I want to say something here (yeah, here we go...). [BTW, my PC freezes every now and then, and I'm not gonna fix every typo...]
I REALLY DIG LATTER-DAY DEAD HEADS, y'know, "post-coma" Dead heads (Jerry's coma, NOT the Dead Head's coma, albeit, well, nevermind... what? I don't know weither, trust me, and even I wouldn't do THAT! Trust me, that is... It gets confusing real quick, on with the show) Anyway (yes that was partly pure gibberish, so don't try and understand...) here's the point, the...
CRUX OF THE BISCUIT:
I really dig Dead Heads who became fans around the time of what I'll call "Latter-Day Dead", because, it IS Latter-Day Dead, is it not? I'm speaking of around say, post-coma, or '88, '89, even '92, '93, etc. and here's the reason why (one of them), on the one hand, I think, Wow, how can these people be so in love with Latter-Day Dead when that music is NOT quite what it was, perhaps, or is in a different way, perhaps not as... "profound"? Cosmic? Mind-expanding? What... ya dig? Just not quite the same, HOWEVER (!!!!!), Latter-Day Dead IS BETTER THAN 99.999 percent of what is out there NOW!!!!!! So, on that account, I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND the love for Latter-Day Dead, it makes a whole lotta funking sense (when I say "funking", I'm using that as a substitute for another word...)! It makes a world of sense, because most of what is out there now, the rap is derivative, disgusting and dirty (and REALLY DUMB!!!), the "rock" and the "new country" is crap that I COULDWRITE, and I AM NOT a great songwriter, so when I think, that sounds like something I would write, I KNOW it is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY far away from being as good as Bob Dylan (funny little guyh with a nasal whine), Bob Hunter, Pete Twohnshend, even Led ZAZeppelin (hippy dippy flower child wannabe lyrics, I love Percy, don't get me wrong, and if anyone knows how Bobby Plant got the nickname of "Percy", please let me know... still haven't discovered that way over 20 years on and TEN YEARS GONE! Everyone MUST OWN "Physical Graffiti", just do it already, youll thank me, "Down By The Seaside", or perhaps we could lunch in Bron-Yr-Aur...).
Look, you're right (not deluded) Grateful dead IS the shtuff, and a '93 concert WAS GREAT, compared to WHAT ELSE WAS GOING DOWN AT THE TIME!!! Comparing old Dead to new Dead is like comparing OJ when he was a running back with the Buffalo Bills to OJ now... still the same "slash and run" style, yet somehow a little different... OK?
Latter-Day Dead heads, YOU DO get it! YOU DO have great taste (and how 'bout that Lesh Philling?!? YES!!!), don't let anyone put you down for digging Latter-Day Dead, it's great stuff. Now, if you really want to get deep into the moo-goo, check out some '69 Dead, or '75 , or '74 Phil and Ned, you'll warm up to it, trust me, and if not, I think you just might need a little, like, "vision quest" or something... relax and let the music flow!
BTW: Been listening to the '73 Winterland Box Set, lotta great music there, akin to Boston and Providence later that month (11-30, 12-01 1973, I believe, and oh how I BELIEVE!!!)

i'm a "latter-day" deadhead. saw my first show at age 15 (rfk 1990 - killer show btw). My first real exposure to the dead were cassettes from frost 86, hampton 87, greek 89 and so on. This was the GD to me. A few years later, when 2 from the vault came out, I bought it - and was blown away by their sound.
Since then, I have (of course) been collecting shows from all eras, but I have to say - after listening to it all, I generally prefer the "modern" dead sound, and find jerry's playing to overall improve as time went on. People feel the 70's were the best and I just don't see it... good stuff there, but not "better" to me. |

download this show if you are a vince-hating late era basher (or if you dig all years of the dead). I went to all three shows of this run and the playing all three nights was top notch.

Great posts here. Ummm, what can I say? I was turned on to the Dead in 1988 by a friend I met at Junior College. He was turned on by a veteran old guy and wife in the burbs of Chicago. My first shows were Rosemonts 89 and what setlists they were. I ofcourse didn't realize at the time how awesome it was because I had done other things for the first time too. I went to alpine 89 all three shows in the mud lot and it was the stuff books are written about. I collected about 600 hours of cassette Dead in the late 80's early 90"s and was mostly hooked on the newer stuff as a young adult.
However, I did appreciate even having the opportunity to listen to history as it were of a vintage dead show, but they were not in my constant repetition like the better sounding boards and aud tapes I had post 80 or so.
Years later and drifting away for awhile to try to make a living and coming back to the boys in the digital era, I'm more in love with them then I've ever been. Not only that, I listen to more 70's than I do anything else and I know why people say what they do. I now know both sides and can see it fairly objectively. Yes, Jerrys tone had a crystal clarity in the later days that digital and good recordings brought out to a greater degree than shows of the past. In one sense, it seems that if you could have attended a show in the 70's you would be able to hear the clean tone that was enhanced by better recording equipment later.
I like it all, but my saliva drips when I see 72 73 74 76 77 and now 78 is my latest appreciation and semi obsession. I listent to 3 shows from the 70's then one from the early 80's and then one from the post coma period. I love these guys. I love the diversity, I love the simplicity, the complexity, the evolution, you name it.
The whole point of this rant is that I can see and hear why the 70's are the height of their tight looseness and exploration as well as sound. The equipment used to get that sound was not the same as the equipment used to capture the post coma sound. And neither was the equipment they played with. This is where I simply don't know, I understand they did use some Macintosh equipment but beyond that I can't discuss the nuances of the amps, pre amps and monitors/ speakers, but I can also see exactly why newer heads "post coma" return to the newer sound. It has a crispness and more modern flavor that the older stuff doesn't quite have. Anyway, I better end this.... For what its worth, I didn't list all the shows I went to and I only attended about 20 but they were huge to me.
Bless all of you that work to spread this music, it is huge and the Deads legacy grows over time as more people realize what they were about and the way they approached music. |

i too listen to the early 70's stuff to get a side of the dead i don't get in the 80-95 era - i do find their playing to be more advanced later - jerry's note choices while soloing over the more harmonically complex progressions like that of "deal" just leave alot to be desired compared to his approach over same tune during, say, 1990.
but see, ITS ALL SO GOOD and what other band has such a massive catalogue chronicaling an ever changing sound as the dead. Not even Phish, whom I love, shows such an elastic ability to subtly change arrangements to songs as time moves on |
