General Notes:

This show was plagued by technical issues in the first set, causing
the band to take a break mid-set, only to come back to the stage and
breakout Keep On Growing. Stagger Lee and Comes A Time enjoy 3 and 5
year resurrections respectively. Great second set Dew opener. Jerry
is low in the mix for most of the show (something slighly enhanced by
the matrix, but not much), and I assume this had to do with the technical
issues which by the next night seemed to be fully resolved.

Both SBD sources were synched to the AUD. Set 1 SBD through Peggy-O
was pitched up between 2 and 17 cents, and from Bucket until the end
of the set the SBD was pitched down between 4 and 14 cents. Set 2 SBD
was pitched up around 12 cents, and the McCue AUD was used to patch
crowd/tuning for the Sgt Pepper's 20th anniversary opening reference,
s1t07 (mid 1st set break), the tuning for set 2 opener, and a little
crowd at the very end to enhance the fadeout. No EQ was applied, and
very spare Waves L2 limiting was employed to the matrix mix.

Thanks to Randy Carman for the SBD source. Thanks to Jim and Doug Oade
for recording the wonderful AUD, Doug for transferring it, and Darrin Sacks
for tracking it. Thanks to Mark McCue and crew for taping the AUD used to
patch, and Alex Ford for transferring and seeding it.

Enjoy!

____________________________
General Notes:

This is my favorite show from this run, as evident in the double
encore which included one of only 9 She Belongs To Me in 1985 (only
other version was in 1966). Minglewood through Dupree's is sick,
an epic China->Rider for the era, and the transition into Gimme Some
Lovin' is quintessential.

Both SBD sources were synched to the AUD. Set 1 SBD was pitched up
on average of 50 cents, and set 2 SBD was pitched up around 2 cents,
except the 2nd encore where I synched the AUD to the SBD because of
a 700 millesecond dropout in the AUD @ 0:42. No EQ was applied, and
very spare Waves L2 limiting was employed to the matrix mix.

Thanks to Randy Griesman for the set 1 SBD source, and to David Gans
for the set 2 SBD editing (it really helped!) and to Joe Samaritano
for transferring David's work. Thanks to Jim and Doug Oade for
recording the wonderful AUD, Doug for transferring it, and Darrin Sacks
for tracking it.

____________________________
General Notes:

The big surprise at this show is the Cryptical resurrection,
not played since 9-28-72, however, the last full Cryptical
which sandwiches Other One (That's It For The Other One) was
played on 12-15-71. Walkin' Blues appears after a 3 year
hiatus. SBD mix is a little sketchy for the first few tunes
(no or liitle Jerry) which is compensated by more AUD in the
matrix mix.

No EQ was used, just a very light Waves L-2 to keep it contained.
I synched the AUD to the SBD, and since both sources are from
digital masters, the pitch/speed correction was consistent
throughout resulting in the AUD being pitched down around 1 cent.

Thanks to Charlie Miller for the SBD source. Thanks to Jim and
Doug Oade for recording the wonderful AUD, Doug for transferring it,
and Darrin Sacks for tracking it.

Enjoy!

Eric believes that this 20th-anniversary run at the Greek in Berkeley is the best run of 1985, a year he dearly loves. I believe that there are several runs from the Bay Area over the years that seem better in the minds of the community than on tape. Yet these are good shows, and if they're not 70's good at least they're exemplary of the best the band could come up with that summer. Certainly the crowd was jazzed. That's why I've decided to include the Sick Bits matrices of this show instead of the soundboards: it's a show where the crowd reaction definitely improves the listening experience. And of course Chris's matrices are upper exchelon stuff. So, there you go.

Eric thinks the first set of 6/14 was the best first set of the run. The opening Dancin' was surely a treat for the fans, and it was very well played, as was the West LA Fadeaway that followed. Brent is having a high time with his samples here: check out the orchestra sounds during the opening tuning, and the sounds of "Bobby Bobby" with smooching accompaniment. Brent shines in C.C. Rider, the band gets a dancin' groove going, and then pffffft the air goes out of things and the PA shuts off for 20 minutes. The Keep On Growing is more novelty and fun than deep music, but the Stagger Lee was sweet and the Let It Grow was well-jammed. The second set starts with more sample nonsense and flows in to a fabulous run of music: a powerful Morning Dew, a great great Playin' with excellent interesting jamming, and then a dreamlike China Doll that goes into Drums. Things stagger out of Space into a raggedy Truckin' that focuses into a rollickin' Smokestack and then a sweet and very welcome Comes a Time. As a combination of an unexpected playlist and really excellent playing, this is a hard show to beat.

And, surprise, 6/15 does not beat it. The first set is competent but not excellent. It gets better as it goes along: to my ears, surprisingly, the Uncle > Big River > Might As Well that closes the first set is probably the strongest music here. Eric enthuses over the second set China Cat > Rider and Lost Sailor > Saint. To my ears there is some great jamming in the transitions in both places, but I would not go so far as Eric goes and call these "best ever" versions. Solid.... The compendium reviewer thinks that the Wheel > Gimme' Some Lovin out of Space is the best part of the show. I'm with him to some extent: it is an excellent second half of the second set as such things go. All and all, if you were there, you would have gone home happy.

Eric likes the second set of 6/16 more than the first. The "Midnight Hour" opener is OK, but it speaks loudly of the difference between Pigpen and Bobby. But parts of this set have high energy -- Big River and Big Railroad Blues both rock, and Jed and Looks Like Rain both have soul. Whatever, the second set really shines: a fabulous Scarlet > Fire marred only by Jerry's weak vocals: check out the richness of the harmonies and the glass-like fluidity of the playing, Bobby's intriguing rhythms, Jerry's excellent lead, Brent's speckled lightning. The "weak vocals" follow us into a surprising "Cryptical > Other One > Cryptical" that is more fun in the "WOW" way than well-sung or well-played. The jamming in the Other One is short, but it is very unusual in its ideas and structure: Eric points to Garcia alternating between rhythm and lead towards the end of both jams as one example. The Drums > Space is one to actually listen to (I know you're fast-forwarding out there!) -- a rich world-music sort of Drums, and then one of the early jungle Spaces that has got everyone making Bird Music and the like. Again this flows into a great closing sub-set: a loose rockin' Goin' Down The Road, a tight Miracle, and then a bouncy Lovelight that sends us into the Brokedown closer.

We are lucky in having superlative Oade recordings of these shows available at the LMA. These are some of the best Oade recordings ever, which is saying a lot. Many peole would argue that these are better recordings than any of the SBDs. They sure do catch the spirit and the musical quality of the run. These are the sorts of AUDs you use to try to convert a SBD guy....

You should go grab these if you can.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Thanks for these matrixes. I have not replaced my tapes of these shows for the past 30 years so now seems to be a great time to do so. 1985 in particular was an energetic year, as was most the 80s imho. Today, '85's energy and surprises now seem to me better as memories than as cds. However, in the 80s I certainly did not have access to such crystal clear 68-74 shows that the Bus and others so kindly share. The crisp, current sound of auds from the most recent Dead shows in the 1980s compared favorably the wonderful but muddier sounding xth generation pre-retirement tapes I had. Those great, lengthy Eyes of 74 with hiss did not crush the speedy one I had just seen and was listening to on a fine 1st gen aud.

Every now and then a sbd like 5-09-77 came in the mail and made the past seem inexhaustably full of potential. From today's vantage point, I think I was the better for it; enjoying the moment without the crippling realization that the inventiveness and improvisation of the past would appear only rarely at Hampton, RFK, MSG, Philly et al. I can see why older heads eventually lost that gleeful sense of high expectations that I had and stopped attending every show, travelling, or even attending at all. I felt something of the same by '94-95, "gotta go" mixed with a touch of reluctance.

Anyways, glad to have been there, glad to get these now. Cheers

All if the Sick Bit's are great. But they growing..The earlier ones are good, but as they progress amd get better as he goes along (as you might think for a master) This run, at home, in a prime smokin year of 85, is dare I say...epic. This mix is soooo sweet. The SB skill set is at a very high level one these. Get them all listen to them compared to your boards, your kickin' audiences, then pop these puppies in...close your eyes and listen to this one. You are there. IMO these are the best. Kudos to all those involved with Sick Bits

I agree regarding the Sick Bits getting better as time goes on (and I think the people who create those have admitted as much at certain points), and I also agree that some of the Oade's from '85 stand up to any soundboards from any era ever! Just incredible. Whatever equipment they were using was the stuff! I also agree that some runs were perhaps more special if one was there, and the tapes don't reflect the "spirit" of the show... though Oade's come closest in that regard. In retrospect, i wish I'd made more effort to see shows at the Greek Theater and, especially, shows at the Keystones. I was intimidated by having to navigate traffic and city parking and whatnot. Wish I'd either taken more chances or had hookups with more experienced travellers! However, looking back, I was pretty lucky/blessed in attending the shows I did. I have a high ratio of great shows to mediocre ones, and that is borne out by the comments of people who saw the shows I did in NorCal, and the tapes, also. Cal Expo was pretty kickin', and trippy shows at Boreal and Grass Valley, and some great shows in Oakland all during the '80s...

Anyway, great to hear these are some primo Oades! I have also felt that the recordings of some shows don't bear out the greatness of some shows, but Frost shows were almost always really good, at least. Anyway, great stuff, thanks!!!

Is anyone else having a problem with LMA? It stops after every song for me, for about the past week or so.
SteveSw 2009-01-21 01:39:01
lanewbie2003, i have not been having similar problems. and i deal with the lma regularly. it might be on your side. or it might be a lesson in patience. i am sorry you are having these problems.

we have a bunch of "Noteworthy" collections coming up. that may slow me down. so it goes.

"Is anyone else having a problem with LMA? It stops after every song for me, for about the past week or so."

me too
lanewbie2003 2009-01-21 23:34:24
Well, glad to see I'm not alone but sorry you are having this problem too hseamons.

On the dashboard that you click on to play the shows, (the streaming one), the song length used to be in red when things were working; now it is in blue and it is not working. I think LMA may have made a software mod that isn't compatible with everyone.

I use Firefox; what do you use hseamons? I wonder if that may be why. What do you use, Steve?
hseamons 2009-01-23 02:40:13
Firefox. I've had other problems with sites not working well with Firefox, so that could very well be the culprit. Man, maybe I should try some Safari on that player.
