Here is last night's Lonesome County show from, where else, one of my favorite hangouts, The Ark in Ann Arbor. I was hangin' with Chad of Lonesome County backstage a couple of weeks ago here at the Greensky Bluegrass show. He invited me for tonight's show as they were going to be doing a live recording. I was traveling back with Jesse from Chi-town after a couple of moe. shows at the Riviera. I drove the whole way back. About halfway, I looked at my watch and it hit me, TIME CHANGE - 1 HOUR! I forgot. Pedal to the metal and we got back to the house in Michigan at 6:25. I grabbed all my stuff, and was on the road to Ann Arbor in 2 minutes. Doors were at 7:00, always earlier on Sunday. I found a parking spot on the street and was inside at 7:27. I squeezed into the 4th row where I usually try and get. My "neighbors" were very gracious and let me set up there. Thanks! I was ready to roll as the opener hit the stage a couple of minutes later.
Lonesome County came up on stage after John's intro to a thunderous ovation. Everyone seemed pumped to be at this live recording. The boys were a tad nervous at first, which is understandable from the pressure of recording a live cd. The first set was a very nice mix of originals and tasty covers. Hard to do a bluegrass set without sprinkling in a few covers from the many legends of this genre. I really liked the renditions of The Old Home Place, New Camptown Races, The Bluebird Singin', and Salt Creek.
After a short set break, the boys came back to work. Some more choice covers along with band originals. Great version of Blackberry Blossom. Here is a song that will let you see what a band has for chops! It was nice to see Mr' Pace get the call to join on the last 4 with his dobro prowess. Cold Sheets of Rain is one of my old favorites.
Great to see Greg assisting with the sound production. There was a bit of feedback on a couple of songs. Paul's bass mic came loose a couple of times as well. And what would a Lonesome County show be without Chad busting a couple of guitar strings! Some funny banter going back and forth on stage kept us laughing. A nice Sunday night winter crowd, and a good time at The Ark as always! The bitter cold March air certainly was a wake up call as we exited. No time for dinner in my haste to make the show, so it was Pad Thai at King Shing on the way out of town.
