Having been intimately familiar with 9/19/70 for many years, I would say this - it has always been a fantastic recording, but loosing the additional reel generation reveals a wealth of detail and "depth of field" which I had not encountered before. It's as if your camera was slightly out of focus, you make a minor adjustment to the focus ring and all of a sudden everything comes into sharp focus.
The "ah ha" moment I had came when I first gave it a close listen with my headphones. As the first verse finishes and they enter into the quiet space, there are a couple of hoots and hollars and then a couple of people far back in the theater can be heard to laugh out loud. A couple of people to their left, go,"Shhh, shhh!" A minor detail, but it jumped out at me. I could practically tell what seats they were sitting in. I later put on the older copy and all of that was discernable, but fairly obscured by the additional tape hiss and I probably would never have noticed it. That's the kind of thing that I mean by bringing the recording into sharper focus. And it goes on from there to the clarity and separation of the instruments, the way you can hear the music play out into the hall, etc.
That said, I have listened to it rolling along in my car, not paying particularly close attention, and it's hard to tell the difference from the older copy.
I have been a huge fan of 9/18 and 19/70 for a long time. The reel masters have been a revelation for me, and I hope they will be for you, too.
Enjoy,
Chuck
PS - I also have really enjoyed listening in to all the off mic talk between the band members and audience goings on between all the songs. Fun stuff! |

| Yes on the NFA Darkness/China Cat Jam. I found it interesting that they played Darkness, Darkness over the House PA at the end of 9/18, the night before. Perhaps that provided the inspiration for the jam the following night. |

Track 5's checksums don't match what's in db.etree.org. Can you confirm that what you're posting here is actually correct and that the db.etree.org needs to be updated?
Thanks! |

This is my favorite show from 1970....
There actually is b&w video of this show, shot by Bill Graham's crew. I wonder where that footage is.
Darkness Jam/China Cat jam is part of "Not Fade Away." |

This is one recording with a lot of depth in its sound.
If you have a big stereo system at home, turn it up high, and turn the lights down low. Close your eyes and you amost feel like you are in Fillmore East. A great experience. |

Or if you're family-bound, put on a good pair of headphones, dim the lights and disappear down the rabbit hole.

Yes... beautiful depth in this recording. A fine example occurs in minute 13 of the dark star. They are in a noodling space and at 13:09 jerry starts a scary sounding repeating riff that seems like it begins 100 yards away from you gradually gets right up front with everybody else.
The feelin groovy jam and the few minutes leading up to it is one of the most beautiful things they ever played. Jerry's tone is just sublime. |

| I think previous versions had Pigpen's rap bleeped for radio airplay. This one isn't! |
