Dead To The Core Project
Noteworthy Playin' In The Bands (A Collection)

This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Playin In The Band
performed by the Grateful Dead. It is closely based on a list put
together by Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead To The Core:
An Almanac of the Grateful Dead_. When he selected versions that have
since been released commercially, I took several paths. If the version
Eric recommended is available as an AUD, I have included it. If not, I
cast around for nearby shows with similar Playin's -- if I could find
one, I threw that in. Otherwise, I just skipped the selection. This
has worked out well -- I think his spirit is alive in these choices.

The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. When Playin' was split, I always included the
songs within the split. When it was solo, or around the edges of the
Playin' sandwiches, I leaned towards chopping off non-Playin' music,
but I left jams where the transitions seemed interesting. I built
these Playin's by first joining tracks with "shntool join". Often I
could then retrack and add fades on the edges, but sometimes I had to
also remove the odd mess between drums and space: I used Wavelab for
all that. I fixed up the resulting tracks using shntool, and then I
compressed the files using "flac --best". I used shntool version
3.0.2, flac version 1.2.1, and Wavelab version 6.

OutofIraq, I too think Bobby sometimes sang PITB with Jerry in mind. I'll never forget the 10/8/83 version, which followed on the heels of a set 2 Day Job opener! There were moments in the first set when Jerry veered wildly from not playing at all to dominating in an in-your-face manner. For me the second set seemed to be about working through conflict. I still retain a vivid image from the PITB jam of Phil and Bobby pointing their guitars in parallel at Jerry, who was pointing his at them. Phil and Bobby were watching Jerry closely, but he kept his head turned away from them. The two seemingly opposing sides were trading and merging furious leads that formed what seemed to me at the time to be the most amazing music I had ever heard. I don't know what was really going on in anyone's mind other than my own (and that one only barely!), but I think it's clear that PITB works lyrically as an in-the-moment remonstrance to one's band mates and invitation to transcend ego differences.

SteveSw, I do think PITB offers meaning well beyond the rock-band experience. As a complete lyric, I think it speaks at one level to any team experience, and at a different level to each of our experiences of life overall. Just as Shakespeare wrote that "All the world's a stage, / And all the men and women merely players", so I see the song using it's theme of musical transcendence (or even exploitation) of conflict and egocentric behavior within a band as a metaphor for human family and societal experiences.

And even though PITB, unlike Hunter songs like Tennessee Jed and Ramble On Rose, transcends the individual one-liners with a deeper overall vision, some of the couplets are spectacular. My favorite is

I can tell your future
Just look what's in your hand

Obviously it applies neatly to the musicians playing at that moment - Billy can see the drumstick and realize that he's a drummer and is likely to be one going forward. But I think it also can trigger interesting responses in any listener. For example, consider the various implications of and conclusions one might draw, especially in a heightened state of awareness, from attempting to connect the following items with one's future: hand of significant other, cigarette, joint, pager, wallet, comb, soft drink, beer, hot dog, etc.

I agree that Playing has a deeper meaning, beyond even the band itself. I would add that so does I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band) if you look at the lyrics to the song and remember where the Moodies were coming from at the time.

'74 should be the last year for best pitb
bonghitwillie 2013-01-08 00:25:52
i am kind of beyond the dead now. i only like 1968 and the free jazzy pitb jams. someone should put together just the jams between the vocal intro/outro to pitb from '72-'74. oh yeah, i like all dark stars up till 1975.
