Thanks, and thanks to Other3 for getting the 6-18 ball rolling, and I guess to me for making the request for the original 83s, great stuff!!!

I always rave about the early 80s and was listening to 770518 today (WOW!!! What a show! What a rippin' jam at the end of He's Gone, GO, Jer, GO!!!) I'll admit, sure '83 doesn't have that same magic/energy as say, '76 or '77, but it's apples and... pomegranates or something, different animals... May '77 is like a sleek and agile big cat, July '83 is like a roaring lion or an angry tiger, when it works right... both have their merits, their strengths, their charms, their mojo...

I still say Jerry's greatest guitar tones were win the GD in the early and mid-'80s and in the JGB in the late '80s and early '90s... such great tones, and such a wide variety of GREAT TONES!!!! Tiger rules the ropost in terms of his great guitars, a Fender Twin pre-amp, a McIntosh power amp and JBLs, can't beat it. When he went to a Groove Tube pre-amp, he lost something... In ear monitors are fine, but not a the expense of on stage ampiflication!!! MUST BE SCREAMING THROUGH AN AMP *ON STAGE*!!! Being forced to listen to your amp onstage and to kind of compete with everyone else on stage makes for great music. In-ear allows one to relax and play as if playing to a stereo headphone mix in studio, not the same. MUST COMPETE!!! Must fight for space in the audio spectrum! Must wail all over the top of everyone else!!! GO JERRRY, GO!!!! That's just the way it is, folks, and you'll never change my mind (and I play on stage, also, it'd be nice to hear better, but I *don't want to relax and play to a headphone mix*, too lazy, too complacent, too smooth, not enough edge, competition or chaos!!! A great musician plays *the room*, NOT to a headphone mix, Clapton, Jeff Beck, I could go on, Jimmy Page, etc., Frank Zappa, playing to the acoustics, the energy and the PEOPLE in THE ROOM!!! People will want to argue with this, but trust me, many years from now, when all is said and done and analyzed, I will be "proven" right. People will note that one thing that made for great live music was the way musicians played to the environment *out there*, NOT *in-ear*!!! A live musician isolated from the environment around him is actually crippled, NOT empowered!).

Evidence:

Hendrix at Monterey (not to mention Woodstock or Fillmore East...)

Townshend at Woodstock... or Leeds, or...

Frank Zappa creating "air sculptures" of sound, as he said, coming from his speakers and amp.

Why do most musicians still prefer to mic a speaker instead of going direct in? Something about the sound coming off those speakers is MAGICAL!!!

Jimmy Page actually used to use two mics when in studio, one close to the speaker, and one *across the room* to create depth... that was the method to his magic, the sound of THE ROOM!!! Can't argue with Led Zeppelin I!!!

Keith Richards has stated when he is recording he isn't searching for "music" as in chords and notes, but he is searching for SOUND!!! When that amp and speaker combo and guitar, etc. are *just right*, THAT's when the magic happens!!!

Competing for that sound on stage is part of what creates the tension and magic that happens live. When everyone can hear everyone else fine and they don't feel they need to compete for sonic space, some of that creative tension and competitiveness is gone, the struggle, the climb, without it, without that energy being put out to *be heard* and to *fit in*, there's just not enough *creative tension*. You have to kneed dough to make bread, churn milk to create butter, crank the handle to make ice cream... Man shall earn his bread by the sweat of his brow... no sweat, no struggle, no good stuff!!! Regardless of your beliefs, you gotta admit, that's a wise saying! As are a lot of things that are written...

Anyway, it will be a lot of fun to compare the Wise recording to the Silberman recording, and CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THAT MORNING DEW!!! Thank you all!!

Get this NOW and you will stop overlooking '83, it's a badass year if given a chance :)

thanks for this, sounds great. First set was very uneven--beginning was weak but it picked up at Birdsong. 2nd set is for the ages. Lightning we saw in the distance was wild during wheel and made for an unforgettable experience. There's nothing like a dead show at SPAC.

This was a great show. I'll never forget the opening of Bertha thundering across that lawn. I can close my eyes and I'm there!

I remember walking around for a while after the show with my friend Frank trying to find his car. I thought we'd never find it again!

Just listened to this set for my first time ever. Awesome. It may have changed my opinion of '83.

Now whats this business about this being the best dew ? Its very good, but come on. Jerry nearly killed Chuck Norris with his leads on 9-18-87... ;o)
dylanstubs 2009-04-04 18:42:12
Yes, this is the king of all Dews. An incredible unleashing of energy.
MrEmoto 2009-04-06 09:56:56
I was at this show. Brought two friends who had never seen the dead before. Just the parking lot scene before we even got inside blew their minds! LOL
jawknee 2009-04-09 22:33:25
Never mind the Dew, get the Scarlet Fire! Yow!
raucher 2009-04-19 13:43:58
