Here's another Garcia source, this a performance with Reconstruction. Reconstruction was formed by John Kahn so he'd have folks to play with when Jerry was busy with the Grateful Dead. The original guitarist was Jerry Miller (the Moby Grape guitarist). But Jerry had always wanted to play in a jazz band, so he joined in 1979. They played together from January to September of 1979; all their shows were in California or Colorado. Merl Saunders is the keyboard player: the band also has a trombone (Ed Neumeister) and a tenor sax (Ron Stallings). There are ten songs in this source from June 22, and then seven other "filler" tracks from teh JGB in other years. So it goes. The music has a very funky sound, lots of percussive effects in the rhythm, quite jaunty.
This is Rob Hodil's selection of a Reconstruction show for the project. The centerpiece of this show is the incredibly funky and dancified Long Train Running. Dear Prudence sounds a lot better with horns, I think. Eric also recommends the opening Jam #3, Telling My Friends, and Stuggling Man. It's another one of those shows where you pick pretty much any of these songs and go on.
Enjoy.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

This looks great! YES! More Reconstruction, please... anyone? John Kahn is too often overlooked. He wasn't "just a bass player". he was an arranger, an AWESOME bass player (electric AND acoustic, which is no mean feat), a support and sounding board for Jerry, and a GREAT FRIEND of Jerry's, and ultimately, OURS! I've always loved "Compliments", it was the first JGB cassette I ever had, and the arrangements and the songs chosen (John Kahn brought a bunch to Jerry, and then Jerry chose from what John brought to him) are ALL very tasty, funky, pretty, beautiful and the album as a whole has a kinda strange, melancholy vibe (Russian Lullaby, Let It Rock, Mississippi Moon, He Ain't Give You None, Turn On The Bright Lights, Midnight Town...). John Kahn is GREAT. Too bad John didn't get a chance to write HIS memoirs!!! I'm tellin' ya, I bet it'd be my favorite book on Jerry Garcia!!! John was a stright shooter and a very well rounded musician. He was also one of Jerry's longest lassting and closest frineds. He used to sneak over to Kahn's house after he was married to (Black, hey I'm on Mountain Girl's side) Deborah, so he could hang out, get high, and have someone to talk to. RECONSTRUCTION, baby! Yeah! I think Kahn helped write one of my favorite Jerry tunes, also: Love In The Afternoon (is that right?).
Thanks SteveSW, ANOTHER home run! |
