Enjoy folks :)

Thanks for the show, but 48kz is not much better than 44.1???

I don't get what is audiophile about this?

If it was 24 bit I understand, but I'm not sure why you made a 48 & 44.1 in 16bit.

3900 more samples out of 48,000 is 8%. I doubt someone with perfect hearing could tell the difference. If you were doing high end effects in the studio I could see using 96, but even that is probably overkill 99% of the time.

But, to each their own.

Heya puunjab, its better than cd quality, I have gotten complaints from users that have downloaded 48kHz files and could not burn them to cd. I want to make it very clear that these are NOT cd files. They are higher quality and DO sound better, 8% gain and no 48kHz to 44.1kHz resample `is` better, and `is` higher than cd quality which puts it in the audiophiles realm. Any conversion done, even 88.2 to 44.1 which would be the best conversion possible since it is an even division by 2, will affect the wave. I recorded this in 16bit/48kHz which is its native mode. i.e. - there is no conversion, so it will sound better in this mode without a doubt. No, this is not some huge upgrade to 24bit, but it is an upgrade and if nothing else, getting it in its native mode would be well worth it for me, this is true source, not a translation thereof. Hopefully that answers your questions as to my reasoning.

The best reason I can think of is to get the "pure" archive version of the recording. Or, if you're a person who has to put shows to disc, these files could be fed into Lplex & you'd get 1 dvd with 16/48 PCM audio that has the entire seamless show - no disc changes!
taperj 2009-03-08 19:58:08
I was also going to mention that I do many times do work with videographers and release the 48kHz specifically for the DVD since it cant handle the 16/48 LPCM audio(that was not the case on this release). Thanks for bringing that up Joe.
obaaron 2009-03-08 23:49:08
bottom line is cd's are out as far as audiophiles are concerned and anything above/higher quality no matter how minuscule is welcome...to me at least ;>) Particularly with all of the technology available. Learn how to resample if it is an issue!!

Less work transferring too.....many dats recirded in the field until the last three years was done on dat at 16/48 so for archiving sake much more music will see the light if tapers don't feel "obligated" to re-master to cd quality.

my $.02!

Very nice explanation of the 44.1/48kHz difference guys! It is true that DVD video requires at a minimum of 48kHz audio, so any recordings originally made at 44.1 would have to be upsampled. I hope you didn't take my previous request for 44.1 as a complaint (your Magnolia Electric matrix is the show I was trying to think of) but rather a suggestion/request.

Incidentally, it was great to meet you guys at the Joe's Garage gig last night, and my audio and little camera videos came out just fine! :-)
taperj 2009-03-10 12:05:53
Heya morst! Was awesome to finally meet you last night! The board feed I got was a little funky and our mics being in the back of martyrs sound a little muddy on my initial listen. I'm guessing you may have gotten the best pull on your H4 being in the middle of the room. Please post that, I'd love to take a listen. I had actually debated setting up at a table last night since I've never seen Martyrs' set up in such a civilized fashion but I thought I would probably get shut down since they don't allow mic stands on the floor. My buddy also did video last night so if your source sounds best we'll probably use it on the DVD if you have no complaints, and of course we'll hook you up with a dvd :) Drop me a mail at john_n_kiva@yahoo.com sometime.
Cheers :)
