DescriptionGrateful Dead
Dead To The Core Project
Noteworthy Aiko Aikos (A Collection)

This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Aiko Aiko performed by
the Grateful Dead. It appears to be quite difficult to say much about
exactly where the song comes from. New Orleans "obviously", but then
there are claims that it was actually a Haitian folk song dating back
into the early parts of the 20th century. A song called "Jock-A-Mo"
was written by James Crawford in New Orleans -- it sounds remarkably
like Aiko Aiko. The Dixie Cups, a singing group consisting of two
sisters and their cousin, first recorded it as Aiko Aiko: their
version went to #20 on the charts. The song is a story of two "tribes"
of Mardi Gras Indians on parade: they collide on the parade route, and
boy golly do the threats and boasts flow thick.

The lyrics actually go "Hey now, hey now, Aiko! Aiko! an de'. Jackomo
fe no a na nae', Jackomo fe na ne'." The phrase "Aiko Aiko" is said to
be derived from the languages of Gambia: in those languages, Ago!
means "listen!" or "attention!". My ear tells me that the Grateful
Dead often sang it "Aiko Aiko all day", but, they were not known to be
particularly careful in the lyric way.

The collection is closely based on a list put together by Eric Wybenga
and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An Almanac of the
Grateful Dead_. Eric picked mostly later versions of Aiko Aiko (the
band first played it in 1977), so with one exception (80-09-02) we can
offer SBD versions of the songs here. Both '86 versions in this
collection are played with the Neville Brothers. Eric suggests a Sept
10, 1991 version of Aiko with Branford that I do not believe actually
happened in this time-line, I have replaced it with a 10-27-91 version
of Aiko with Carlos Santana and Gary Duncan.

The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. Most of these Aiko Aikos are standalone. I
found echos of the Aikos to come in the Drums or Space that preceeded
them, so I sometimes left those attached to the song. When I could not
split the Aiko from its neighbors, I included a larger jam. And of
course I had to leave Woman Smarter in there (the difference? it's up
two steps in key...). I decoded the wav's with flac or shorten as
appropriate to the source, joined the wav's with shntool, edited them
(in the edges and fades way) with Wavelab, fixed the bad headers with
shntool, and then compressed things with flac. I used flac v1.2.1,
shorten v3.6.0, shntool v3.0.2, ane Wavelab V6.

Aiko Aiko, eh? My first thought was along the lines of "Why would we have an Aiko Aiko collection, but not a Weather Report Suite collection???" But then I remembered that it is after all Eric's book, and I took this as a little window into his Deadhead soul. He liked to dance to Aiko Aiko. He shared his favorites with us. Nothin' wrong with that....

Listening closely to these Aikos, you learn that the song has had many moods. The Aiko from 80-09-02 moves at big-hangover-on-a-very-hot-day sort of pace, the crowd claps along to the beat, things flow smoothly into Morning Dew, it's a great space and a nice jam. The smokey smooth space from 82-08-10 is a perfect setting for the Aiko that flows out of it -- Aiko often came out of space that way back in the early 80's.

The two 1985 Aikos are both rockin' openers to outstanding second sets -- 03-31 is pure rock I think, whereas 06-24 stretches out and jams a little better, and features the only time that Bobby ever sang a verse. The Neville Brothers sit in on both the 1986 versions. The 02-11 version flows out of a great funky-partying second-set-opening drums, and features the two bands each trying to play the song the way they're used to playing it (the Neville Bros in true New Orleans style, the Dead in a more Kansas City mood). The 12-30 version flows out of the mid-set drums and space, and is somewhat more successful I think. It's also a hoot to hear them flow from Aiko to Woman Smarter -- I had always thought the two songs were "the same", and now you hear that except for the key change, they mostly are.

The 90-03-18 set-opening version has us back in a smokey barroom listening to the blues, with Jerry on MIDI-horn and Brent on the Hammond: it's one of the best in the collection, IMHO. The Aiko-Mona from 91-10-27 profits from Bruce Hornsby's keyboard work, and then from the guitar work by Carlos Santana and Gary Duncan. This makes for a much more interesting set of interior jams during Aiko, and then for really astonishing guitar work in the Mona as one after the next of these guys picks things up and tosses them through the planets and on to the next player. Bruce and Phil have a nice little jam towards the end of the song as it flows into Drums.

Two 1995 Aikos? OK, I guess. The band changed around the song this year, adding a verse, fussing with the arrangement, stretching things out. The 03-18 version is quite dancable, Vince plays great organ, the drums are solid, and the elaborated call and response between Bobby and Jerry, and then between them and the band, ends up fashioning a crowd pearl. I'd call the 03-27 version happy and bouncy, again quite danceable, but not noteworthy in any other way.

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Steve, thanks for your continuing efforts with this series. I love Wybenga's book.

Everyone should buy this book. It's by no means comprehensive, but it's fascinating to realize that there are thousands of us across the world in all walks of life that could write a book just like it about this one band.

I actually kind of like Aiko. I came around when I heard the Thursday show of the Alpine 88 run, of all shows. The song's got a good heart and it's a dancer.

3/18/95 Aiko might be the most overrated track in the post-Mydland years.

do not forget Hey Pocky Way > Aiko from Shoreline 6-18-89 sm o kin' !

My pick, and it is even kisted here, is from 10-27-91. I was at the show and it smoked. Bill Graham dided the day before and thats why Carlos and Duncan showed up... seeing all those guitarists lined up across the stage was something else!

I"m really glad 9/2/80 is included here, even though it violates the "sbd only" rule. That show in Rochester NY was my all-time favorite for a number of reasons, and the segment you included here (space-Aiko-Dew-Sugar Mag) was a great part of the show. My first Aiko after hearing about this elusive ethereal enigma for a couple of years (my first show having been in early '79). I had had Aiko stickers stuck on me by strangers but had never heard the song live and was rewarded this day. Made a good friend at this show too - but who I have now lost touch with.
SteveSw 2009-02-01 17:51:22
I don't necessarily have a "sbd only rule". Whenever music is commercially released (like the second half of the second set of 80-09-02), my first alternative is to seed the song(s) as AUDs. My second alternative is to find a similar version from the same period of time.

There's a good Charlie Miller SBD of 80-09-02 that circulates in the community, you may be able to find it. I agree, the whole show seems very underrated.

As the band was playing the Iko opener from Rochester 11-8-85, many in the crowd were still slowly entering the War Memorial - we missed the first verses of Iko standing outside in the rain (I think some folks got antsy and busted an entrance door that wasn't opened - they might've gotten indoors, but it sure slowed the rest of us getting in :(

I also like the Iko from Colgate U, 1-4-77...one of my first 10 tapes back in '80!
frankie5 2009-02-02 05:33:52
let's not forget the Aiko-Aiko from Nassau Coliseum on 4-12-82. The whole show -- from the Aiko-opener to the Satisfaction-closer -- was incredible...really incredible. Check out the Deal to end the first set...or the Women Are->Sugaree, which is simply fantastic -- just might be the best Sugaree ever told. :)

Weir's rhythm work on the 8/10/82 Aiko (the contrapuntal triplets) was unique to that evening's version. A great example of having a brainstorm on stage and being able to implement it immediately.

Can anyone reseed this? Thanks in advance!
