| Description | This project is designed to go hand in hand with the Grateful Dead Listening Guide
(www.deadlistening.com).
The Grateful Dead Listening Guide is designed primarily to enrich the listening
experience of new and seasoned fans vis-a-vis the exploration of audience recordings.
Although soundboard sources are at times featured on the Grateful Dead Listening Guide,
this project's main goal will be to explore the audience sources suggested
in the guide. While different sources are appreciated by different people for
different reasons, this project will focus on the particular sources suggested in
the Grateful Dead Listening Guide along with a link to the guide's review of that
show/source. Most of the audience sources suggested in the guide are also available
at the Live Music Archive. This project's main aim will be to also spread these
sources via bittorrent to increase awareness to those who may be intimidated by
the amount of resources available at the Live Music Archive. This project is done
with thanks to the Grateful Dead Listening Guide and for your listening pleasure.

Ahh.. The Uptown Theater.
You want to talk about shows that simply did not circulate? 05/17/78 Chicago was one of the holiest of grails. Attributed to that tendency of Midwest shows to be very hard to find on tape years later, 05/17 was REALLY hard to find. When I first found it, it was horribly off speed, and hissy to the point of painful. But that music!!!!
Years later, taper Bob Wagner hooked me up with the reels that I transferred for both of these date, bringing some much deserved high quality sonics to some MUCH deserving high quality shows.

Funk yes! I was listening to DP 25 last night, 5/10/78 New Haven and 5/11 Springfield, MA, so these shows are just after those. I noticed the band was playing the songs a little fast on DP 25 (the pitch actually seems fast to me just a bit on that, but it could just be that the boys were not watching there speed very closely and rushing the tempos. Frank Zappa used to do that occasionally after he'd played a song for many years, he rush right through it... but I digress).
Nice bit o' Sarah-dipity here!!! FUNK YES!!! '78 is a rocking year, quicker and harder than '77, and perhaps not quite so much jamming, but a lot of good music and of course by Nov. they were firing on ALL cylinders!!!
