"Is that really a 20+ minute Franklins?"

I think there was some dead air or tuning considered to be part of the track. Yes, it is a long version in and of itself (17-18 minutes, IIRC), just not the length of the entire track.

RE: "EPIC!!

Agreed. I firmly believe the people who *still* think GBrent was "overrated", just don't get the fact (or refuse to face the fact) that the Dead were a *different* band going into the '80s, harder edged and more bluesy and rock 'n' roll than the '70s Keith & Donna version of the band... and in *that* context, *Brent was the PERFECT fit!*.
Phil, for one, was pushing for the GD to do more "hard rockin'" stuff (he claims he wrote "Passenger" for that very reason, so the Dead could "rock out" on it). Brent fit the '80s band like a hand in glove... Look people, the '70s (AND the '60s) were OVER by 1980!!! The band was *NOT* going to go backwards, they had *done* jazz (and I LOVED that, personally, still do!!!), and they had *done* psychedelia (and that is some of the greatest music ever played, Live/Dead is a cultural signpost of what the youth of America , and plenty of others, were up to in the late '60s!!!), so... ONWARD!!! The Dead were going in a more "mainstream rock and roll" direction, but, of course, they were still waaay more "Grateful Dead" than they were ever "mainstream" anything, right? I say people who were anti-Brent, were to some extent anti-'80s-Grateful Dead, because, let's face it, for the kind of music they were playing, Brent supplied EVERYTHING they needed: great harmony vocals and good vocal and instrumental and an AUTHENTIC *blues/rock* flavor that was not only were the Dead were at at the time, but many rock 'n' rollers of the past leads, Hammond B-3 (HALLELUJAH!!!), *synthesizer*, electric piano, good leads vocally and instrumentally, and, let's face it, not only the GD, but the mass of people who were into the great music of the '60s and '70s were moving in the direction of blues/rock in the '80s, proven by who was popular at the time... Remember Stevie Ray Vaughan? The big Doors and Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix revivals that continued to grow in the '80s and are still HUGE... This *is* the direction most of us went in, and there was *no going back * to the '70s GD or "60s GD, NO MATTER WHO MUCH WE WOULD HAVE ALL LOVED THAT!!! PigPen was undoubtedly great, but he had flaws... um, the vocals to "Hey Jude", anyone? Puh-lease, that was the biggest disaster I've ever heard ANY version of the Grateful Dead involved in, and I could name a few other atrocious Pig vocal performances... Pig was GREAT and ESSENTIAL to EARLY GD, but, I think for the '80s GD, such as they were, Brent's mix of skills on a variety of keyboards, his writing skills and vocal skills made him the best keyboardist/vocalist/band member, pound-for-pound, than ANY other Dead keyboardist. So... stop bashing Brent! : ) OK...

Thanks for this! Brent gave the band a kick in the ass when they truly needed, and wanted, it! Cheers.

Tossed,
Salad.

I for one really enjoyed Brent and miss him. The first Sugar Magnolia rivals the Hey Jude for vocal futility!

Thanx!
