Here is last night's Steep Canyon Rangers show from Cleveland. I was totally up in the air on where I might go for a show. I had a choice of Rod and Annie Capps in Jackson, Mi., Joe Pug in Ann Arbor, or the SCR in Cleveland. You can see what I chose. I got there about 15 minutes into Shoe Fly's set, as they opened. I got pulled over by the local authorities on I-90 west of downtown. It was a routine check, as the officer said I went over the line of the lane I was in a couple of times. Hmmm. He kept me about 15 minutes, enough to make me late.

Got inside to a pretty full house. I went up front and set up next to George, about 5 feet from stage. Not much choice as everyone was seated and the show was in progress. I hung out with Melissa. I can almost always count on seeing her at a local bluegrass show every time I come to Cleveland! The boys emerged over by the bar as the opener played on. I went over to say hey and chewed the fat. They were a bit surprised to see me at the show. I have only caught their shows in the south, so tonight was very cool to see them a ways from home~! After the set ended, I went up front and contemplated moving my rig on stage. I asked Mike of SCR if he cared if I set my rig right in front of the lone vocal mic the boys sing into. He was very cool with that.

I went for it and recorded SCR from on stage. After the show, some Jebroni that was patched out of me was listening on head phones to his mini-disc recording. He said it was acapela and a bunch of audience noise. I was totally bummed. That is until we got in and I put my headphones to the test. Wow, it sounded great! You can't imagine my swing of emotion after hearing the recording! Whew!

It was a one set show of about 100 minutes. The crowd ate it up! They ran through a good part of their musical catalog. I was hoping they would NOT play Oklahoma Stomp, as that is what Oklahoma did to my "Cuse" in the Big Dance, just before their set began. But, Charles made mention of the game and they launched into it! Ouch, death, where is thy sting. Charles was streaming the North Carolina game on his laptop on stage next to his base. Remember, these guys are Tar Heals!

I liked the Turn Up The Bottle opener. There was a nice little instrumental jam that started Call Up The Captain. Mike played his sweet Kuykendall, probably their best instrumental every time they play it! The acapela Why Don't You Sit Down shows there vocal prowess. Woody handled the If I Could Make A Livin' perfectly. The entire show was on the money! After the show, we joined Graham, Mike, Woody, and Charles in the rv to visit and watch their North Carolina boys, whip the Zags!

Late night dinner was a tasty sandwich at Jimmy John's on Coventry. Happy Birthday Steve Bohannon!

They are playing at Northminster Presb Church on 52nd & Ralston in Broad Ripple (my inlaw's church) at 4pm. They host some decent free shows every month. Will be lots of respectful blue hairs there. Sactuary always has good acoustics. Now I gotta decide between basketball & bluegrass! Bet they finsh by 5:50pm for UNC tipoff! If I stilll lived a block from there I'd invite them over for the game...Thanks Z Man!

thanks to the taper - zman, have consistently enjoyed your recordings and I'd gladly buy you a beer one day. Feel that this one sounds especially good... I look forward to getting a few more listens in and recommend this to anyone on the fence.

also - attended the free show here in Indianapolis and had a great time! The acoustics *were* quite nice and I'm glad we wound up making the trek. had a nice dinner at the broad ripple brewpub afterward - wobbly bob is a great great pale ale to check out of you've never had it and it is on tap that day.

anyway, burned a copy for the band and gave it to the fiddle player @ the merch table. figure they'll maybe enjoy hearing a good recording of a recent show ;)
