The rest of Eric's recommendations for 1978 are pretty heavy on Egypt in September and then the Winterland shows played immediately thereafter. Since youall have an excellent opportunity to purchase the best of those shows as Road Show V1.N4 and Rocking The Cradle, it seems best to focus on Eric's last recommendation of the year (11/20) and some of the other great shows from late November and December. That's another period with its highs and lows, but with some astonishing gems that are often overlooked.
First up here is 11/18/78 from the Uptown in Chicago. I could as easily have picked 11/17 -- they're both excellent shows in terms of energy and jamming, well worth having in even a smaller collection. Sadly, the Jack Straw that opens 11/18 is cut, but you can feel the energy right away. Each song in the first set is really excellent. Big River here is as good as it gets, the Sugaree is a lovely languid 15-minute snake of a version, and the Stagger Lee features Bobby at his '78 slide-playin' best. But those are just some highlights -- you could imagine calling out each song here. The Scarlet > Fire to start the second set is short but sweet. Things really stretch for the heavens in the weird and wonderful He's Gone -- I'm not sure I know many other versions like this one. From there Phil takes the band into a pre-drums Other One (!?!) that is excellently jammed. The compendium says that the Olin Arageed Jam flowing out of Drums is the only one ever played -- a Moorish version of the Spanish Jam, perhaps, really worth a listen. This is what you get in the best shows from 1978 -- the consistent quality of a 1977 show, with weird improvisational moments more characteristic of 1972.
Eric recommends 11/20 mostly for its second set, and I have to agree: with the exception of the Lazy Lightnin' > Supplication that ends the set, the first set is nothing to write home about. But that's OK, you want the show anyway because of the truly weird 2nd set. It starts with a kind of normal tuning/noodling bit, but instead of fading into some other song it kind of grows and grows and grows until it's a full-bore committed jam. The drummers seem to love this, they really grab it by the throat, and soon you're off into a drums as the second track of the second set. It's a good one, and it fades back into more jamming, and then (of all things) into Jack-a-Roe, which fits in some odd way. From there we get a remarkable Playin > Shakedown > If I Had The World To Give > Playin > Around jam. The Playin' goes way off into Space, and the Shakedown gets quite funky, but in both cases it's a kind and gentle sort of thing. The whole set is quite unique, like no other: Eric fittingly calls it "Tasteful, Exquisite Jamming".
For me, 12/30/78 has always been lost in the shadow of the following night's monster show -- I'm glad OutOfIraq recommended it as a replacement for the Winterland shows that have been commercially released. It deserves love on its own. The first set is interesting. The Bobby songs are great (Looks Like Rain and Minglewood stand out for me) and the Jerry songs are quite sweetly jammed (it's a Jed for Jed-dislikers, and a punchy Stagger Lee). The second set is really long and of high quality. The Miracle > Bertha > Good Lovin' starts off with a bang -- the Miracle part might be the best, which speaks to its quality more than any lack subsequently. The Scarlet > Fire followed by a lone Playin' are FAR longer than the Jerry and then Bobby song that "should" come next, and then a swinging Shakedown leads into Drums and then a long hunk of Hamza el-Din that flows through a Nubian tune and then a long, moving Olin Arageed. That flows into St Stephen -- Jerry hacked the intro, but the song blooms and then flows into NFA > GDTRFB. The harmonica work from Lee Oskar in Saturday Night is just icing on this tasty cake.

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

I get goosebumps just reading about these shows.
I CAN'T wait to hear them.
BOTH 11/20 and 12/30 are shows I have looked at in Deadbase over the YEARS, and drooled about!!! Especially the Jam>drums>Jack-A-Roe, always wondered what that sounded like, and in a few days I actually will!
woohoo!
Many, many, many thanks for this SteveSw!!

Ty so much for continuing this fantastic project.
>>Especially the Jam>drums>Jack-A-Roe
The show itself is beyond sublime , the cuts are harsh though , i will never be able to fathom what happened to the poor master that it is cut so many times. |

| This is a new version of 11-20 that I don't believe has been seeded here before. There are still transitions between the sources that are relatively obvious, but Charlie has done his normal "we-don't-appreciate-this-enough" great job to make them as painless as possible, and he says he may do more work on this show to fix the one remaining cut. |

Hungry, grumpy, sure, you got it... This is just what the new age doctor kinda guru-y guy ordered, and a nice smoked salmon with lemon and... OK, I'm hungry... Another bang up job, SteveSW. 11/20 is phenomenal, as is that entire run. "World to Give" such a treat. Looking forward to 12/30, it has been under the radar, AFAIAC. Well, no further adieu, that's not right, but thanks all the same. Feelin' like a post-coma Jerry at the moment, sorry.
SteveSW, you've entered the online Grateful Dead musical extravagonzo of music and general good times for all Hall of Fame!!! You da man, ya got my stuff, I want it and I want it now! don't run out, please... I need it. It's not like I *have* to have it or anything. I could quit, if I really wanted to, but I don't. It's medical, I need it for my mental hygiene and to make sure my brain still works... sorta. OK, that's enough. I'm going to quit typing right... now! But thanks again (I'd be remiss if I didn't thank you immensely). OK, right... now! SteveSW rocks! (Now!) |

SteveSw: Thank you!!!
Would anybody happen to know where/when we will be able to get our hands on the most recent Miller upgrade to the 11/20 show?
Another question: Does anybody know what's going on over at the Workingman's Tracker? It's been offline for a day or two now and I'm beginning to grow a little concerned. |

Steve, I have been remiss in not thanking you previously for all this hard work and wonderful commentary on the book and song selections. After reading your reviews and downloading the bt's, I recently bought the book and have started going through it. The book is a bit of an odd read, but insightful to a fairly new deadhead. I an going to start listening to the shows in order in the next day or so. I jumped ahead and am near the end of the Scarlet/Fire set. It is just awesome to hear the many versions in chronological order.
Again, thanks for doing this. I hope Eric is paying you a commission. |

That's wonderful news, Charlie. What a unique and sweet show. I will make sure your upgrade makes it here, as soon as I see it.
-----
The ISP that hosts Workingman's Tracker decided to change the IP network address of the site, as a kind of Fall Surprise for everyone. You can find it here, now:
http://38.106.100.27/tracker/index.php
That's just a temporary name. In the fullness of time, I believe the name will be
http://gdvault.com/tracker/index.php
But anyway, Workingman's Tracker is up and recovering from the shock.
Those of you who like the Grateful Dead but don't know what Workingman's Tracker is should go to that first address and join. It's a great little community of people who are committed to sharing the music.

No commissions, 560sdl! I do it all for love ;) I'm glad you like the book. |
