Notes:
first ~34sec of To Lay Me Down patched with AUDMC > CD > EAC > SHN (Thanks Stephen Kinsch!)
first few notes of Reuben & Cherise cut - I smoothed it out with a fade.
There are a few tape warbles, presumably from the master.
I crossfaded many of the transitions between tracks, due to cuts in the crowd noise.
I also shifted the pitch of the SBD portion of the show down one semitone to match the AUD.
All editing/patching done with SoundForge 4.5.
All tracks verified and corrected with shntool.
Any questions or comments, please let me know.
Patrick Murphy

Mastering Notes
-- Edited, mastered and downsampled to 16/44.1 on the GEMS Edit Station.
-- Tape was paused between several songs.
-- d2t0{3,4} - Tape pause between "Don't Let Go" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" cross-faded.
Notes
-- No music is lost due to the numerous tape pauses; however, the lead in is very short on a number of them.
-- d1t01 - Output levels are very unstable during the opening of "How Sweet It Is"; taper is able to quickly adjust to optimum levels.
-- d2t0{3,4} - Cross-fading of the tape pause - between "Don't Let Go" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" - may give the impression of a direct transition between the songs. The cross-fade was applied for aesthetics, as the tape pause was very abrupt, and there was actually a musical break.

As near as I can make out from Rob Hodil's comments in Appendix B of _Dead To The Core_ (maybe one of you knows more about this), Jerry scheduled a series of solo dates across the country in the spring of 1982. After playing the first of those shows on April 10 in Passiac, New Jersey, he decided that he most definitely did not like playing alone, he got in touch with John Kahn, and the rest of the shows featured Jerry and John. The upshot is, these April 10 shows are the only solo Jerry I know of. They're not only unique, they're also darn good. It's hard for me to pick out highlights here. For the early show, I'm a sucker for Deep Elem Blues and Ripple, and these are good. Rob picks out Gomorrah, Valerie, Dire Wolf, Reuben and Cherise, and I've Been All Around This World. It's mostly the same songs in the late show-- the Sing Me Back Home is sweet here. Imagine having just Jerry for the evening! It must've been something.
When you think of Magic Mountain, you might think of the Thomas Mann novel, or the Six Flags amusement park in southern California. But the Magic Mountain where Jerry played in June of 1982 is in South Fallsburg, NY, about 80 miles northwest of New York City, just south of Catskill State Park. This is a nice audience recording of a very good show. Rob picks it for the excellent Don't Let Go jam in the second set. There's a lot of energy in the Let It Rock > Deal combo that closes the first set, and the ballads here are quite nice. We have this in a fine MOTB transfer of a John Steinthal audience recording.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Awesome torrent!!!!!! Very essential. What is also funny about the solo show, it is an off-night during Dead tour. Music Mountain, one of the best ever, with BK on the throne to boot. Jerry talks about the solo show some in this great interview:
http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/jerry-garcia-concert/20050252-3264.html
I think they have the date wrong on that interview as the interviewer talks of Nassau shows which were after the solo performance. |

| I don't remember the mud, but I do remember the parking lot fiasco at the end of the show, the ambulances, the rumors of someone dying at the show. The show was amazing, but the vibe after was disconcerting to say the least-- |

Gosh, I feel like an idiot. I was thinking in setlist instead of English, and I couldn't figure out what mud stood for. That's depressing.
Thanks for the music. |

thanks again SteveSW. not sure if you are still checking _all_ of the comments but I hope so. I am so far behind on this project as to be ridiculous, but all good things in all good time. I host all of the ones I can fit on my laptop when I do make it out of the woods once in a while.
I have always called that 6.16.82 JGB show "Magic Mountain" as well. I was corrected on that long ago, but this stuff is truly Magic, so the name stays whenever I have to label yet another tape or disc of this show. Been hoping for a cutting-edge digital version for a long time. Once I copy it to a couple three hard drives and give it away yet more times, I'll have it forever. THANK YOU! |
