Pitch and patch fix of shnid 7801
I adjusted this source -50 cents in Wavelab, using tones generated in CE 2000 as a tuning fork. I also patched in the bridge between Music Never Stopped and Might as Well in Cool Edit Pro using Phil Unger's audience recording (shnid 11880), downloaded from archive.org. All resulting SBEs and non-canonical headers were fixed using shntool.
CAVEATS: I don't know what artifacts are inherent in using Wavelab for pitch correction - I just do the best I can with the means at my disposal. I do know there is audible tape wow in the original source, and that it and any other pre-existing flaws will be exaggerated by stretching it out as I have done. That said, this still sounds quite good to my ears, and definitely preferable to the "Jerry and the Chipmunks" quality of a speeded up source.
Many thanks to Peter Braverman for the main source and to Phil Unger for his AUD patch source.

Here we are in the east-coast tour, late-85. Some nights, Jerry is playing better than he did in August/September, so, there are some interesting shows in this tour. Eric picks the show from Richmond, 11-01-85, as the first example, but it's a Dick's Picks so we can't seed it. So we drive on up I95 to Massachusetts....
I'm guessing Eric had a good time in Wooster on 11-4 and 11-5, which is why he's picked both of these shows. As regards 11-4, he writes "The first set's better than the first": been there, friend.... I think he's saying that the first set is better than the second, and I agree with him there: this is one of those shows where Jerry is dialed from the start and fades through things. So the Alabama, the West LA, the Big Railroad, the Might As Well: they're all quite remarkable. The China Cat > Rider that opened the second set was also fabulous, but it was very fast, and it's fabulousness did not need particular attention, and that loss becomes more apparant as the show plays out. The compendium reviewer thinks the Playin' > Terrapin is "best", but Eric and I agree that the energy is gone and these are energetic but cliched. Eric things the band came back in Truckin' and Sugar Mag: I think this is an example of a show that has a huge amount of "energy" and not a lot of "interest". Which makes it great in its way, eh?
11-05 is, IMHO, the best of these three shows Eric recommends. The first set has a perky Hell In a Bucket opener, an unusual and interesting "Kansas City" in the Bobby blues slot, and then a great Bird Song > Rain > Don't Ease ending. The second-set-opening Bill Walton Happy Birthday flows into a great Shakedown, afterwhich things slow down until the really good Supplication > Playin thing (imagine hoping for butter to rain down on you -- it's that smooth, and also that tasty (as if there's sugar and eggs involved). After a very good Drums > Space, the Tom's Thumb is the highlight, which says something....

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

There is actually a very good audience recording of 1985-11-01, too:

It's preferable to the SBD, actually. |

| Why can't you seed 11/1/85, I thought you could seed aud's not sbd's of official releases ? |
| SteveSw |
2009-02-04 22:59:10 |
I don't ever seed AUDs as complete shows, since it's so easy to just grab them from the LMA. I response to a previous request, I try to give links to the AUDs from around the time of the shows I'm seeding, so folks can give them a listen.
If you haven't downloaded from the LMA in a while, I recommend using Firefox and DownloadThemAll. I set up a default filter that will just grab the shn and flac files and leave the rest of the stuff up there, so, it's a matter of right-clicking on the download page, setting up my download directory, and clicking on "Start". It seems like my ISP is much more tolerant of HTTP downloads than of bittorrent downloads -- I get much better bandwidth using DownloadThemAll than with torrents.
So you can go to the LMA, given the AUD a listen via the streams, and then if you like it you can grab it. It's nice.

| I forgot that 11-01 was a Dick's Picks, I don't think of these mid-80s shows in terms of commercial release, for no good reason obviously. If it hadn't been mentioned in the comments of the other torrent, I would have just let it pass. But it didn't feel right to have the torrent sitting there with a "This is a commercial release!" comment in it, which is why I pulled it and fixed my mistake. |
