Description7/4/81 - Grateful Dead
Manor Downs - Austin, Texas

Recording Info:
SBD -> Cassette Master -> Dat -> ZA2 -> SHN
(Transfered By Joe Samaritano)

Patch Notes:
(FOB) Nakamichi 700 -> Cassette Master -> Cassette -> Dat (Sony D8) ->
CD (Tascam CDRW700) -> EAC -> SHN (Transfered By Charlie Miller)
Patch provides Tenn Jed > Minglewood, China > Rider, Sugar Mags, Saturday Night

Notes:
-- I'm pretty sure that the SBD portion of the show is Cass Master -> Cass.
-- The AUD patch is an upgrade to the aud that currently circulates.
-- The Disc 2 -> Disc 3 transition is seemless.

81-07-04 finds the Dead at the top of their summer-1981 game, playing in Austin Texas on the fourth day of July. The most noteworthy thing about this show is that Bobby plays at a creative level he doesn't often get to within the context of teh Dead. Of course the band opens with Jack Straw. And of course Bobby flubs the line, singing a Minglewood-besotted "T for Texas, T fourth day of July". So much for pressure. But it's a hot rendition nonetheless, and opens a great show. It's followed by a weird Peggy-O sung in a nursery-rhyme or lullaby kind of rhythm, and then a Red Rooster in which Jerry's guitar work is smooth and slow and sweet. The China Cat > Rider is unusually fast at first, which works out well as the energy just fills the Rider until Bobby ongoing lyrical confusion infects Jerry as well. Eric especially likes the pre-drums jamming here, a long run of Stranger > Bird Song > Playin'. The Stranger finds Jerry in the center, with Brent and Bobby slipping and sliding around him. The unusual second-set Bird Song is an extremely excellent version. The compendium reviewer calls out Bobby's playing here, and notes how beautifully complete the core of the jam is, each player doing their own imaginative thing within what they call a "mind-blowing synthesis". The drummers rule the Playin', though Jerry surely stands up amongst the fury and plays fire between Brent and the drums. Bobby also plays really well here, especially in the time when it seems like the jam is done, and then things are reborn out of Jerry and Brent as a backdrop for the best Bobby has to offer. Bobby also plays wicked guitar in the post-drums Space. From there things close with fine renditions of classic songs (check out the "One More Fourth of July" line in the encore).

There's a very good audience recording of this show available on the LMA:

In the fall of 1981, the Dead took off on their second European tour of the year. There are several shows worth checking out: the 9-30 show from Scotland that opens the tour for instance, and the 10-19 show from Barcelona that closes it (which is available in a fine recent Miller SBD, SHNID 95761). Eric's selections for this tour are the 10-06 show from London and then the 10-16 show from the Milky Way hash bar in Amsterdam. They make for good contrasts, the 10-6 show an excellent example of what the band was up to in those times, and the 10-16 a weird and wonderful one-of-a-kind thing that might be a great target for one of those "if you could go back and see ten shows" wishes.

10-06 gets off to a great start with a Shakedown > Minglewood that starts loose and builds a lot of energy. Jerry follows with a starkly beautiful Roses. I'd also call out the Cumberland > Looks Like Rain > Might As Well that closes the first set, which is excellently played if you can get past the awkward transition at the second turn. After a fun preening "Man Smart", things get very weird. The vocals in High Time sound like they're flowing through a bit of slow glass. The jamming through Estimated and He's Gone and on into Drums is particularly strange, different from the way these songs are normally jammed -- given the evidence, I blame it all on Brent. After drums you get a once-in-a-lifetime Blues For Allah jam which Eric calls "Some of the most transportational music the Dead have ever played" which is certainly saying a lot. Bobby seems oblivious to all that when he picks first Sugar Mag and then Good Lovin' to play in through here, though Jerry's Stella Blue still rises to the sublime level of the jam. A show well worth having and hearing.

The band played at a hash bar on October 15 and 16 because two shows were cancelled down in the south of France. The show from the 16th is the more famous: it was Bobby's birthday, and there are a number of unusual things that go on. The show opens with an acoustic set: the Bird Song, the Ain't No Lie, and the Ripple all sound good to my ears (if you like these, you should definitely grab the 10-11 AUD). The electric music has a garage-band feel, everything is very loose and fun. That's what comes from borrowed instruments I guess. Highlights are the Hully Gully and the Gloria, the Lovelight revival, and the well-jammed Playin'. What I notice is how some of these songs sound a lot more like early-era Dead than like what they'd become in the late 80s and 90s, less formal and structured and professional, more playful and genuine. This really is a unique show.

There are several very good audience recordings from the European tour that have been made available to us by our friends from the older side of the pond (10-11 and 10-15 are only available as AUDs):

This project is a music adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

The 1981 New Year's Eve show was one of the great shows. I'm not sure why Eric didn't mention it.

steve - love it again - just wonderin' - reason why u picked 21802 over 30151?

thanx for all the great music & discussion

NYE 81 *is* a fantastic show. . .dare I say even the best NYE of the 80's? "Look at all these fuckin' balloons", indeed.

Steve, Thank you! I have the Miller 1981.10.19 listed as 95781 and not 95761... Is that my mishap or is there another recent Miller that I've missed???
SteveSw 2008-11-25 17:15:32
jerrygar1, I included 21802 for two reasons. First, when I listened to it blind yesterday, I picked it as the better-sounding source (though I can also hear why 30151 is an upgrade). Second, 30151 is available as a live torrent right now, so I figured it was available. You can get it here:

http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=509110

but I was probably thinking too much -- it's simpler to just go along with other people's ears, especially people with professional ears.

p74trick, that was just a typo, sorry.

This is, in my opinion, another great late 81 AUD:

There is video of the Milky Way show in circulation. The bar was so crowded that a couple of Heads are sitting underneath Brent's piano.

I have never heard the Scotland show. Is there a recording in circulation?

The Austin show is a fun one and one of my first tapes. The boys are on but there is nothing too serious happening. With some great playing and goofy lyrical mistakes, it makes for interesting listening especially if you are like me and tend to catch botched lyrics. 12 years later, botched lyrics were a sign of decay while here it is just an open field and lots of sun.
