than a Franklin's fan. I figure Help > Slipknot! is harder play tan Franklin's, which is why the band dropped them for all that time. It's hard to find interest in an 11 minute Franklin's, though I have tried and achieved the experience. Nonetheless....
To return to the matter at hand, the point I was trying to make is, these '76 shows are particularly precious to me because the Help > Slipknot's were so beautiful. The Help that starts off 76-06-19 is particularly well extended, very sweet to my ears. The Compendium reviewer calls the show "tight" (as if that is bad). His complaint was, his notes kept saying "great", and then "great", and then "great". His conclusion was, if they played every single song perfectly, they were never being experimental enough to make mistakes. I think that sums up 1976 as well as anything, so, if you like well-played and attended-to music from this band, it's not a bad year. After Help > Slipknot > Franklin's, the first set descends to just wonderful until Looks Like Rain, at which point things kick back up to exemplary for the rest of the set. The Playin' that finishes the set has more of its roots in 1974 than 1976, which is to say that it kicks ass. The second set has a fabulous High Time, then two great jams. The Let It Grow / Dancin' thing, and then the rock-out that closes the show. It's all good -- this is a show to turn on the skeptic to the best 1976 has to offer. There are two sources here because the encore circulates separately. So it goes.
Back in Eric's day, 6/19 got its due, but 6/24 was overlooked. I'm not sure because I wasn't there back then, but 6/24 is another killer show. We have it in this great matrix which captures both the excellent playing and the small-venue aud feel, so I've shared that. I think this show announces its energy at the beginning: a Cold Rain and Snow that has really cool interplay between Jerry and Bobby and Keith, and then a Big River that really rocks (a best ever version? maybe...). Things chill until you get to Lazy Lightnin', at which point the rest of the first set just takes off. The Scarlet Begonias is incredible, and the Promised Land rocks to a close. There's another great Help > Slipknot! > Franklin's to open the second set, complete with spices from Allah and the Allman Bros. The Warf Rat > Dancin' is astonishing, too. Eric had a tape from the other plane when he eard a complete "That's It For The Other One" on this night. So it goes.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Hmmmm, methinks we have an invasion in the gd1976-06-19.prefm.unknown.12077.sbeok.shnf folder. I was tracking this out for a CDR-burn (yeah, I know, I'm an old fart) and I found some tracks that didn't fit the 06-19-1976 show being seeded:
d3t05 Cassidy 4.46
d3t06 Tennessee Jed 8.48
d3t07 Let It Grow > 11.19
d3t08 Wharf Rat > 5.38
d3t09 more Wharf Rat > Comes A Time 14.53
d3t10 Dancin' In The Streets 7.12
A little checking says this is 06-12-1976 @ Boston, MA (seeded earlier in DttC-038) but I can't figure out why it's in here unles someone earlier had it as some filler on an otherwise short 06-19-1976 d3.
And just for the record, I'm a little dubious about this 06-19-1976 being called a "pre-FM" source because (1) the compression sounds typical of an FM recording, and (2) because just as Around is starting you hear a splash of FM static. My .02 and ymmv, but I'm still glad to have this recording for all the reason Eric mentions.
Also, just in case anyone else is tracking this to CDR, the Cosmic Charlie really fits better at the end of d2 than at the beginning of d3, especially since it's a segue from Grow > Drums > Grow > Dancin > Cosmic.
This is the way my revised text file looks:

Sorry for leaving that filler in there, and thanks for sorting it out PastorTim.
Yeah, albaners, the deep parts of the bt.etree torrent library can move a little slow at times. You're best off if you stay on the front page or three of the site, I think. But if you just open and older torrent and sit on it, and be patient, the music will often come eventually. If you're going to explore those older torrents, it's particularly important that your port is open. |

| What i wanted to get at was 120 people snatched this show.If they all seeded something at the same time there wouldn't be so many shows with no seeds. |

what i wanted to get at was the advice that it's easier on the mood to accept what you find at eTree than to harbor judgments and notions about how it should be. because it's going to be what it is regardless. eTree is pretty steadfastly itself. i think it's very cool.
depending on what band you like, there are other sites that are more consistent about keeping things available. for instance, if you like the grateful dead you might want to check out www.shnflac.net or gdvault.com.
sorry if it sounds like i'm being critical, i am more trying to be constructive. |

Thanks for your project, Steve; very much appreciated. An excellent effort and one that along with the Dead To The Core book has increased my enjoyment of GD music.

| I am hoping Charlie Miller works on the 6-19 show soon. We need a version with a complete Cosmic Charlie. Thanks for these seeds, text is an enjoyable read. |

| Thank you! This looks like a nice pair of shows. I, too, am a big fan of the Help On The Way/Slipknot! medley and much prefer it over Franklin's Tower so this will be nice to hear. Much appreciated! |
