1977. I think of 1977 as the universal donor year. In the land of blood banks, the universal donor blood is the blood everyone likes. There is other blood that folks *are*, but the universal donor blood is the blood that everyone can accept. Just so, 1977 is the Grateful Dead music that everyone likes. There are some heads who love the stadium rockin' music of their favorite parts of the 80s and 90s. There are some heads who love various years before this one. But everyone loves 1977.
And I love 1977 too. I love it because it was the last year before the bad drugs came into the band. After 1977, our love of particuar shows starts to be a way of tracking the daily bad-drug use of one or another members of the band. 1977 is the last year before that happens.
1977 is a year where the band is back in full form, they've incorporated Mickey, and they've worked out how to jam. They don't go off to the far planets very much any more, but they sure do jam within the songs. It's the most accessible year, the year to use to turn on open minds to great music. It's a fun year to listen to. And Eric has opened the door to a lot of good sharing. His essay about 1977, in his book, is as good and insightful writing as he did. You should buy the book just to read it. Go! Buy it!
Eric's first recommendations focus on the Feb and Mar shows the band did in California. These shows are unique: they are the raw explorations from the lab that would yield May '77. Eric likes 2/26, probably because he likes bust-outs: a great Terrapin to open the show!!!, and then another great (if ur) Estimated shortly thereafter. The great parts of the show are the Playin' > Wheel > Playin' jam in the first set, and then the Help > Slipknot > Franklin and Eyes > Dancin' in the second set. I like 2/27 better: the first set has a better Estimated than 2/26, and a great Good Lovin'. The second set is just wonderful: the last solo Scarlet, and then an astonishing vulnerable St Stephen that is just to die for. The evolution of Terrapin here is great: these early versions make you think that turtle sushi must be better than turtle soup. So far as I know, you can only get 2/27 as an AUD: the available recording is here...

Eric also recommends 3/18/77 from Winterland. He actually recommends the first set! not because of the Half-Step or the Sugaree or the PEggy-O or the Minglewood, but rather because of the first Scarlet > Fire to end the set. It's an astonishing one for a first one, definitely a keeper, but the rest of the set stands up to it. The second set is mostly noteworthy because of the unique extended Terrapin suite, and then the second St Stephen out of NFA. You'll have to do a little dicing and slicing on the sources, as there's a patch of a couple of songs that's available separately.
Myself, I agree with the Compendium reviewer that 3/19 is better played than 3/18. Keith is on fire. Even the cowboy songs from the first set rock, and then after a great Tennessee Jed and Estimated, the band launches into a remarkable Terrapin > Playin' > Samson > Playin' jam to end the first set. The second set is only Eyes > Dancin' > Wharf Rat > Franklin's > Sugar Magnolia. Whew.
I return to these shows. They show the virtuoisity of 1977 without the control, the joy of 1973/74 without the lack of focus. Remarkable....

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Eric_A_Deadhead,
Just because I'm curious, is there a reason your comment contains 513 capital C's? |

Wow, Eric -- when you added all those C's you effectively pushed the "Add Comment" link off the right edge of the browser. Some of these folks were clever enough to find it, but I was not.
Lesh Lush, I think the reason his comment contains 513 capital C's is that he pushed the capital C key a whole bunch of times.
crazy4golf2003, there was a 1987 project over at gdvault.com, and there's now a 1988 project. |

| Touche SteveSw, I never would have guessed, ha ha. I was more curious as to why he pushed the C key that many times. |

But there you're penetrating levels. One has to be crisp about levels. It's a common/big mistake to ask a question at one level that deserves an answer at a different level. Play around this phenomenon has created tens of hundreds of PhDs since it was discovered that real thinking is hard.
I am glad that people are coming to this torrent slowly: it gives me a chance to put off the work on the Scarlet > Fire collection.... |

Speaking of big logical mistakes, how do you know that "he pushed the capital C key a whole bunch of times"? For one thing, there is no capital C key; he had to press the generic C key either in tandem with shift, or with a preemptive caps lock. Also, he might have only pressed it once and held it down for a long time, or pressed it a handful of times for moderately long durations.
You made me laugh with the phrase "tens of hundreds." |

I must admit, I was trying to make you laugh with the "capital C key" too.
My guess is, Eric is trying to make you laugh more often than you think. He indulges himself along the way, which in some sense defines what he is trying to do. It doesn't work so often, but then, this is not a paying venue, so it's a good place for him to practice. |

I think he just feel asleep on the entire left side of his keyboard and the only reason he's quiet now is
because he rolled off and bonked his head on the floor. Don't worry, he'll be fine in a day or two. |

| This torrent has been very slow to close out. And I am experiencing weird behavior from the torrent server where my torrents are claimed to be "bad". I am going to wait out those two things before seeding the next DttC torrent. |
