DescriptionGrateful Dead
Dead To The Core Project
Noteworthy Other Ones (A Collection)

This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Cryptical Envelopment
and The Other One by the Grateful Dead. The song was written by Jerry,
Bob, and Billy. Originally the song was a suite called "That's It For
The Other One", consisting of three parts: Cryptical Envelopment,
Quodlibit For Tenderfeet, and The Faster We Go The Rounder We Get. It
is quite common to call combinations of the last two parts "The Other
One". In the early years these songs were inseperable. The Other One
started stepping out on its own in 1971, and shortly thereafter (with
the exception of a few shows in 1985) Cryptical was gone.

The collection is closely based on a list put together by Eric Wybenga
and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An Almanac of the
Grateful Dead_. Eric picked versions of The Other One from throughout
the band's career. When he picked a version that was commercially
released, I used an AUD instead of a SBD if one was available to me,
or I selected a similar show if there was no AUD. For this list, Eric
had an unusually high hit-rate relative to the commercially released
oeuvre. I don't know if that means he just like popular Other One's,
or that great Other One's are quite likely to be commercially
released? Be that as it may, I had to make more substitutions than
usual.

The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. If The Other One is part of a larger jam, I
included the other songs, especially when they were songs that
commonly showed up next to The Other One. Since The Other One was
associated with Drums and filled with Space from the get-go, even
before there were ritualized Drums/Space's, I have been more willing
than usual to include Drums and Spaces that flowed into and out of
parts of The Other One in an organic/interesting way. To create these,
I decoded to wav's with flac or shorten as appropriate to the source,
joined the wav's with shntool, edited them (in the edges and fades
way) with Wavelab, fixed the bad headers Wavelab creates with shntool
strip, and then compressed things with flac. I used flac v1.2.1,
shorten v3.6.0, shntool v3.0.2, and Wavelab V6.

This is an interesting collection of Other Ones. It has the great virtue of being thorough -- Eric has included at least one visitor from all the interesting corners of the Other One universe. From my perspective, it is unbalanced in surprising ways: it has three versions from 1978, but only three from 1972-1977, for instance; and it has perhaps fewer from 1989-1991 than I might have expected. But Eric is in the enviable position of having written and then moved on, so we are left with Gratitude and no complaint whatsoever.

I had two interesting challenges when putting this together. First, Eric managed to pick the Other One from nearly all the great live concerns in the 69-71 time period, so I had a lot of substitutions to look for. I tried to not only find other "good" versions, but to find versions that were similar to the ones I had to leave out. So for example, I picked the Jan 3 '70 version as a replacement for 05-02-70, because they're both one of those where Jerry is kind of doing Phil's job and Phil is kind of doing Jerry's job. We'll see whether or not I was successful in that (or whether you can even see the correlations).

The other interesting challenge is figuring out exactly when an Other One begins and ends. From the get-go, That's It For The Other One was a common place for drums to pop up, and the great Other Ones had great space, so when we move into the fixed show structure and find drums and space around or alongside The Other One, does it belong as part of the song? Well, when Cryptical is wrapped around Drums and Space, of course so. Other than that, I listened to the Drums and Space and tried to determine whether I found them "Other One" like in terms of rhytmns and themes picked up and dropped during the festivities. Perhaps I did well in that, or perhaps I was finding bunny rabbits in the clouds. Absent this pattern-snatching, I mostly tried to keep things as short as I could without doing too much violence to the beginning and ends of jams. Again, we'll see how successful I was based on your feedback.

I think this collection is especially good at illustrating a few historical things. First, it demonstrates the path the band followed from 69-71 particularly well: I think those versions are all excellent, and all represent an interesting turn the band took on its way from here to there. Second, I think the individual versions presented in 72, 73, and 74 are all fine examples of what the song good be in those periods. Third, it does show that they boys still had it in '78, there is some find jamming in each those three version! And then last but not least, with the exception of the double dip in '85 (understandable from an oddity way), the remainder of the distribution reflects the high points in the remaining years in what I take to be an interesting way.

Let me know what you think, what was omited, and so on. And, enjoy....

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

I was going to put this up yesterday, but it started raining Miller, and I spent the evening running around in my skivvies, splashing my bare feet in the puddles of sound, face and hands raised to the downpour, just kind of lovin' and appreciating it all....

Sound like free spirit, Steve (I can't get away with that). Thx, Other One is a great song for this treatment. I think I'm gonna go through all htese collections and perhaps make some "super sets" from them using songs from the same time period to create some fine mix tapes. I have a difficult time listening to 20 versions of Scarlet > Fire in a row, however if I mix a great '78 Scar > Fire, a nice Other One (with Drums? with Space, even?), open the set with a great Help > Slip >Franklin, and end it with a killer Dew, NOW I've got something to dig into (no, no Me & My Uncle, sorry Bob... perhaps a Big River or a Mexicali Blues, though). OK, so... I've got no comment on your personal habits, but be careful, electricity and rain don't mix! 'Course if you like dancing on the edge, it might be thrilling in a sort of death wish/life force kinda way. (Will I survive? What a rush!) OK, listening to a thrilling Other One is good enough for me, and (your, and Eric's) help is on the way, thanks! I trust your choices completely... of course, you have to answer for them, not me, so... rock on. I'm smirking as I write this, it's nothing serious... : ) I'm hoping we're gonna get a set of tragedy ballads (any Jerry is good), but I always aim high.

More or less their theme song, evidenced by the 20th Anniv. Cryptical[s] and the more than any other song, not even close, "Other One Tease", or "jam" bus that never come by.

My first Other One was 3-21-85 at my 10th show in my fourth year of shows (1st show 4-5-82). It blew my mind. Every live one after that did as well. Had to be 20 or more..

On tape they don't come across as strongly and it strains me to point out "good captures." Thanks.
indydarkstar 2009-02-10 18:24:22
thanks for the work you put into these steve. My guess is this will be yet another in a growing list of what makes the GD the band we all know and love.I really enjoy these noteworthy collections as it gives a good perspective of where the songs began and what they eventually morphed into in later years.

How can you have a list of Other Ones without 5/2/70?
billytell 2009-02-11 01:21:15
While all the version included are worthy, I am mystified by the lack of version from 1972 through 1976. In 1972 you've got 5/3, 5/10 and 5/26 plus 9/17 , 9/23 and 12/31 and many others. From 1976 there's 7/18, 10/10 and 10/15. From 1973 there's the amazing 6/22 plus 10/30. I guess you can't have them all.
SteveSw 2009-02-11 10:23:12
3/1/69, 2/13/70, 5/2/70, and 4/28/71 were all on Eric's list. The reason they're not in this collection is, they're all commercially released, and I had no AUD alternative to include.

Like I said, I tried to find alternatives to these that were "like" each of the omitted versions to my year. Since "like" is very subjective, you may not agree with my substitutions....

I'm with you, billytell. If this were my list, there would surely be two from '72, two from '73, and two from '74 in there. I would add one from Europe, your choice of '73 is as good as any, and I would throw in one of the Other Ones from Sept/Oct '74. I would probably include one from '76, and another from May '77. And then I might leave out one of the two from '85. And then I might add a couple more from '89-'91.

But it is already a long list.
ifthir 2009-02-11 18:44:12
I apologize I did not read that well enough to spot the note about 5/2/70.

For me, it was hearing a badass Other One that really got me interested in the Dead. I was completely hooked when looked and listened deeper, and found a wealth of historical information about America that this song contains.

On that note, a big belated thanks to George Grantham for quelling my misconceptions on the Dead with a healthy dose of a badass Other One.
