There are ways in which 1978 is a lot like 1977 (the same folks in the band for instance, but there are also some noteable differences. Eric points out two notable differences: 1978 shows are often more Jerry-centric and less of an ensemble affair than were 1977, and the best of 1978 is often more exploratory and adventurous than 1977. Early in the year, the band pursued the rockin' energy that you could hear in 11/6/77 and 12/29/77. Jerry's guitar is rowdier, and just sounds more heated and fuzzy than in the past. Phil is less a lead player and more locked into the drums, Keith is less inventive and present, more into the chords. Later in the year, Jerry's guitar sound changes again, to what Eric describes as more of a pinched, muted wah-wah sound -- "tight little pearly notes strung together" is how he puts it. Things got more fluid later in the year, the band sounds more like JGB than usual, with Jerry leading the improvization and other folks following.

The first four of Eric's recommendations for 1978 are 1/22, 2/5, 4/24, and 6/4. 2/5 is a Dick's Pick, for good reason: both the Scarlet > Fire and the Truckin' > Drums > Other One > Wharf Rat jams are really noteworthy. You might want to check out the audience recording available on the LMA:

The 1/22/78 show is an excellent example of Jerry's early-year guitar sound, and also of the driving energy characteristic of the best of these 1978 shows. It's a good introductory show you should check out if, for some reason, you don't like 1978. The first set has great energy: Jerry's jams in Minglewood and Terrapin are broad and raw and metalic, and the whole band goes crazy in the Jack Straw. Peggy-O and Row Jimmy are sweet contrasts, and things close with an excellent Music Never Stopped. The energy carries over into the Bertha > Good Lovin' second set opener, and then redoubles through an ever-building Terrapin > Drums > Other One that explodes with energy. Eric notes how the energy ebbs and flows within Terrapin, releaseing at "inspiration" and then building again. I think the Drums > Other One transition and the first jamming in the Other One is truly spectacular, though the entire Other One is worth both careful attention and rowdy dancing at home. Towards the end the Other One goes way out into space and finds the Close Encounters theme (zuounds) on the way back to St Stephen > NFA. This is a show that will wear you out, even if you listen to it on the road. Lotza bounce.

Eric recommends 4/24/78 especially to those who love Scarlet > Fire. But the whole show is worthy: Phil is locked in, Keith is more involved than usual for 1978, so things are interesting. There are a lot of great moments in the first set: the interplay between Bobby and Jerry in Ramble On Rose (gotta love that early Bobby slide work!), the "Staylin' Alive theme that shows up before and then during the cowboy songs, the well-played Cassidy, and Jerry's sweet singing in Brown-Eyed Women and It Must Have Been The Roses. The Scarlet > Fire that starts the second set is brilliant, again with that 1978 quality of dancibility and jamming interest all mixed together, and also with more Bobby slide work that fits right in and sounds just fine. After Terrapin there's a great Drums > NFA that shows how the drummers had been contributing to that dancible vibe. The Black Peter, Around, and Werewolves that end the show are also far better than usual, and so bring the show to a great conclusion.

6/4/78 follows a four week break the band took at the end of the spring tour back east. I particularly like the fun banter between songs, and the joyful energy I hear throughout the evening. This is the night that Bill Graham got his "Uncle Bobo" nickname -- who can beat that. And Jerry is having fun, throwing lots of little vocal flourishes around all through the show. The first set is fun: a great Bertha > Good Lovin' opener, playful cowboy songs, good jamming in Jed and Jack Straw. The second set is even better. The long, well-explored Estimated flows well into a bouncy fun Eyes. The Space out of Drums is monsterous and fascinating, and it goes into a NFA > Nobody's Fault > NFA that is exemplary both for Jerry and Bob's guitar interaction and for Donna achieving an incredible height in Donna-ness in her vocal solos. The rockin' energy never lets up through a wildly-played GDTRFB, a fun Around where Donna teases Bobby for stuttering, and then towards-the edge versions of US Blues and Sugar Mag. Much happiness!

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Thanks, I needed this! Always dug the Santa Barbara show, more for the "vibe" than anything else, it's unique. Thanks for all your hard work. btw: the 780110 matrix floating around is nice, also, very nice. I'm def looking forward to these!!!

SteveSW, making his mark on the walls of GD history!

Thank you very much for all the work you are doing sharing the Greatful Dead's music. I'm loving all the torrents you have shared so far.

Bill Graham got his Uncle Bobo nickname in San Diego earlier in '78. 01-08-78 actually.

SteveSW: Thank you for this most recent installation! This DttC series has been a real pleasure and I don't blame you for believing Eric... I mean, why take the word of an Ivy League educated guy who works as a producer for CBS and writes, edits, and publishes killer books about the Grateful Dead over some dude who we don't know anything about?
avtdeadhead 2008-10-18 21:01:37
Hey folks... thanks for the DttC run!

My first show was the 5/5/78 show at Dartmouth. I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a board recording of that show? I'd love to have a copy of where my long strange trip began. The acoustics at Thompson Arena were pretty bad and I've wondered about finding a board recording that would sound better than the audience recordings I've come across from time to time.

Three great shows here, get em if you don't got em! 78 is great, not every show, but the good ones (such as these) take the 77 groove to another level.
superfreakie 2008-10-19 06:06:11
I agree with the above post, I much prefer the good 78 shows over any 77 show. The jamming is riskier and groovier. SF

Sorry, meant no offense...i too look forward and greatly appreicate the DTTC series, and enjoy reading the comments. Just wanted to correct the record on that one point about Uncle Bobo :-)

Bobby and Phil named Bill Graham "Uncle Bobo" at the 01/08/78 show. It was Bill's birthday and, as Bobby explains, the band did not have time that day to buy a gift so they somehow concluded, in typical GD fashion, that the gift Bill needed was a new name. There are a couple of sources for the origin of "Uncle Bobo" -- I think it was a Europe '72 inside joke -- but Bill always made clear that he hated that nickname. And, as with all similar things GD related, the more Bill complained about hating the nickname, the more it was used.

There is a connection a "Uncle Bobo" connection to 06/04/1978 which is probably why Eric thought this was the first time. At the 6/4 show, Bobby substitutes "Uncle Bobo" for "Uncle" for the entire version of "Me and My Uncle" that they played that night. He also thanks "Uncle Bobo" at the end.

I could see why Eric thought the 6/4 "Uncle Bobo" was the first. At the tine. when tapes were distributed slowly through trees and vines, 1/7 and 1/8 were "West Coast" shows and were also unique shows because Jerry does not sing any song at either of these two dates. Both set lists are all Weir songs. The 6/4 show would be the show to get if it were all "snail mail" just for the absolute killer "Jack Straw" that closed the first set.

That said, the 6/25 Autzen Stadium show (first rock concert ever at the stadium) is superior in almost every way to the 6/4 show. First, there are common elements between the two shows that allow for comparisons One element is because the only difference in the 2nd set was substituting "Friend of the Devil" for the 6/4 "Ship of Fools". This is way cool just by how it conceptually sounds on paper. "FOTD" almost never shows up in the 2nd set much after that. The last two times that it was played in a 2nd set were 10/25/79 and 7/2/89.

The other common element is that both shows featured Ken Babbs and his Merry Pranksters. At the 6/4 show, their motorcycles feature only in the lead-in to "Not Fade Away". For a short time toward the end, both Jerry and Bobb can be heard jamming (!) with the bikes. The 6/25 show also features "Ken Babb and the Thunder Machine" performing their antics during Drums --> Space. With the motorcycles as the kick off the band goes into orbit for "NFA --> GDTRFB --> Around and Around". This song order was fairly typical for the time but this performance takes place in the orbit of Jupiter or some other far away place where man has yet to physically explore (as opposed to "psychically").

There is no SBD in circulation for 5/5/78. I am not certain what source was used by the Compendium, but SHN#18655 could be mistaken for a bad SBD but is actually an AUD. There is a fairly recent remastering by Adam Egert of a Barry Glassberg recording (FOB -- 30 feet from the state) that is well worth a listen. It is SHN#82962 and can be downloaded (or streamed) from the LMA. The other known source, was an early AUD that doesn't have much going for it in the quality improvement department.
SteveSw 2008-10-19 13:15:11
oh no, rmackenzie, no offense taken! i really had just read that in the book and repeated it without doing much other research. as OutOfIraq explains so clearly, there are good reasons why Eric's information was only "partial" back at that time.
SteveSw 2008-10-19 13:15:32
And OutOfIraq -- it's really good to read you here. I hope you are doing OK.
avtdeadhead 2008-10-20 06:50:57
Thanks OutofIraq!

That tip for about the Dartmouth 5/5/78 on LMA was great. I know I checked for the show there before, but SHN#82962 seems to be of higher quality than what I had found prior.

Thanks again!
