Laguna Seca is certainly a beautiful place. These are the first (and to my understanding the best) shows the Dead ever played there. The 87-05-09 show has a lot to recommend it: Eric notes that the band might play it safe here or there (I'd say, they lost the ability to really jam, and the instructions won't be beamed down for a couple more years). Be that as it may, the show is very good. The entire show is a Sugar Mag sandwich; the Sugar Mag > Sugar Ree opener and the Sunshine closer are really sweet. The Tennessee Jed and especially the Let It Grow that end the first set are quite noteworthy for this period, the sort of controlled jamming like what Phil and Bobby do these days. The second set is solid like the first set, not for the deep-jam-lover perhaps, but there is some serious interest in LLR > He's Gone and in Wharf Rat. And then, if you were interested, you could stick around and help with the filming of the Touch Of Grey video. How sweet is that????
87-05-10 isn't as famous as 87-05-09, but I'm not sure why. Neither show stands up to comparisons to 1977 or 1990, but this one is as good as it gets in 1987! Eric likes the first set: he calls out the Box > Desolation > Don't Ease closer, which are great, but I would also call out the Half-Step > Stranger opener. Suffice it to say, another great opening set. The second set is not so bad either. The Scarlet > Fire is sweet for this era, as is the China Doll > Playin' out of Drums > Space. The point is, whatever your larger context makes of these shows, when we were going to them in the moment, a show like this was what you wished for.
So far as I know, 87-08-20 does not circulate publicly in SBD form. Which is too bad, as this seems like a very interesting show. The first sete is truly wacked: an unexpected and well-rocked Big Boss Man into a great Promised Land, a noteworthy Dire Wolf, an well-explored Cassidy, and an unexpected When Push Comes To Shove closer. Eric has a source we don't have, so we don't get to hear Phil play the "Whole Lotta Love" bass part during the tune-up. But the boys work in the second set, it's long and interesting. Eric calls the China Cat > Rider "frisky", and that's good: a version that is cute but not beautiful, if you know what I mean. Then comes a good Man Smart (Woman Smarter), a song I've always loved on so many levels. The Truckin' > Smokestack is brilliantly danceable and not half-bad in the listening way, and then after a great Space > Drums we get a fab second half of the second set. I call your attention to the Gimme Some Lovin > Watchtower sequence, this is Watchtower at one part of its best, definitely something to write home about. And Stella is not bad, either ;)

This project is a musical adjunct to and a book review of Eric Wybenga's _Dead To The Core_. I'm going to seed a copy of all the music mentioned in the book except for the stuff that has been commercially released. You might want to pick up a copy of the book and read along with me while I'm seeding -- I think it'll be worth your while. Here are some of the many places you can find one:

| Now how's THAT for timing? I think, "Hey, I'm falling behind on Steve's DttC downloads," I click to Favorites, and what should the top show be? DttC-086 and I get to be the first to hop on board. As always, Steve, thanks for the continuing fine work on this project, especially your own liner notes which I always copy and paste into my info files for sharing with others. You're basically writing the addendum companion to Eric's book. |

| I liked '88 better but '87 wasn't bad by any means. The Touch Of Grey video was filmed the first night if I remember right. |

| Btw, I could've sworn that I used to have a DSBD of 8-20-87 on tape with a very (very) short Whole Lotta Love tuning. I guess that source hasn't been put into circulation for download. Wish I still had it. |

| I have or had and ultra mix version of 8/20 which was just ok. Don't remember a true sbd of this one. I thought it was a great "punchy" show indeed. I will grab a piece and compare to my master aud.. |

So, I guess the downside (no pun intended) to opium is . . . uhh, I don't remember. I do kmind aremember the "Tennessee", "Let It Grow", and I'm always a little disappointed that "T Jed" is never (and is never going to be) as good as on E '72, but I thougt I rmemebered they were trying (jamming it,w hich is good) and I DO rmeember I was most impressed by the "Let It Grow", like "Aha! we got it! NICE jammin'!" I DO rmemeber the "Touch" video shoot like it was yesterday. Billy K. kept he crowd entertained, "We're gonna be a few more minutes seting up another shot, you can switch spots, swithch genitals" which I remember him saying more than once (What was that all about?), but he was wentertaining. Kinda like the guy in the center ring at the circus doing the announcing (gotta be a name for that person) Ring Master! OK... 2nd day quite fun. Either the first day or second, there were 2 guys walking through the crowd, one in a gorilla, no a skeleton suit, and either Dave or my brother Ty told me people weresaying that was Bobby Weir. He came close enough to us that we gave him the tip o' the skull and the "Hey", but I didn't really think it was Bobby, it was. There was a band who played in the parking lot that first night and they played the weirdedst music ever, no words, just weird jams were they'd whip up some energy in a very organic way, and then finish playing. it was truly strange (anyone remember them?). No real solos or anything... Reminds me of the name of the band "Ozric Tentacles" should sound like, not sure if that IS who that was (in an early incarnation perhaps) or if their music just reminded me of that. it was kinda like the music was reachinout into the crowd and engulofing it, then it would just, leave, the song would end. Weird. I'd love to hear a recording of them, also! Lotta nitrous near the gate to the field where the Dead played, as I recall. I'm behind one of the girsl on top of someone's shoulders in the video. I kept telling my brother and friedn "Let's move up a few feet" not even knowing at first it was a video shoot, and THEN when I see the video and see I was just A FEW STEPS from being in it, it makes me pissed that some people never want to get closer to the stage!!!! From now on, if I wanna get closer, I'm just a=gonna GO!! Sorry!
I dig the Park City, also. They always played well in Utah, Boise, and Montana (Mormon Country), even Colorado and New Mexico and Texas. Have you heard of the Grateful Dead? Oh yes, such nice fellas. great manners, very well behaved, but that road crew, buncha unwashed immoral ANIMALS!
My borhter had a girlfriend who was related to Jer, like 2nd cousin or soenting and she saw him at a family reunion in the '70s. I said, "You know Jerry Garcia?", she said, "Yeah he's one of my cousins or something. He plays in some okie band!" No shit, just like that. She had black hair and olive skin, maybe she was Spanish or Portugese or something, as I recall (Italian?). Mediterranean, anyway.
Thanks! |

I was going to hit Park City after the Telluride weekend but got a call before Sunday's show that my mom was having open-heart surgery Tuesday back up in Denver. She knew about it ahead of time but didn't tell me because she didn't want me to miss the Telluride shows, she knew how much I was looking forward to it. She was way cool and I miss her.
This year I had to put my dad up in Denver in hospice on Father's Day. My wife was flying in from Auburn two days later and we had a connecting flight to Durango to go to Bluegrass in Telluride. He told me Monday to "take off, have fun for me!" He passed Wdnesday afternoon and I honored his wishes by partying with Yonder up on the mountain. Miss him, big time, too.
Thanks for the upload. I'm grabbing it with the two of them in mind. |

Laguna Seca almost got out of the concert business. The Pointer sisters were 2 hours late and then did a 20 minute show because they had to catch a plane. My Father ,Jim Cansler, was superintendent of Monterey County Parks, and in charge of booking the venue.I told him he needed to call Bill Graham. He told me Bill would call him if he wanted to do business. As fate would have it,I was leaving a free show in golden gate park when I see Bill walking by himself.I had seen him before at dead shows and tried to speak to him then but was always dismissed. So I got right to business, telling him"Bill,I Might have a new venue for ya".He was all ears whipping out his notepad and pumping me for details, like parking and porta potties.I gave him my Dad's number and told him they're waiting for him to call.
My Dad was smug when he told me"See I Told you he would Call".I just told him "Yeah, because I gave him your phone number"
I got passes and reserved camping for both years.
Phish and Bob Dylan would play there in the future but mostly because of parking problems the county supervisors voted any future concerts would have an attendance limit of 10,000 .
Before the first shows I was having dinner with my parents and My Dad asked me if I had ever seen anyone get kicked out of a Grateful Dead concert.I smiled and replied"Yeah,Me."
The forks stopped in mid-air while they waited for an explaination.I had been escorted out at the end of the first set on 12-16-86 for taping in front of the board. |

| Montana is "Mormon Country"? Folks up here don't take kindly to such sweeping generalizations, and we're not too polite to point such malaprops out. But I love Russjcan's story because it recalls the very human connections that weave this wonder we call the Deadhead world. |

Hey, guys, these are really great stories, thanks!
And yeah, I think 1987 is better than 1986, and 1988 is better than 1987, and 1989 is better than 1988. And then things peak through 1991 before going into the last slide.

| The gimme some>watchtower smokes!!! They hadn't been playing it too long at this point and there's a moment where Jerry figuratively tells Bobby to step back & then explodes! The Stella that follows is amazing; way, way underrated! I was surprised Eric didn't mention it in the book! Thanks again, SteveSw! |
