Generally speaking, 1985 represents a sort of peak for the band relative to most of the 80's, exceeded only by the even higher point they achieved in 1989 and 1990. It's hard to listen to the average 1986 show without hearing the drop-off from what came before. Still, Eric has found some interesting shows in here that are well worth checking out.

86-02-11, the Mardi Gras show, is interesting more on account of the vibe than on account of the actual playing. In the first set, it sounds to me like Bobby is really in a rockin' mood, so the Minglewood and the Music are both good efforts at summoning, ratcheting up, and focusing the energy. But somehow, everything else seems more skillful than exciting: a very formal sort of China Cat > Rider and an interesting but ultimately normal Bird Song are the noteworthy examples of this. It's not bad at all, it's just not really taking off. The second set is a lot more raggedy, but in an oh-so-interesting way. There are Neville Bros sitting in for most of the rest of the show, and the set exudes happy joy. The Aiko captures this energy best: it's not exactly clear what sort of Aiko they're trying to play, but it sure sounds like they're having fun. Everything sounds like Drums, including the opening Drums of course, but also, the Eyes is a more rhythm and less color than expected, in a good way. Eric points out how highly unusually Jerry plays the Truckin', which makes it interesting. And then the encore is just everyone having a ball, which is great fun to listen to all these years later. Not a bad tape to have around for when you're in a party mood.

Eric says that 86-03-20 is a "fine show overall." I'm not sure I can follow him there. The compendium reviewer argues that this might be the worst-ever Althea, for instance, and while I'm not sure I can agree with that either, it is not particularly good. Most of the first set has a keystone kops kind of feel to it, each player at odd with all the others, but then at the end, Bobby makes a little funny about practice making perfect, and they bust out Box Of Rain. Even if you don't like AUDs, you should go listen to this track on the AUD just to hear the crowd's reaction. It's a fine appreciative moment. To my ears, the high from the Box Of Rain bust-out continues through the pre-drums part of the second set: the Aiko is well-played (and Bobby sings!), and both the Estimated and the Eyes get a good does of attention. From there things retreat back to first-set form, everyone in a bit of a hurry and trying to get to the meeting they've scheduled after the show. So it goes.

86-03-27 is another Maine Masterpiece, a show Eric nominates as the best of '86. There's a lot of energy and a fair amount of tempo in the opening Jack Straw and Peggy-O, both quite interesting, the pair offering a good omen for what is to come. The only "Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues" follows (why was it dropped so quickly? it seems to have had potential), and flows into a fast but mellow Bertha. The rest of the set is "unusual" and well-jammed, which is what you are looking for after all: I particularly like the flow from the Supplication Jam into the Promised Land. In retrospect, surely a first set that you'd dream of in those days. In the second set, Brent shines in the China Cat > Rider transition, which calls good energy from Jerry, which summons the magic thing. Brent continues to be the engine in the Estimated > Eyes, pulling Jerry back up and in and then out. The energy really crests in the great post-Eyes jam: it sounds like Truckin' for a bit, and then everyone leaves but Jerry and we get a nice bit of drums-and-guitar. Drums is unusually melodic, and Space is unusually coherent for how far away it goes: I particularly like the flow from Space into the Spanish Jam and then into the Truckin' that was worked out before Drums. Interestingly, the wild end of Truckin' is pushed out into the late middle of Wharf Rat -- that jamming is good. The energy at the end is fun, and what do you make of Bob's encore thought? "It takes a heap of homing to make a pigeon toe." Is this one of those flashbacks our parents warned us about?

This is not a period where I'd write home about the AUDs, but, there are a few worth checking out....

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

Tasty, love the Maine show, Nevilles *are* fun (they just can't be denied).

BTW: I happened (luck) to be at the "Big Boy Pete" show at HJK ('85 or '86?), I think 11/86, but I was up in the seats, thus not getting caught in the current, but interesting show, nonetheless. I think I dtermined to be "up front", or at least by the SBD or closer from here on in. I gotta have some contact, at least the possibility.

Thank you, great work! Insightful comments regarding '86 vs. '85, though I haven't (still) been able to get too psyched about '89-'90, perhaps your picks can change that (jamming, energy, Jerry emotion, great DrumSpaces..., sometimes just a great flow to a major portion of a set, that vibe of not rushed, and not sluggish, just smooth flowing real American Beauty, I trust your picks).

BTW: I think it's 3/2/87 with the Morning Dew set ender and Johnny B. Goode encore that was a complete mind bender for me personally, and one helluva show. Listen to the end of Set 1 thru the Encore, heady stuff, strange spirits and ultimate rock 'n' troll redemption... Tip o' the skull of you. My energy was scattered by the begining of Drums, Truckin' was shakey, but by the time we got back at the end of Morning Dew ("I guess it doesn't matter, anyway~!" INDEED), and my buddy asked, "What do u think they'll play for the encore?" There was no hesitation, I stated, "Johnny B. Goode!", WHAM! A couple seconds later, uh-huh, "Johnny B. Goode". That was the ONLY and the one song that could wrap up that evening, no doubt. "Johnny Be Good!"

The 2-11 show is not to missed. I remember taking a nice tape of this show camping, like less than six months after the show I suppose, anyway I just floored the people (mostly fellow heads) who were there. We played the hell out of that tape on that trip. At night around the campfire, deep in the woods, minds altered, sorry started to flashback...Anyway this is an essential show for sure!

the way I always heard Bobby's encore quip was ""It takes a heap of hoeing to make a pigeon toed" (toad?)

gotta agree that the Portland shows were some of the better ones from '86 - I'm particularly partial to the 2nd night's 2nd set - blew me away that night and still does every time I give it a spin - great stuff!

added bonus: I bought the concert program, autographed by all the band members but Jerry, plus Jon McIntire, and that night's backstage pass (alas, after the fact) from a dude near the 'quipment trucks at the rear of the civic center that 2nd night (think they cost me $20 - I'm surprised any of this happened, as I was quite outta my head by that time) - check 'em out!

That's really fucking cool Zebweber. I love how they initially mis-spelled "Grateful". Oh to have been born 20 years sooner.

yeah, it was one of those "psst - you wanna buy a pass?" deals - I don't vividly remember what happened that night after the show, but I do know we were looking for the car in the lot and I must've wandered away from my buddies, and then I saw this dude by the band's trucks at the rear of the building - I'm not one to voluntarily put myself in potentially dangerous situations, so I'm sure he approached me, and must've appeared harmless, especially since he claimed to have GD signed stuff!

turns out, he had the goods and I have some keepsake collectibles from a very enjoyable weekend in Maine - and I'll never forget the opening notes of Box Of Rain the first night - my brother and I were bouncing 2-3 feet in the air for the first minute of the song!

and of course the hot topic during set break that night was Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues - "what was that tune about Speed Racer and his arcade androids??"

good times, good tunes!

I also am stuck at 97.7 %. Can someone help us finish?
