Eric's last selections for 1976 were the very fine concerts the band played in Oakland in early October. They shared the venue with the Who, of all things. I'd argue that the first show didn't really start taking off until the second set and was cooler and more interesting, while the second show rocked from one end to the other. You can go out and by fine recordings of these two shows as Dick's Picks 33. You can also download perfectly good audience recordings of the two shows at these links:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1976-10-09.aud.fix-10179.tetzeli.sbeok.83819.flac16
http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-10-10.hollwein.vernon.11670.sbeok.shnf
Since you have so many fine opportunities to get your hands on those shows, I've decided to share the shows from LA from later in the week, instead. These shows were the first time the Dead played in Southern California since their "retirement" hiatus, so you can imagine people were stoked. The compendium talks about signs put up by the LAPD announcing "This is not a pot-smoking sanctuary", which probably harshed some folks' buzz. But the playing was just fine, and I'm guessing some pot was smoked, the signs notwithstanding.
While the 10/14 show only really becomes wonderful towards the end of the second set, the whole thing is solid. I like the Cassidy to Peggy-O to Big River stretch in the first set, and then the Scarlet Begonias that ended the set. The second set gets better (if the songs are relatively mundane), and then really takes off with a jam that starts with a year's-best quality Dancin', flows into a sweet Wharf Rat, flows back into a decade's-best quality Dancin', and then on into the rockers to end the show. It's worth a listen for those songs alone (and it's why we think of this as a SBD when we only get the second set that way).
The 10/15 show is even better. I think things start catching fire near the Bertha in the middle of the first set. By the closing Sugaree and Promised Land, the band is hot and out there, definitely riding the energy wave. The second set opens with a sweet Eyes > Music Never Stopped, it features the first He's Gone of the year, and then it ends with a mostrous Other One > Comes A Time > Franklin's > Sugar Mag. The whole jam is so good, I'm willing to forgive the terrible sin of playing Franklin's without Help and Slipknot (I hate it when that happens).

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

I left out the most interesting thing about these October '76 shows!
If you know '77 and have listened to some of what we've seeded so far, I think it's easy enough to hear some '72 and some '73/'74 and some '76 along with premonitions of '77 at various times in these shows. It's as if they had used the summer to get their act back together, and now they were considering where they had been and started looking forward to where they might go. It's interesting to listen to these shows with that thought in your ears. |

| Thanks Steve! And again, I have to agree with your comment that a Franklin without Help/Slip just ain't...whatever |
| Lesh Lush |
2008-09-16 01:27:11 |
I also like it better when Franklin's follows a Help/Slip, but I can definitely stomach the ones that follow Mississippi Half-Step.
I'm going to risk the hurling of all manner of invectives and vituperations at my person and say that while the playing within each part is almost always superior, the Dead never managed to play a transition from Slipknot into Franklin's as awesome as the one one the album. The key is the fact that Jerry solos through the transition. Jumping straight to the riff just isn't as powerful to me. Feel free to shower me with insults, I'm sure this is heresy.
Thanks for the great upload, Steve. |

| I will agree with you on that point. I am sure I speak for a minority of three or four when I say that Franklin's always rocked harder out of 1/2 Step or even 1/2 Step>Stranger>Franklin's. My bias is probably because I started to to show in 1981 and did not hear a Help>Slip>Tower jam for years. And, the 1/2 Step>Tower was one of "rotation" openers. It would be years later before I heard the "Blues for Allah" record and even longer before I heard the more traditional jam live. My biggest issue is probably that Jerry could play Help on autopilot but too many Slipknot jams went absolutely no where until Bobby got bored and started playing the chords for the intro into Tower. |

| I just thought I'd add that I have really fallen in love with these '76 Dancin' in the Streets. That song usually gives me a bad taste in my mouth because it reminds me of the terrible Jagger/Bowie version, but man, the Dead can play it with style! |
| SteveSw |
2008-09-18 02:32:18 |
based on some of these comments, i am straying from my previous pattern as i put together the "noteworthy help/slipknot and franklin" torrent. i am adding some things that eric praised individually but didn't add to his list (his is purely h>s>f's), so I can share some of those franklin's in other contexts. one of them is a dancin > franklin, do you know it?
should be up friday at the latest... |

| Gettin off topic now, but that ONE Shake->Frank (19801129) is the slickest, most organic slide into Franklin's I've ever heard, bar none. |

| I'm not familiar with the Dancin'>Franklin's, but I can't wait to here it. The more I think about it, that does seem like a pairing that would work really well. They kind of have a similar vibe. |

Lesh Lush,
I'm a Dancin' hater too, particularly the Jagger/Bowie embarrassment, even the Mamas and the Papas, who were amazing, annoy me when the street dancing begins, but I fully agree and I love the funky '70s Dead version! Always nice.
Steve,
I can't believe how many of these things you've rolled out while I've been lost in newborn baby land, I'm never going to catch up! I've been stuck on '77 Dead for the past month and I see you're almost there already. I still think Brent is a bit of a wanker but as for Donna, I can't get enough of her in '77. Those "You Were Gone"s with her are absolutely transcendent, even my wife turns it up. You mentioned hd b&p the last time I checked in. Do people really do that? Is there anyone that could catch me up on the last month of DTTC torrents in such a way?
Cheers,
Donovan |
