my heart is honestly torn. I was on the fence when the Dead decided to tour again. Why not, afterall it was only Jerry Garcia that died. Not like a major entity to the band or anything. Afterall, one man does not make a group, or a band, in this meaning. Mr Phillip Lesh was the backbone, and bring up all things that matter was Mr. Robert Weir & the time keeper Mr. William Kruitzman & his partner in crime, the rhythm devil himself, Mr. Mickey Hart. This unit alone could cause many a pulse to race. Just with their petitgre alone. And with their side projects they did just that. Infact, they seemed to bring to life a certain aspect of the Grateful Dead that had long vanished, or resurrected with Mr. Garcia's passing.
I last saw the Grateful Dead on new years of '91. I asked myself many times after that last performance, would the magic ever return. I got my answer. I was lucky enough to see The Dead perform in NYC at the Blender & at the Roseland. The feeling is definately still there but the meaning has changed. I saw the Allman's at the Beacon just prior, and thought if any one could do "it". Mr Warren Haynes could.
Here is where I pull at my heart strings. It is no longer an effort put forth of like minded musicians. Yes, all these men, every last one, believes in the music. But the heart is somewhere else, or just not there. It's not a one man band, which the Grateful Dead may have become before Jerry died.
The feeling is no longer there, mine & theirs. They lack the luster that was once theirs. They lack the love, that was just a given when Jerry was stage right.
It's a far gone lullabye, sung many years ago. |

Just finished listening.. I think the music rocks. So happy the guys are back at it. Also, I love Warren's playing in 2009 much more than Jerry's in 1995.
For those who wax poetic about 'the feeling being gone' and 'the heart is'nt there' etc. Huh? I mean, is'nt it just a great time with a great band? Is'nt that was it always was? I mean, would you rather Lesh/Weir etc sit at home listening to their arteries harden? Sorry, but I just can't see/feel anything negative about these men are doing. It's been 14 years since Jerry split Earth, dude. Time to move on. You can always listen to the old tapes anyway.
Of course it's all just opinion, but really, does'nt good music rule no matter who's playing it? I'm sure Jerry would agree, and he would want these guys to keep doing it. So why should'nt they?
Kudos! Keep playing guys!

Glad to see the guys back on the road doin' it!
Just heard the Worcester show on sat radio and other than some tech quirks, it was great. Yes Jerry's gone blah blah but this is a revitalized band playing their collective hearts out and taking some chances without just standing on "the hits" like so many bands of yore are these days. And as far as "stage left vs. stage right" designation jerryskid315, those descriptors are always from the audiences perspective so Jerry was Stage right during most of the band's performances and Phil stage left as seen from the audience. Thanks for this post taper/poster. |

| I just wanted to say it is nice to see the boys have fun again. I can't say I enjoy Warren more than Jerry even during his "red shirt" days in '95 but it is still nice to have fun. I will always enjoy those times of past but let's live in the present. i was only able to make DC but I am glad to have gone. |
