EASY JIM
very good question..we have FOBS on the same stand from GD tour that are about 1-2 seconds off over the whole show and they were both sony10 pro dat decks.
no time clock is exact, so i do wonder how they watched for this.
again, minutae, source is very good. |

Stupid off topic question, but....what does YVMV stand for in people's comments?
I tried looking up this abbreviation and only came up with Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus....lol;) |

Going to throw my 0.02$ into the fray here.
When people throw up a source or a show and it's teeming with superlatives, chances are pretty good that they're able to back it up. I had listened to the "no spoilers" AUDs from the Hampton run, listened once, and wasn't going to pull any other sources, but I had to see what this seed was all about.
It's really great. It's one of the better AUD recordings I've heard of Phish or the GD, and I'm excited about the rest of the weekend.
Remember the Giants Stadium GD show that the Mayor seeded here- and people's feathers were ruffled when he called it the best show of the 90's? I disagree, but it made me listen to the show in a new light knowing that someone out there loved it so much.
Download this source if you have any interest in Phish. |

Trying to answer questions.
First off, one of the tapers has been really psyched with all the positive comments. Thanks for all the nice words. Second, he wasn't all that please with the many superlatives I pumped in. Anyhow - it was the best way to make sure I got everyone's attention.
As far as tech notes, yes I know they are lean and for that I am sorry. I know this was big team effort as the tapers are just that, tapers. They sent it to a guy to sync the 2 channels and then to another to perform a variety of post production. Kinda surprised that has not been commented on all the obvious DSP.
Here is the scoop on that....besides getting each channel in sync (which is spot on, you verify that it is perfect with some headphones) there as been some aggressive EQing, some left/right panning and bit of Waves L3 Ultramaximizer to get the most out of it - a little pump up.
I hope all the buzz will get these guys to get the next 2 nights out. Even though they have some issues, I for one would like to get my hands on them anyway. |

| sounds like a nice coordinated effort...understandable to hype up a great source....I think all of the sources sound very nice and thank you to all the tapers and tech guys out there for bringing us hours of pure enjoyment;) |

I've always wanted to run a rig similar to this (two omni's FOB right near the stacks) but I always figured to do it you'd have to run some sort of wireless mics.. which I assumed would sound like ass. I never considered running two separate decks. Very smart.
Well done. |

Great constructive discussion!!! I also hope we can hear the other nights despite any flaws.
As a side note, mosT to of us are somewhat anal about this stuff in one form or another. Anyone care to share their playback equipment? Is there a better forum for this type of question?
I wonder if what is done here in general with recordings is carried over into being an audiophile or just A phanatic about recordings? I assume being anal about these recordings means we aren't listening on our ipods with $10 earbuds?

this sounds amazing on headphones (flac > my trusty Sony MDR-V600s - almost 10 years old)
I agree that it's not very bassy, but some low end tweaks on the eq helps that...
how good is this PA they're using? It sounds like The Wall of Sound from 1974 in its clarity!
thanks for sharing, and for not hyping this source too much ;)

Is there any way you would be willing to re-seed the show without all the pesky DSP, EQ and syncing; just one rig's DAT on one channel and the other's DAT in the other?
We could then have a giant pissing contest putting it back together to suit our own tastes and equipment!
-Noah
p.s. my **remaster** of this source will be the BEST AUD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

So i've finally had some time this evening to listen to this a bit more than the 5 minute sample i had this morning. All i can say is wow. I'm listening on some klipsch and it sounds fantastic. I would agree on the eq comments below, i did the same thing. Really sounds fantastic. I like it more than the fob mk22 which is also a very stellar tape, no slouch over there as well and that whole crew. Diving into set 2 now!
Thanks!

How great to come back 24 hours later and read a BUNCH of really well thought out questions and critiques as well as some insightful (in-EAR-ful?) thoughts on the physical soundscape of the recording. Says a lot about the taping community when there are so many sources out there and this one fosters such a spirited and healthy conversation. Nice also to hear that the uploader got mildly chastised for the superlatives -- no harsh intended, especially since he outted himself on that -- because one thing we seem to stay away from (and nicely!) on bt.etree.org is using such language in the tags. Remember, beauty is in the ear of the behearer.
Again, thanks for a spirited conversation and I look forward to even more thoughts as people get a chance to give all the sources their fair hearing. |
