In the Taper's Compendium, Michael Getz calls 10/27/79 "a legendary show, the one referred to when someone says 'Let's put on Cape Cod.'" Michael tells us that, for whatever reason, the crowd that night contained every diehard fanatical Deadhead on the East Coast. What is true is that the playing is very clean and direct, very high quality, and that the energy in the show is pretty carefully controlled 'til it finally explodes in the monster Other One in the second set. The first set is strong and solid, constantly good, and well worth listening hard to for the more or less constant if subtle innovations that happen in nearly each song. The second set opens in chaos -- Bobby seems to forget that Donna is gone and the little "dancin', dancin', dancin' in the streets" thing doesn't happen at the beginning anymore. But Brent covers, and the arrangement works great: it's a powerful Dancin', one that gives lie to the whole "Disco Dancin'" prejudice. Eric calls the transition from Dancin into Franklin's a "Gotterhooverung" (the vacume cleaner of the gods), and of course he's smack on: the transition is complete and rich, and the Franklin's that comes out of it is (in Eric's opinion) one of the great HS-less versions. Franklin's teases a long into-Drums jam and then goes into a great He's Gone. He's Gone teases a long into-Drums jam that visits Caution in an interesting way, then Phil smacks us with one of the great all-time Other One intros. There is so much Phil energy in this version that when you *finally* get to Drums, you're happy that the rest of the show kind of eases away with reasonable but unexceptional post-drums playing.
12/01 from a small, beautiful, and excellent-sounding venue in Pittsburgh is another excellent show. The energy here is very high. The first set is almost excellent throughout -- I agree with the Compendium reviewer, Bobby's slide work in Minglewood is a bit much. But there's great energy in the cowboy tunes, the Sugaree is wired, and the Althea > Music Never Stopped is brilliant. Eric's commentary picks up in the second set. The China > Rider continues the great rockin' energy from the first set. Eric misses Donna during Looks Like Rain -- he calls it the anti-Playin', in the sense that much as he would always wish Donna was not singing during Playin', he could never hear a post-Donna Looks Like Rain without experiencing her absence. The He's Gone is unusually mellow and sweet, and Brent shines in it. But the rock energy of the show cannot be denied, so things burst into a Gloria jam with dashes of Caution, and then the first "C.C. Rider" which Eric thinks the band didn't know it was playing even after the song started. The NFA > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia profits by the show's energy -- the NFA is well-jammed at the beginning, the Black Peter is well-sung and gathers enough energy that the transition into the rousing Sugar Magnolia that closes things off.
12/28 could easily be the best show from the New Year's run in Oakland. It opens with what Eric calls an "all-time" Sugaree, and then builds. The Mama Tried is quite imaginative (the guitar work is different than usual), but the strength here is on Jerry's side: the Row Jimmy and the High Time are almost as good as the Sugaree. The set closes with another excellent 1979 Music Never Stopped: good times all around. The energy is retrieved and focused in the Alabama > Greatest that opens the second set, and then explodes into what Eric calls a "phenomenal" Terrapin > Playin. Jerry is really on in Terrapin, just like in Sugaree and Row Jimmy and High Time: both his playing and his singing are sensitive and interesting. The Playin really profits from Brent's synth work and excellent Bobby slide work. After drums is also great. Every song has what Eric calls "that little bit more" that distinguishes it from normal versions, and every transition has that thing when the first song builds into the next (as opposed to those pauses when the band seems to gather itself before continuing).
All three of these shows are great examples of Brent's contributions, both as an instrumentalist playing off against Jerry and Bobby and as a great tenor. A good slice o' history here.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

I look forward to this one more than any of the others. Love that new Brent energy. This:
"Gotterhooverung" (the vacume cleaner of the gods)
Has *got* to refer to coke energy, otherwise, it would literally be translated as "sucks like God's own vacuum cleaner"... and WE KNOW that's not the case! Anyway, this came just in time. I'm down to my last few GB on my "new" (about a month or so) drive, and had only one slow torrent filling it. SteveSW, this is a GREAT TREASURE you're providing, and I will keep these ones close as the years go by. Thank you (and Eric) very much!!! Party on, Garth!
This is REALLY great! Do yourself a favor and get this now! |

| Fall tour of '79 the (Grateful) Dead played some blistering shows. My advice is to grab all of 'em and then sort it out afterwards. Thanks, Steve. |

Yes Indeed Steve, I'm looking forward to hearing these ones, and thanks again for your dedication to this project.
And I've got to say that it's well worth hearing Donna sing on Playin' in order to hear her on Looks Like Rain. Come back Donna, all is forgiven! |

I simply love thes shows and bravo with the fine introductions. I somehow in my travels had missed the Seatlle show from the previous post and I must say it truely one of the better first sets I have head in a while. I have not clicked on the link to you're impending book but I must say I think the reviews are stellar. Thanks for the music. The Grateful Dead..Goes To show You don't Ever Know, what path this great band can lead you down. Good luck and good night

badbob, your recommendation is second to none (unless you have a better copy of that show in your back pocket of course, as you often do). but youall who cruise through here should take bob's advice. there were fewer great shows in 1978 than 1977, and there might have also been fewer great shows in 1979 than 1978, but when the 1979 were great they were animated by brent and still focused relative to jerry and phil. and so they were also great!
crimson, it is not my impending book, it is a ten-year-old book that i'm following because it gives structure and authority. i don't feel up to creating either of those without a prop!
and thank you for the rest of you, and your energy in following on!

Two Black Peters and A High Time, MUST have all three!!!
I'm in love with the tragic Jerry...
Comes A Time when it all rolls into one...
It was later than I thought, ain't got time to call my soul a critic (no!), and it looks like the old man's gettin' old, cuz He's Gone (and the bells were not for me...)
So I'll listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul, and if I knew the way, I would take you home...
Goin' where the chilly winds don't blow...
I'm gonna get up in the morning, and go...
Hello, baby, I'm gone, goodbye! I had the mark, just as plain as day, that could not be denied...
One pain of glass in the window... I used a little too much force... I've just got to cut loose, before it gets too late...
Lyin' in pain...
Run me out in the cold rain and snow...
I guess it doesn't MATTER anyway!
I set out runnin', but I take my time... Can't let go and you can't hold on. Can't go back and you can't stand still.
If the thunder don't get ya, then the lightning WILL!
Goodnight. |

| I've written it here several times when a part time dead head says, "make me whatever you feel like" 12-28-79 is the show I pick. FLAWLESS, the trickle into UJB gives me goosebumps every time! |

| great stuff! thanks for all this. Does anyone know if the weird speed fluctuations during the first couple minutes of "Dancin" are on the master? Does a speed-corrected version circulate? |
